MacBook :: Switched HD's And Restored From Time Machine Backup - Apps Broken

Sep 18, 2010

As the title said, I've upgraded my HD and restored my system from a Time Machine backup, but now I'm having trouble with some apps either failing to open (when I click them, I get message saying "[app name] quit unexpectedly"), or some apps opening but then coming up with the same error when I try and click anything - these apps also drive the CPU usage right up while they're running.

Software :: Screen Goes Black When IBook Switched On

Apr 25, 2008

I have an apple iBook that I bought in 2001 (yeah, its old but then Mac's are suppose to be immortal!). Lately, I have started to have a particular problem as in the screen goes black when I switch on the machine. It's not completely blank as I can see the back ground but not enough to use the computer. I have to manually adjust the screen by getting is back and forth close to the keyboard till I see the screen brightly. When I let go the screen it again turns black.

More recently even this has stopped working and when I wake my my computer first thing in the morning it refuses to show a bright screen. And I have to wait for a couple of hours for the machine to warm up and then after fiddling with the screen it finally allows me to watch a normal looking bright monitor. I am quite fed up. Am planning to show it to an Apple authorized service provider.

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Won't Back Up And Files Won't Open When Double Clicked

Dec 11, 2014

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.

Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.

Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.

I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files.  I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic Grey Screen?

Aug 28, 2014

i have a Macbook running mountain lion, which froze today on safari.  I had to force close then when I restarted, it stuck on the grey screen with apple logo and pinwheel.  I tried rebooting in safe mode, which eventually came up with the following

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x004384FF): "unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI".
"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.12.14/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp: 1407

and a lot of other stuff under that.  I understand this is a kernel panic?

i've tried a disk repair which came back as 'disk utility can't repair this disk etc'

is there any hope I will be able to connect via Ethernet to another mac and get to my hard drive or is all hope lost?

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic - Way To Transferred Old Files With Time Machine?

Nov 28, 2009

I just received a replacement computer for a defective machine. Its a brand new macbook pro. I transferred old files with time machine only to have the new machine resume a series of kernel panics that caused the replacement. The Genius Bar asked me to reload everything from scratch so as not to transfer corrupt files. I did so -- with the most up to date dmg files out there, and 4 days later had another kernel panic. I do not know what it means but have pasted it below.

MacBook Air :: Gray Apple Screen - Looks Like DOS / Panic / Kernel

Jun 4, 2014

I am stuck with DOS-looking commands on the gray apple startup screen. Part of the commands are listed below. I can't do anything. I'm not even sure I've been able to reboot, although I've tried holding the power button, holding S+Cmd+power, and holding ctrl+option+cmnd+shift+power. I can get it to go dark like it's rebooting, but the gray apple screen pops back up and about 3 seconds later the codes come back.

OS X :: MacBook Sleep And Barely Visible Kernel Panic Screen?

May 22, 2009

Something weird has happened twice in the last week or so - I close my MacBook (black), open it later (I think both times I moved it somewhere), and when I re-open the screen is black and I have to restart using the power button.

What I noticed this time is that I could barely make out text on the screen, and although I couldn't read the whole thing, it was definitely a kernel panic "grey screen of death":

I'm wondering why this could be happening - both times it definitely had to do with closing and re-opening the laptop, and I'm wondering what the dimmed screen (I could barely make out the words) says about the issue.

OS X :: Time Machine Causing Kernel Panic

Jun 1, 2008

Time Machine was doing its normal hourly backup when all of a sudden I got the multi-language gray shade of death. I restarted and tried to backup again, which resulted in another kernel panic. This time I tried entering Time Machine, and in the middle of "Connecting to Backup Volume," I get another kernel panic. This has never happened before I updated to 10.5.3, but I've had several backups since updating and this hasn't happened before just now, so I'm not sure it's a 10.5.3 issue.

[Log] ...

I have Time Machine pointed at a Time Capsule and I'm on the MacBook listed in my signature. I turned off Time Machine until I can figure this out.

OS X :: Kernel Panic Every Time I Plug In External Drive?

Jan 17, 2009

I'm getting kernel panics every time I plug in an external drive. This is happening on a MacBook Pro as well as on a Mac Mini (G4). Both are running 10.5.6.

The drive is one of the Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives that are having all sorts of other problems. I have it in a CoolMax USB 2.0 enclosure (this one: [URL] I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks and didn't have any problems until this morning when I consistently get this kernel panic.

Obviously I can't run Disk Utility on it, unless there's a way to plug it in without it automounting. I could boot my MBP to XP, but the drive has two partitions and both are HFS+. Ideally I would like to preserve the data on the drive. They're only backups, but I don't have access to the originals at the moment, as my main machine is out of commission. Lots of hardware problems lately.

Any ideas?
