MacBook :: Audio Port Broken - Looking For USB Sound Options

Jan 6, 2011

I've got the old Macbook model, circa 2006. My audio port's been broken for awhile now, and I recently got a 5.1 surround sound system. I've been playing music through my iPod, of course not getting the full surround effect, but would love to be able to hook the Macbook up to this system, be it in full surround or not. I've got the runaround from people at Radioshack, Best Buy, and was even led to buy this silly part which has done me no good: [URL]. Is there any way I can hook up my speaker system to the laptop via USB?

MacBook Pro :: No Sound Input From Audio Line-in Port (mic)?

Jun 29, 2012

I'm trying to plug in and use an external microphone to record a screen capture. Sound gets through the headphones great but, looking at Input Sound in the Sys Pref, the Line In device does not pick up any sound when I speak into the mic. If I switch it back to the Built-In Internal Microphone device it picks up my voice fine. In the Audio MIDI Setup, the Built-in Input device is selected as the device to be used for sound input. There is a switch on my headset to mute or unmute the mic and I've tried it in both positions. There is a volume dial on my headset (presumably for the headphones) and I've fiddled with that too. I've moved the Input volume for the Line In Audio Line-in port device all the way up and still it hasn't picked up a thing. I have a Mac os x Lion on a Macbook Pro and using a 3.5 mm mini-jack headset with two cables, one for the headphones and one for the microphone.

Mac Pro :: Audio Options To Hear Great Sound

Feb 24, 2009

I purchased a Mac Pro last Thursday after running a G4 350 MHZ machine for far too many years. But it had been such a good machine I focused on it and took my eyes off of technological progress. I thought the PCI buses in the Mac pro were just faster versions of the kind of PCI in the G4. The G4 was outfitted with a Revolution 7.1 sound card from M Audio and that fed into a Creative 6.1 speaker system (with internal amp). The sound was amazing. It was my hope that I'd be able to transfer this card to the Mac Pro and discover even higher quality sound. But before I even tried plugging it in I did some checking and found that PCI Express is an entirely different technology than PCI.

M-Audio has stopped making the Revolution even though they still have drivers for OS X 10.5 (for folks who put this OS onto machines with the original PCI slots, I suppose). So now that this dream has shattered I am wondering what are my options for being able to hear great sound from my new computer. The internal speaker is OK for the beeps and buzzes produced by an OS that wants to get your attention but it sounds horrible when you're trying to watch a surround sound DVD. I'd like to hear from any Mac Pro owners who have found a way to make their computers deliver high quality sound. I know the Mac Pro has optical in and out but have no idea how I could make use of this other than to plug into a rather high priced surround amp.

MacBook Pro :: Sound Output Device Stuck On Headphones - Other Sound Related Options ?

Dec 13, 2009

This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.

MacBook Pro :: Ethernet Port Broken - Safari / Chrome Not Working?

Sep 4, 2010

I just got to college and discovered that wifi didnt work (now I've learned that it only works with Firefox for whatever reason) so I just plugged into the ethernet port at my desk and it worked for a week or so and then it wouldn't work and I checked Network settings and it couldn't detect an ethernet cable. So I reset the PRAM and it worked... for a few hours, and now it doesn't. I don't want to have to do that every time I come back to my desk. What should I do about this? (and any suggestions on safari/chrome not working? I posted it in another subforum on here but I got nowhere)

MacBook :: BootCamp Update Has Broken Audio?

Jan 7, 2010

I have a white Macbook bought in July 2009 with Windows XP installed with BootCamp. A few days ago, the Apple Software Updater downloaded an update for BootCamp which apparently included updated audio drivers. Unfortunately, there is now no audio coming out of the speakers or earphones whether the sound is muted or not (in either Realtek or Windows sound managers). The sound works fine in OS X. Is anyone else having this problem since the update or is there something obvious which I'm missing?

MacBook Pro :: 13" Line In/out Audio Port Vs Dedicated Audio Ports On 15"?

Apr 18, 2010

when you're recording, will the sound quality of the dual function line in audio port on the 13" be as good as the dedicated one on the 15"?

edit: the reason I'm wondering is because I want to convert old collections of vinyl records into digital copies at the highest quality possible and need to know if the 'line in' on the 13" will work good for that.

MacBook :: Headphone Tip Broken And Stuck Inside Audio Plug?

Jul 29, 2010

The tip of my headphones broke while connected to the macbook, my computer has this tip inside the audio plug and plays sounds on the useless lineout. There is no way to remove that thing (I tried everything, including matches with a bit of superglue). The only solution I see to get the sound back to the internal speakers is to disable the lineout.

Mac :: MacBook And FireWire Audio Options?

Jun 14, 2007

I've been having a lot of problems with heat in relation to my firewire audio interface on my MacBook.Initially I thought it was my external monitor that was the main problem. Well, it does add some heat. The temperature raises about 5-6 degrees celcius and the fan speeds up to 2400rpm when idling. This I can live with. However, when connecting my firewire audio interface the heat and fan speed becomes unacceptable. The heat raises about 10 degrees, and the fan speeds up to about 5500rpm. After about half an hour of regular use, like browsing, the temperature goes up even more (as expected) and the fan starts blowing at full speed. And this by just browsing the web.

MacBook Air :: No Audio Over MiniDisplay Port / HDMI?

Oct 21, 2010

Ever since the latest generation of MacBook/ Macbook Pro you can now send audio over the MiniDisplay Port output. The tech specs on Apples web site say no word about it. Any early adopters out that that can prove me wrong? 2 Cables (power, MiniDisplay Port to HDMI) is much better than 3 (power, headphone jack, DVI to HDMI in current Old MacBook Pro Setup). With the nice Graphics card the MacBook Air works great as a portable Media player, I just hope it has this feature.

MacBook :: Getting No Response From Audio Line In Port

I very confused about my line in port. I'm trying to hook my macbook up to my 4 channel PA using a 1/8" input jack, I am using garageband, but I get no response. the driver is switched to built in line in port but still nothing. I find that when I unplug it a little bit, the computer picks up the sound but there is a strange fuzz sound that accompanies it. So basically, the input does not work when I plug it in all the way. I know it worked before, perhaps I blew the input?

MacBook Pro :: FireWire Port Not Able To Work With Audio Interface

Dec 28, 2010

I'm wondering if I somehow have a bad firewire chip in my MBP. It hasn't been able to work with firewire audio interfaces.

- I tried a Metric Halo ULN 2 which loses sync with it's audio. It will be fine for a few minutes with itunes but then becomes distorted and ringy as if it's lost it's audio sync.
- Random kernel panics while using Logic 9, Garageband 11 with an Apogee Duet - all software fully updated. One time it froze while not doing anything - logic was simply open and sitting there. Using iTunes through the Duet seems fine.
- Pops and crackles using Presonus Firestudio.

I've tried wiping my software and reinstalling everything. I'm using a MBP 5,3 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, Snow Leopard (10.6.5) with the latest updates. I'm going to try an Apogee One which is USB, but I'd really like to use a firewire interface. If there's something wrong with my firewire port, I'd like it taken care of. My machine is under applecare 3 year warranty. I don't think this is an easy thing to prove though.

Now that Apple has released Macs capable of putting out audio over HDMI (via Mini-Displayport) I was wondering if there is a hack to do this on older MacBooks. Certainly this is software based.

I remember a little pref pane that allowed two-finger scrolling on iBooks--hoping the same type of thing exists for audio over HDMI.

MacBook Pro :: Sound Options With MBP When Connected To 27" ACD?

Oct 8, 2010

I have a late '08 MBP that I'm connecting to a brand new 27" ACD (which is unbelievable by the way), and everything works great for a while. After sleeping and waking a few times, there's a massive 4-5 second lag all of a sudden only when the volume is adjusted (bluetooth Apple keyboard), and the sound is gone no matter what level the volume is set to. The sound is set to run by default on the ACD's internal speakers. Everything else on the keyboard functions fine. It's just the volume that's affected. There's no way to correct it unless I unplug all three cable connections (USB, MDP, Power) and plug them back in. If I just disconnect one (I've tried all three individually), it doesn't fix anything. Lastly, I got the updated Apple software for the monitor before I even got it home (so unless they've put out an update in the last two weeks, then I have the latest software).

MacBook Pro :: No Sound From Mini Display Port?

Recently I have noticed that I cannot get any sound from my mini display port when conencted to a TV. It did used to work. I get a perfect picture everytime but no sound. I've tested the mini-display port to HDMI cable on another mac and it works fine. I've bought another Moshi mini display port to HDMI connector and that also does not work. I tried this on 3 TV's and its all the same, picture but no sound.  The HDMI option does not appear under system prefs, sound & output. The only options are internal speakers and soundflower 2ch & 16ch. I've tried uninstalling airfoil and still the same. I can't recall when it stopped working. I did attempt to install OS Lion but it crashed my mail so I restored to 10.6 through time machine.

Software :: Sound And Speakers Options In Original Macbook Pro?

Jul 27, 2009

For some reason, the sound is going in and out on my computer. The left speaker is making an odd noise (a clicking/snapping noise) and whenever I try playing a sound it is playing the sound broken up. The output volume under sound when I go to the system preferences keeps saying the output is at a certain level, but then it says "the selected device has no output controls". It switches between the two every few seconds. It can't be strictly a problem with the speakers because when I plug my headphones in it does the same thing. Is something internally wrong with my computer? Do I need to bring it into a store to get fixed? I have the original Macbook Pro. The computer is over three years old
