Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7

MACBOOK PRO, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.
So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.
It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.
However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.
More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.
Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):
Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?
Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?
I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?
I have a external HD which has always worked fine under snow leopard. Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup. The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.Â
Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

I just bought MacBook Air yesterday (the 80GB version), and love it! It makes a nice companion to my MacBook Pro. I have now one problem. How do I get my Time Machine backup from my Firewire disk to the MacBook since MBA does not have a Firewire port?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have this issue in both macs I own, a 2010 MBP, and a 2012 Mac mini. After I upgraded to yosemite, Time Machine will not find my backup disk. I have been using the same network attached storage drive for 4 years for time machine backups. I has worked fine with all the macs I've owned until now. I can see the disk in Finder, I can go to disk utility and mount the Time Machine disk, but when I go to Time Machine preferences and try to select the list, the disk is not listed there, even though is mounted.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I bought a brand new WD 1TB Elements (USB) to use with Time Machine. I've never used a Time Machine before. I have a MBP13 with a 250GB disk, using the latest Snow Leopard, all updates installed. Formatted the drive to Mac OS Journaled (extended) and set it to use with Time Machine. Works until about 15-17GBs is copied over, than it fails:
1. If I start over it fails very soon after, no matter how many times I retry
2. No matter how many times I reformat it, it always fails
3. I tried one trick I googled - deleting the "inprogress" file - does NOT help
4. SMART status is verified
5. There are no problems if I verify/repair the disk.
I want to use Time Machine, but I don't want to have all my data sitting in the open on an external drive that someone can just carry away. Can I make an encrypted disk image, and have Time Machine use that as the backup volume?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got a message that my Time Machine external backup disk is full. I have another external drive I can use, but buying drives every few months is going to get expensive.
I was wondering what others are doing in this situation.
Is anybody archiving the Time Machine backup? If so, what software are you using and where are you storing your backup?
What kind of backup plans are you using with Time Machine?
I'm no newbie but this one has me stumped. I can put file onto a Time machine backup disk that I don't use as a backup anymore but I can't take them off. The Disk still has some backups on it that I would like to keep. But I would like to use the extra space for regular file storage. What gives. When putting a file on the disk it asks for the password but moving them to the trash it will delete everything in the folder but it won't actually delete the root folder. So my question is
1. Can I use the disk and keep the backups on it?
2. How do I get permission to read and write to the disk
I have the new Time Capsule and am able to access it remotely just fine. However, because I'm stuck at school all day, I rarely get the chance to back up my Macbook Pro. Does anyone know of a way to have Time Machine backup to a remote disk, such as my Time Capsule? (I'm a Mobile Me subscriber, by the way)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had to give up my Macbook Pro and am now going back to my Macbook. I have everything loaded on a Time Machine backup, but am having trouble getting to my Macbook. I bought a Leopard Install DVD back when they were released, but when I pulled it out I saw it is now scratched. Can I use a Macbook Pro Leopard install disk to restore my Time Machine backup to a Macbook? If not, is there any way to completely restore a computer from a Time Machine backup without an install disk?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that full Os backup should be about 155 GB, but it tries to backup whole disk 1 TB. It works fine for first full backup 155 GB (I have exclude list) after that it wants to backup whole disk no matter what. No such problem with 10.6.2 just with 10.6.3. Image so we are clear. I'm new to Mac OS X.

I need to deploy multi iMac for my company with exact same setup.I am able to do this with the Time Machine without problem. But I would like to know is there a way to backup the "Time Machine" USB HDD I have created, just incase my USB HDD is corrupted or I need to distribut the Time Machines to other office for deployment? Can I create a dmg file with my existing Time Machine USB HDD. so that I can make multi copy of USB HDD with the same dmg by restoring the dmg?

Trying to partition by back up disk in order to copy hard drive on my iMac using time machine. I have my lap top already on the external disk and just need to partition. Did not accept the first and second try.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEach time im doing a time machine backup, the external drive does not eject, the icon becomes pale, but remains on the desktop. But when I did not just make a backup I can eject it normaly.
My disc contains two partitions, one with the backups. When my problem occurs the first partition is ejected but not the Time Machine one.
I tried to reformat the partition but the problem persists. My hard drive is a GDrive mobile usb 1 TO purchased at the apple store.

I have port forwarded port 46 (TCP and UDP) to port 548 a Mac mini server running Mac OS X 10.6.8, and I have Time Machine backup disk on it set as a share point with Time Machine support enabled. On my Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.5, I am able to connect via AFP to my server with the address "afp://my-ip-address:46" and can read and write on the backup disk share point. I tested that, and it works. When I am on the same LAN as the server, I can use that disk for Time Machine and have been doing so for years. However, I cannot do a Time Machine backup to that share point over the WAN. When I open Time Machine preferences, I can select the share point as my backup disk, but once I start the backup, it says "Backup disk not available" and fails to start.
In case you're wondering, I forward port 46 to port 548 instead of port 548 to port 548 to minimize hacking attempts. Last time I used a default port, a computer in Taiwan started spamming SSH authentication failures.
I currently back up onto a 250gb external hard drive using Time Machine. This is now full, so today I purchased a new 1TB drive. I would like to keep all my backups in one place, so would it be possible to copy all my past Time machine backup data/files to my new disk and then start backing up to this in the future. How to do I get Time Machine to see that I have swapped disks when I come to restore files? Will doing this confuse Time Machine?
View 3 Replies View RelatedUpdate: "Magically," the backup is working over AirPort Disk. I'll chalk it up to a Snow Leopard ghost. I have been backing up to a WD My Book 1TB drive connected to my Airport Extreme router without any problems. Yesterday I upgraded to 10.6 (installed over 10.5.8, not a clean install) and have been having problems with Time Machine since. After the OS finished installing, I attempted to perform a wireless backup. Everything mounted properly, and it began a 10GB backup. When it got to around 5.8GB, Time Machine came up with a network error message (not sure which one exactly) and stopped the backup.
At this point I just connected the drive directly to my computer to perform the backup, and it did so without any hiccups. But now I can't even connect to the AirPort disk, let alone try to backup to it. Time Machine says it's not configured, and when I try to browse for my Time Machine Backup Disk it won't let me select it, even though the drive shows up in AirPort Utility. I've enclosed a screenshot of what I'm seeing. Does anyone have any tips to help me get this mounted and working again? This is not turning out to be as painfree an update as advertised.
I have a 500GB HD in my mini. I have a 2TB drive with about 1TB of files on it. Can I use some of the free space for backup and still use the rest for files?

I just did and automatic update that consisted of about 6 items, now my external hard drive is not even recognized! Long story short, Time Machine can not find my external to do a backup. I have already done all the unplugging and restarting and searching for the disk... Nothing! my external is Lit and seemingly functioning.Â

For sharing my iPhoto Library among multiple users on a MacBook Pro running, currently 10.6.8, I have by a Apple Support guide created a disk image file, and mounted it for storing my pictures without permission issues. However, to account for future expansion, the disk image is made to be 100 GB, while current photo library size is approx 50 GB. Is there any way of getting Time Machine to backup the files within the mounted disk, rather than backing up the disk image file itself? So that the size of the backup at present would be the actual size of contents of the disk, rather than the whole disk image file itself? And furthermore, by copying a disk image file, will the actual files within also be backuped?

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back
I am using an external hard drive that is connected via USB 2.0 to my Airport Extreme to back up using Time Machine. In order to get Time Machine to recognize the hard drive in question, however, I had to mount it as a drive on the network. Can I put a password on the hard drive that is separate from my network's password? What I want is a situation in which people can get onto my network using a password but CANNOT access the Time Machine backup hard drive.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive used by Time Machine. Worked perfectly for a few months. Now every day, I get a message that a backup failed because the disk appears to be read only. I launch Disk Utility, and run Verify Disk It finds nothing wrong. I ask Time Machine to back up again, and it does and continues hourly for the rest of the day. The next day, the same thing happens all over again with the read only problem.
