I recently bought a used MBA, I always want one when it first came out, finally wait until now because of the big price drop My first mod to my MBA is to upgrade the hard drive. I wasn't pay much attention when I purchase this replacement hard disk, didn't notice the MBA only takes 5mm height, as most 1.8" in the market are 8mm. But since it's in my hand right now, I decided to put it on see if the MBA recognizes it. Not too much surprise, leopard installation went very smoothly. After the installation, the available space is about 95gb. And because of the 5400rpm, it feels faster.
Too bad the bottom won't close because of the height of this drive. But at least this gives me an idea, and I know there's a Toshiba 1.8" 120gb 4200rpm 5mm out there, and it should fits perfectly in MBA. Anyway, I'm still debating myself rather getting this Toshiba drive or a Samsung 32gb SSD(Same drive as used in the Rev.A SSD version, but different capacity) As the price of these two drives are pretty much the same (around $150 range) I have another computer for my main work, so I'm toward getting a 32gb SSD

I am trying to sell my Rev. A MBA to get a Rev. C 2.13GHz 128GB SSD. Looking to read comments from people who did the same. Can Rev. C finally play a movie without skipping frames? Can it run 4-5 apps without the fans kicking up to 6,000 rpm? Also the iSight on the Rev. A is a POS. Have they upgraded it to a better one?

Added latest scores for Firmware 1199. Check out the xbench scores Woo hoo ! Just got my Vertex 120GB yesterday. Inside is a plain black box. Looks like OCZ is learning from Apple. Kinda reminds me of the iPhone packaging. The drive itself: This replaces the current WD Scorpio Blue 320GB in my Macbook 2.0 GHz Installing the Vertex couldn't be easier, but one has to use the 4 Torx screws so that the drive fits into the bay And that's what it looks like ... fitting snugly inside. I think I like the sleek black Anyways, enough of pics. Onto install notes, benchmarks and impressions. I partitioned the drive in Apple's DiskUtility. And installed OS X 10.5.5 and then updated with the 10.5.6 combo update. I then installed Office 2008 and VMWare Fusion. If you are concerned with alignment, don't be ... at least under OS X. That is because Apple's utilities do alignment on 4K (4096) byte boundaries. It's not perfect but it is better than nothing. If you figure out how to do the alignment yourself and still keep the GUID partition table with the protective MBR and 200MB EFI partition - please post it so that we can experiment with it. In the meantime let's look at the partition table. Running " sudo fdisk /dev/rdisk0 " in Terminal gives us the following output:...............

I have a Runcore 64GB LIF SSD in my Air. Apparently it's still running 1571 version of firmware. I would like to upgrade that to the latest 1916. Couple of questions:
1. Which firmware executable do I use for this particular drive?
2. Is it safe to flash 1571 straight to 1916? I heard some users had problems if one doesn't flash to an interim version first
3. Is there a write up how to do this flash on Mac anywhere? I found one for Rev A but not 100% sure it's exactly the same as Rev B/C since controllers are different

from work, I can select either a Kingston 64GB SSDNow drive or an external HDD with similar value. Currently, I use 7200rpm in two unibody MBPs and I have a pair or eMacs with their original drives. Here are my options:
1. SSD in 13" MBP with Windows running on Parallels. I worry that by allocating half of the storage for both OS, I wouldn't have enough space for anything in terms of working with files. Removing the optical drive is not an option here. Also, I need to switch off a few options in Windows, like the disc fragmentation and so on. What are they? Can TRIM support under Parallels be taken advantage of? I'm still not sure about using SSDs. I don't mind waiting for applications to launch or to boot up.
2. SSD in external HDD enclosure with USB, so I can boot from it on both MBPs. In this scenario, it would only run Snow Leopard. But wouldn't a USB2 port impose a bottleneck, almost defeating the point of using an SSD?....................

On ifixit pages seems that the samsung hs12yha (120gb) could be put inside a mba first gen. I had asked ifixit support confirmation, and they told me it will work, but from the specs page the block size il 4k and not 512.. (the reason why the 5th gen ipod hd does not work in the air).

I have a Rev A MBA with the 64GB SSD, and am just wondering why it shows the capacity as ~60GB under Snow Leopard, when I'd thought it was supposed to show the capacity as it is marketed as, i.e. as 64GB? I read somewhere that there is also some capacity taken up by partitioning, but doesn't 4GB taken up by partitioning seem like a lot? I just thought I should ask since I don't really understand... I found another thread but then it seemed like the person only lost 1GB due to partitioning, and that was on a 1TB drive, meaning they were loosing far less of the drive's capacity as a % than I seem to be. Finder shows the capacity of my SSD as 59.68GB, System Profiler as 60.02 GB (60,022,480,896 bytes), and Disk Utility as 60.02GB. Just to make it clear I understand all the base 10 vs. base 2 stuff, it's just that under base 10 in 10.6 I don't understand why my SSD doesn't show up as 64GB.

Can anyone suggest which SSD to choose :-
OCZ Vertex 2 50GB vs Corsair Performance 64GB ?
Right now I can get both for the same price.
I know the Corsair has the 128MB cache but could not dig up the cache for the OCZ.

Can I park a 64GB SDEC in the Pro-Retina's SDEC slot, such as a Lexar or Sandisk, and use it as a slow drive? Will it show up like a thumb drive in a USB port? There are no Flash USB 3 thumbdrives on the Apple Store site that I can find. Will over-the-counter USB 3 thumbs from stores work? Or do they have to say Mac compatible?Â

My 2008 mini has slowed down to a crawl so im thinking of installing a 120gb ssd into it and installing snow leopard (ive already maxed out the ram). My mini came with tiger with an update to leopard. If I want to install snow leopard do i need to install tiger, then upgrade to leopard and then snow leopard, or can i just install snow leopard immediately. I will be purchasing the 120gb ssd from OWC as well as snow leopard this week, so appreciate any help.

I have an early 2009 Mac mini and the 120GB hard drive is starting to get a little cramped. Especially since I'm now keen to get Windows installed on there as well. So I was hoping to upgrade myself. I've already opened the mini and added memory so I'm confident enough with that. I just need to know what I need to be aware of when upgrading. For example, will ant 2.5" SATA disk do the trick? I was thinking of this one:[URL:...]

i had a backup disk image that was 120gb stored on an SDHC card. i was able to open the disk image yesterday, but when i tried to open today, i got an error message saying it was not a mountable disk image. when i looked at the disk image in the finder directory, it showed the file was only 134k. how could that happen?Â
I can't figure out if it is the SD card or a corrupted disk image. Not sure how to go about recovering my data.Â

So, like a complete idiot i downloaded a torrent file with a few thousand font files. i installed them all and it has bogged down my OS and taken over programs like Safari, firefox and entourage (which i use for email). when i change the font in the preference menu in the respective program it will change the size but not the actual font style. another strange thing is that safari will not load pictures now either.
i want to just wipe the hdd but i do not have a disc because i bought it used. i can take it back to the guy i got it from as he refurbishes macs but i was wondering if i could avoid the trip if any one has a tip or two for me.

I just ordered a new Macbook Pro (with Retina Display). It's my first MBP since 2007.I'm super excited about it, minus one glaring issue. My harddrive is the baseline 251 GB SSD. I've hardly used the thing besides loading some music and movies onto it. However, when I look at the'About this Mac' window, it says I'm using 51.89GB in Other.Compared to only 11GB in Movies and 2GB in Audio. It's hard for me to believe that the operating system takes up a whopping 50GB..How can I account for this Other section?
