MacBook :: Applecare Running Out On Unreliable 2.1

Jan 28, 2010

I bought my Macbook Mid-2007, so it's the one with the Intel GMA945. Since purchase this Macbook has been nothing but trouble, in both hardware and software departments (at one point clicking the bluetooth icon would cause a kernel panic...). Luckily I bought Applecare. The full list of problems that were serviced by my Apple Service Center are as below.

- Cracking all along the oustide of the keyboard, but that's common.
- On my second hard drive, the first died within a few months of purchase.
- Second Superdrive, the first motor died and wouldn't eject discs, nor would it burn dual layer dvd's.
- Motherboard died after a year of use, only time the motherboard was replaced just because of a motherboard problem.
- Motherboard replaced again after the sound card crapped out.
- Motherboard replaced AGAIN after ethernet jack failed.
- Going on my third fan now, hopefully the fan I ordered will arrive tomorrow, the thing sounds like it's tearing apart my poor Macbook. I listen to metal music, and even on max volume the fan is clearly audible. Skype conversations for the other person using the Mac inbuilt microphone are basically unbearable.

With this plethora of problems, would this warrant a replacement by Apple before my Applecare runs out this August? The only problem is I live in China, so I only get 'licensed Apple Service Centers', not an official one. I do travel back to the States often, BUT I'm not sure how well documented these problems were by the Chinese centers.

MacBook Pro :: Applecare - Computer Running Warm

Mar 4, 2010

I just thought i'd share my applecare story. I have a 2.2 ghz SR macbookpro. the headphone jack was acting a little static and i thought that the computer was running warm. So i sent it to apple with my installed seagate 500gb 7200rpm drive. Apple called me and told me they couldn't fix it with my drive in it because it wasn't under their warranty. But, they would put a free 160gb drive in instead and mail my 500gb back. They also did some additional work.

So the first time i sent it in they replaced:
Logic Board and graphics processor
Left in/out board
flex cable
hard drive
flex cable (a diff one)
left fan
right fan.............

OS X :: Why Flash So Unreliable

Nov 12, 2010

It seems to come and go with the wind. I've loaded, reloaded, clean loaded, tried everything to get it to work right. For awhile, embedded videos would redirect me to YouTube. Now that Apple has scrubbed Flash clean of insecurities, I can't get it to run at all. I have 10.6.5 on a Macbook Pro.

Mac Pro :: Bluetooth Connection Unreliable In OS X

Oct 26, 2009

I have a 2009 MP and I hate the unreliability of bluetooth in OS X. I constantly get drops of my BT keyboard and/or mouse. The funny thing is they work well in the Windows 7 Boot Camp. 2 there may be 2 culprits: 1) Logitech MX 5500, which is not officially supported on Macs 2) Steermouse. What have other people's experience been?

OS X :: Returning To Leopard Due To Unreliable Performance Of SL

Sep 1, 2009

It's with some trepidation that I've decided to return to Leopard. For all its great points, Snow Leopard is just too buggy right now for day-to-day use. Even after a clean install (several clean installs, actually) the Finder is still laggy, mouse performance is unreliable when FW800 drives are connected, setting '.mov' files to open with QuickTime Player 7 results in all their icons breaking - I could go on, but these few flaws are enough to disrupt me from my video editing work.

I'm sure the creases will be ironed out in time, but I can't live with an OS (no matter how technically refined) that doesn't behave correctly under the most BASIC circumstances. In fact, I can't think of a single thing I'll miss about SL, apart from maybe the new wallpapers and the fact that Mail now auto sets up MobileMe accounts correctly.

Hardware :: Unreliable Internet Access With AirPort Extreme

Dec 10, 2010

I have an older cable modem running Comcast's service connected to the newest AirPort Extreme in my current setup. My computer is a 13.3" MacBook Pro with all of the latest software updates. With all of that said, I'm having problems with having webpages hang, dropped audio on streams and constant re-buffering of video. Strangely enough, my signal is always at full strength no matter how far away I am from the AirPort. Until a few days ago I was using a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware with absolutely no troubles at all, but things have gone to hell with this new router. I've rebooted my modem and AirPort and I've browsed through the settings without finding any solutions yet. I've tried 5Ghz mode, I've tried being inches away from the AirPort and I've tried going to 802.11g with no improvements. Does anyone have an idea about what is going on?

Windows On Mac :: WiFi Extremely Unreliable Under Vista Business

Jun 9, 2009

Machine is a 15" MacBook Pro, Early 2008 (last of the non-glossy variety). Router is latest Dual Band Apple Airport Extreme. Device manager lists the driver version as 4.170.25.12 and Service description is BCM43XX. Driver comes from a fresh install of Boot Camp drivers. The wireless card works just fine - very well, actually - on the Mac side, but the moment I switch to Vista, I lose any ability to connect at N speeds and get a maximum connection of 36 mbps, and usually closer to 11 or 14. Do newer drivers exist? I've been googling for quite some time and I can't find anything that seems to work on the mac.

MacBook Pro :: Already Has Applecare?

Sep 30, 2009

apple replaced my SR mbp with a new unibody model after a series of breaks (which was awesome). Anyway, they told us to buy applecare, and since we were getting a brand new laptop we kind of had to say yes, so we bought it. Then when I got home and actually tried to apply it, it said it already had applecare. So I looked up the serial and it's covered until sep 2012, 3 years. So did I just get free applecare or did it just automatically apply because they were on the same receipt?

MacBook Air :: Finding Alternative For MBA Applecare?

Oct 28, 2010

this will be my first mac - and i need some advice on applecare

my friend has kindly bought a MBA from hong kong on my behalf and i'll get it later this week (can't wait!). what i need to decide is if i should purchase some sort of 'insurance cover' for this MBA.

applecare is the obvious choice. however, 199 for the 2 additional years seem quite pricey. although i have links with my university, i believe i won't be able to get the educational price (47) given the MBA was purchased from the HK online store.

do you think the 199 applecare will be important or are there 3rd party insurance covers out there i can consider?

MacBook Air :: Why Applecare If They Don't Cover Battery

Apr 5, 2009

I have had multiple Apple laptops in the past and never gotten (nor seen the need for) AppleCare. Both Pismo, CS1400 and MBP first gen. My experience is that any weak point will show up during the first year and I have sent in at least one to Apple and they have fixed it under original warranty during first year, no problem.
Since battery seems to be the weak link I was planning on getting AppleCare for my new MBA. However if that is not the covered by AppleCare then I am looking for some pointers/reason why I should even consider AppleCare for my MBA.

Solution: Logicboard replaced under applecare, problem fixed. For about a month.Decided not to use the brand new bluetooth mouse/keyboard I bought for another 4-5 months due to bluetooth issues

MacBook Pro :: Applecare Day Before Warranty Expires?

Jun 5, 2012

So I just bought the extended warranty for applecare for my MBP 13" 1 day before my warranty expires. (I checked my warranty status and it still says I'm covered.) However, I expected it to give me a number right away, but there's none--apparently they mail it. Kinda dumb, but okay. It won't arrive until after the warranty expires. Now, my question is: Can I activate the extended warranty when it arrives or will I be out of luck? I know that they say that you can purchase the warranty within 1 year of purchasing your hardware. However, I want to be absolutely sure, or else I'll be out a couple hundred dollars and have nothing to show for it.
