Sep 30, 2009I've sold my old Macbook pro and bought a shiny new one. I want to take a clone of the disk on my old one in case there's anything I've forgotten to copy over.

OS X :: Option To Clone Install Disk, Don't Need To Clone?
Aug 30, 2010I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

Jun 28, 2014Decided to encrypt my external backup drive. Instead, I essentially doubled my memory by duplicating my external hard drive and adding it to my MacBook. Now my startup disk is full and I'm stuck. I also have Time Machine but not sure how to restore (replace?) my Mac storage to what it was two hours ago.

Sep 15, 2009Can anyone explain to me why when I burn a full length film on dvd from my PC using DVD Clone, I can rip the dvd and burn it from the hard drive without compressing. A very simple process. But on the mac the dvd has to be ripped with MTR, or similar, then compressed, then burned using Toast or Popcorn or something similar. Why are these added steps not necessary on a PC. I don't understand.

However, if I'd like the Clone backup to be bootable, does it need to reside in it's own partition or can I simply plop it onto the HDD alongside the Time Machine backup on the same partition. Oct 8, 2009I am planning to buy a 500GB laptop harddrive, put it in an enclosure, and use CarbonCopyCloner to make a bootable clone of my Mac's internal 500GB Drive. This way, if there is a problem with my internal drive, I can just swap in the cloned drive and boot from that, never missing a step. However, I am wondering if this is a good strategy. What if something else fails on my mac like the motherboard - would I be able to boot my cloned drive on another mac?

Mar 25, 2012I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

Apr 16, 2012My original hdd refuses to boot up, and using disk utility via recovery mode to try and fix it just gives me an error "disk utility stopped repairing the drive, salvage data and format etc." giving an error about invalid node structure or something. Tried using target disk mode with a friend's mac when I was at work but the drive didn't even want to mount. Assuming it's about to die, I have just bought a new hdd (XT Hybrid) and since my mac is pre-Lion era (2010 model) I don't have a built in recovery mode, but strangely enough hooking up my old hdd with a dock and option-booting to it I can still access the recovery HD partition on it.
So I was thinking if i can essentially "clone" my original hdd to the new one using the restore tab on disk utility, and try using disk repair on it to get it working? or is there another app I can use that will do this (being mindful that I don't have access to another mac or the OS on the HDD to run it, so it'll have to be "live", and preferably free) Or should I just cut my losses and just put a fresh install on it... Yes I do have a time machine backup, but there's two reasons I want to see if this works - one is that although time machine is quite up to date (within a week I'm guessing, can't remember), it's obviously won't have the new content created during the day(s) before I was able to plug in my external hdd, and secondly since I don't have access to another mac to create a lion install usb drive, I'll have to use the internet recovery, and knowing my internet connection, 4gb download would take probably overnight and nearly a whole day to finish (assuming it doesn't drop out).

Aug 22, 2014Tried to create a bootable clone using Disk Utility & got this:“Restore Failure, Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps.”I may need to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner ($40) or Super Duper ($28).I had been using my free CCC v. 3.4.7 to make clones of OS X 10.6.8 but now I upgraded to OS X 10.9.4 & got message that CCC not compatible with Mavericks unless I buy the CCC v. 3.5.6.I read several places that DU can do back up clones same as CCC or SD!I launched DU from recovery system, selected Mac HD as source & my XHD as destination. Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong?Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

May 1, 2008I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.
So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.
It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.
However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.
More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.
Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):
Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?
Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?
I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?

Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup.The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

Feb 10, 2012my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.
Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

Do I have to reinstall all the apps from scratch? Is there a backup program other than Time Machine? Should I be using dd?
