I don't know what happen, but my Digital western external harddrive dosn't work anymore? I can see the files but I can only copy the files from it and transfer to my mac. I cant read or write? What do I do?
View 6 RepliesI've read several threads where people have been having trouble with this, but nothing has been resolved so far? I've got a 2ghz core duo mac mini running OS 10.6.4. I used to be able to stream digital output from it, but I cant anymore & it's driving me around the bend. I have tried new cables, different combinations of sources of audio, cables, inputs on my AV receiver and everything is in good working order apart from the digital out on my mac.
It will play analogue stereo fine, it will play from the built-in speakers, but it will not play the optical digital stream. As I said before, it used to do this fine, until one day it just stopped working, it kind of 'faded out' and never came back. The light still shines when the toslink cable is plugged in and the output switches to digital in system prefs, but nothing is being received by the AV receiver.
I have an external hard drive I was using all morning. This afternoon, the hard drive isn't showing up on my desktop. It does show up in my system profiler under usb. When I go to disk utility to repair it, it isn't there.

I have a Toshiba 250GB external hard drive to back up pictures. I can write to it just fine. I also have a Fantom Drive 1TB external. I could write to it last week, but I turned it on this week and I can't write to it. I can still pull stuff off of it, but I can't write to it. What can be causing this? I have already installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. It doesn't make sense to me that I can't write to it all of the sudden.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI did do a search on this problem, but i started a new thread b/c I think i may be having a slightly different issue...please hear me out..I have a Macbook, running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11). I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem.However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems. I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file. And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MacBook Pro is fairly new, but I have a 500g Western Digital external hard drive that was originally hooked up to my previous computer, a PC. When I plugged in my external, I was able to move files from it to my Mac. However, I was unable to delete files off of the external while it was plugged into my Mac and I could not add files, either.
When I booted up my old PC and plugged the external into it, it worked fine. So I can only assume that since I first used it on my PC, I'm having trouble using it on my Mac. A friend of mine told me something about how I'd have to reformat my computer and start over. PLEASE tell me this is not the case. Does anybody know a way to fix this that lets me keep my Mac as is and not have to delete anything?

Today it has stopped working with my macbook pro and my works hp laptop, it will still light up and I can hear that it is turned on but it won't appear on the screen. I cannot find any trace of it on my macbook, I've tried the disk utility but it is not there. I tried a friends hp laptop and it is working fine on that.Â

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use a Toslink connection and iTunes to listen to music files through two different audio systems. After the latest OS update the digital optical connection has ceased to work. I've tried it with another computer running an older OS and it works fine, no issues on either audio system.Â
Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to resolve it? I've spent 2 days with Apple Senior Tech Support and it's still not working.

The sound output in my Macbook Pro has been going in and out now for a number of months. And yesterday it finally got stuck on "Digital Output" meaning when I take out headphones from the jack, the internal speakers do not work. I finally upgraded from my 15" PowerBook 1.67 to the new 13" MacBook Pro 2.66. On the PowerBook I would usually run an external display using a single link DVI cable. I have read about the issues with the apple mini display adapters not working on DVI-I or non fully digital displays, but since I had been running the external via single link DVI (digital correct?) I figured that I wouldn't run into any problems. I did some troubleshooting with what I had and plugged my computer into my TV through the mini display adapter to a single link DVI to HDMI cable and all worked fine. Do you think that a dual link DVI cable could solve the problem connecting to my monitor? Or is my monitor flat out incabable? Third party adapter? Worst case I could just go VGA, though I don't want to. My monitor is a Sceptre x20.

My external HD won't show up anymore on my desktop nor does it get listed in disc utilities. I tried to cennect it to another mac but it doesn't show there either nor in that mac's disc utility. I happened to re-start the computer while the hd was connected and now it doesn't show up anymore. I use it for back-up via Time machine. I could re-format and do the back up all over again but then I need to find it first.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI took 2 storage HDs out of my Mac Pro and stuck them in this external HD which I just bought.when I plug it in to my Macbook Pro and turn it on, nothing happens. It all lights up and the harddrives churn for a little bit, but nothing shows up on the desktop or in Disk Utility. What am I doing wrong? I have tried FW400, FW800, and USB2.0. I'm new to external enclosures, so tell me if there is some song and dance routine I need to perform to get it to show up.

It won't download them, and I can't delete them, either. It also won't recognize any new photos I've taken with the camera. iTunes LPs have stopped working for me for some reason. It's been like this for months and I haven't found a solution anywhere. When I click on the LP file, nothing happens. Nothing pops up, nada. It's like as if I hadn't clicked on it at all. This is affecting ALL my iTunes LPs. I checked the files in the iTunes media folder and they all seem to be there iTunes just won't open them. I have the latest version of iTunes and I'm using a 2010 iMac 27" running Mac OS X Lion, the latest version.

I have a Mac Mini, running OS X and for ages I have been using an external drive for transferring pictures and videos between friends and family and for backups of a few documents for work etc. I have never had any trouble using the drive and it has always worked OK.
The drive is an unknown brand, but for a few years it has worked with no problems.
I took the drive round to my girlfriends house to transfer some pictures and I lost my cable somewhere between my house and hers. The cable supplied with the drive was a USB 2.0, and went from USB A male one end to 2x USB A male on the other end. One of which I would use to transfer files over. The other just seemed useless and I never plugged it in to any USB port.
I replaced the cable with a single USB 2.0 cable and the drive powered up, all lights flashing, but nothing appeared on screen. I tried it on my housemates laptop, and my brothers laptop, both running Windows Vista. The laptops both installed drivers, and told me that everything was OK - good to go - but then nothing appeared on those either.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with the hard drive? I assume it is the type of cable that I have bought, as it was working fine before I lost the cable and replaced it with a single USB lead?
I recently bought an external hard drive (like 2 weeks ago)- I put two partitions on it, one set as a Time Machine backup (HFS+) and one as file storage (FAT32 to make compatible with Windows XP boot on my Macbook Pro). When I first got it, I remember being surprised by how quiet it was. I filled it up and now, whenever I plug the drive in, it makes a sound like it's constantly reading (reminds me of the sound old, old computers used to make when thinking a lot, i.e. with the blinking orange light).
As soon as I start 'using' it (for instance, turning Time Machine backup on, etc.) it suddenly starts running quiet again. I made sure to make it 'invisible' to Spotlight so it doesn't index the drive... what else could be accessing the drive and making it work so hard? The constant 'grinding' of the drive is really bothersome!
I have a Maxtor 3200 that I reformatted to OS X with the help of information on this board. I have been using it to save my music files and photos. It was working great but all of a sudden it will not let me save or transfer any files larger that a simple spreadsheet. Every time I try to save anything larger, it freezes up and usually crashes.I have plenty of space left on the disk. I have tested the drive using the disk utility and it has found no errors or problems. I've even changed the cable I am using.

I have shared my internet connection to my PC via ethernet many times (so my PC get the internet connection from a ethernet cable plugged into my MacBook which shares it's connection via AirPort).
Now suddenly it doesn't work, when I plug in the ethernet cable to my MacBook the internet connection dies whenever the ethernet connection starts working... I'm still connected to the wireless network, but can't use internet...
So the connection to internet dies whenever I try to share it to my PC from my Mac... Anybody know how to fix this?
