Hardware :: Network Printer - No Model Number In List

Dec 5, 2009

I am trying to get G5 (10.4) to use a network printer MP160 connected to a windows XP machine.
This is what I have done so far: Downloaded and installed the latest MP160 printer package for the Mac. Plugged the MP160 directly into the Mac USB port, the printer is instantly recognised and is installed as the default printer. It prints just fine. This leads me to believe the MP160 driver exists in the Mac. Now I transfer the printer to the XP. Using another (wireless) networked windows laptop I have no problem printing to the XP printer so that shows the sharing is working correctly. At the Mac I open printer setup. I then add the printer, selecting it, where I see it listed on the XP machine in (mac) Windows Printing/Network Neighbourhood. The printer name is seen just as it is on the XP.

Now the point it all goes wrong. During the setup, the utility ask me to select the printer model I want to add from a list it displays under the canon group of drivers. No matter what I do the list cannot be updated or amended to include the MP160 model. The BJ gimp drivers don't appear to support the MP160. I get the print job message "Gimp printing.....20%" and various values depending on the model selected and eventually, "NT status network bad name error". The generic printer driver returns the same error. I have tried just about every type of connection using the setup utility and localhost 631 but I always end up at the same point, not being able to select the model. There are no networking issues as far as I can see. The Mac can see and use shared files on the windows machines.

MacBook Pro :: 13" - 2010 Model Versus 2009 Model

Oct 31, 2010

I am trying to decide whether to get the 2010 model or the cheaper 2009 model. These are the differences that I've found so far for the base model. For arguments sake, let's say they both have 4gb ram (most people selling them have upgraded to 4gb)

2010: 2.4ghz, longer battery, nvidia 320m

2009: 2.26ghz, (slightly) shorter battery, nvidia 9400m

Having a slightly slower cpu, less battery life (about 7 hours rather than 9) and a slightly weaker gpu don't bother me so much, as I will be mostly using the macbook pro for internet surfing and writing word documents

My question is, are there any other differences? (that would make me go for the 2010 rather than the 2009 model) - maybe differences in the display? shape? something else?

MacBook Air :: 1.86 Late 2008 Model Versus 2010 Model

Nov 2, 2010

i am contemplating buying a late 2008 mbp air i found for $800 on CL. it has the 1.86 ghz 2gig ram and an 128 gb ssd. would that be comparable to the new 2010 version? i know the new one will edge it out, but by how much? i do a lot of art using flash, illustrator, and ps but just want to use this machine occasionally when i travel, ill have another machine for the heavy lifting if needed be. is that a good deal? or should i just wait and get the 2010 version which is double that?

MacBook Pro :: 2.66GHz New Model Versus Previous Model Conundrum?

Aug 28, 2009

PC World (in the UK) are selling the old 2.66GHz 15" model for 1,149 (rather than 1,499 for the new model).

The differences between it and the new model are summarised below (as I understand them)

Battery: Old: 5hr, New:7hr non-swappable
Display: New: Better colour gamut (apparently?)
Processor: Old: 6MB cache, New: 3MB cache
Card bay: Old: Express34, New: SD

Of the above only the battery life is of any relevance to me (unless the display quality is really that different?). The SD card would be marginally more useful than the Express card.

MacBook Pro :: Ditching My A1226 Model MBP For The Newer Model?

Sep 9, 2009

I've been contemplating recently (as most mac users do) about switching my 2 year old MBP (2.2 ghz, 2gb ram, 8600m) to the new MBP (15" 2.8, newer gfx, touchpad and a few minor details).

I've been eying the ebay prices for some time and my particular model (with charger, snow leopard, original accessories but w/o box) is valued at about 700gbp. Perhaps people might disagree with me here - how much is it really worth ?

My main point / question is really at what point should I ditch the existing MBP in favor of the new mbp - does it really offer me that much of a benefit at this time to upgrade? I'd sure like the new graphics card in there (is it really that much better?) but I'm not sure there's a significant enough difference there.

On the other hand if I wait much longer the MBP will become pretty devalued and not get me much back for the new and improved MBP - maybe apple's going to improve them soon anyway?

IMac :: I3 3.06ghz 2010 Model Versus Mac Pro 3.0ghz 2007 Model?

Sep 1, 2010

I am about to buy a computer and just been doing some research. When I went to best buy and ran a geekbench score on the imac it was like around 5800.

A seller on ebay who is selling a Mac Pro 3.0 ghz just ran the score and posted the results of 6214

[URL]

Based off of this score alone wouldn't it mean that the 2007 Mac Pro is faster than the newer 2010 imac

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Write On SD Card

Mar 20, 2012

I have a macbook pro running Leopard 10.5.8 I have several SD cards that when I put into my SD card reader slot on the macbook pro I cannot write, delete or format. I can only read the card. I tried Disk Utility, formatting and partitioning the SD card are greyed out. Same with right-clicking "get info" on the card, I have only read access to all cards. Also the lock is not turned on, on any of the cards.I had a work around where I was copying everything from the card onto my harddrive, then popping the SD card back into my camera and having the camera format the card to erase everything. That worked fine until now I want to install a small program "magic lantern" onto my card for my camera, which i cannot do because i can only "read" the cards. is there a terminal command I can try to format the card so that I can read/write?

MacBook Pro :: How To Set Rights To Write On SD Card

Jun 19, 2012

I am using a 32 GB SDHC Card with my MacBookPro 13" running on Lion. As I put in the card the very first time I could use it properly, i.e. reading and writing. I have put about 10 GB music on it since I use the card only as audio source. The music plays just fine no matter in which device.

Recently, I wanted to put some more music on it but I do not have any rights to write on the card (only reading is permitted) even though I am using the same MBP. The card has the format FAT32 so no problem for Macs from this side. the lock on the card is not set to locked! As well, the card is pretty new and since I am able to properly read from it the contact plates can be assumed to work as they are supposed to, too.

why the rights to write have changed? Is this normal after it has been written on it the very first time? Can I (as administrator of my MBP) change the assignment of rights?

The Hard Disk Utility Program of Apple is not really useful in this case. All options are greyed out.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Can't Write Letter B

Dec 9, 2014

My computer began to get some strange errors - It is my MacBook Pro Retina 15" Mid-2012.My keyboard can't write the letters "B" and the danish letter "Å", it the same for both small and capital letter (B/b and Å/å).

But even though my keyboard won't write the two letters, it will still register the key is beefing push.when I sits and write this, it will change the text to bold - like turning the bold format on/off each time I push the B key. The same happens when I just push the left command key, so I can turn the bold text format on/off with my left command key. The right command key can't turn the bold format on/off, either only or with the "right cmd+b" - which for this forum should be the original short cut.

Both of my command keys denies to accept some shortcut like "cmd+t" in Safari to make a new tab. But the "cmd+n" works fine. I have no problem with writing the letter "t" or the "n" in the url address line. What I have tried so far without any result:- Resetting of the system management controller (SMC)

- Updated to Yosemite so I now have OS X 10.10.1

- Of course tried to restart.

- Seen my language hasn't been changed from Danish.

MacBook Pro :: No Write Access On Internal HDD?

Jun 21, 2014

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro. It's running almost daily since 2010 and now weird things happen after some uptime when I try to do stuff in Finder:

"The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." and if I try to sudo:

$ sudo ls

> sudo: Can't mkdir /var/db/sudo/username: File exists

> ... ls output ...

Furthermore, I cannot do anything write-related anymore, no deletion of files in the Finder, no opening of webpages. Eventually, I have to force shut it down by holding the power button.

I already wiped the HDD and reinstalled Mavericks from USB -- only to have this exact problem one day after setting everything up again. I even bought a new HDD, which worked quite well for a couple of days, only to result in the same error again.

Additional info:

OS X 10.9.3
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (upgraded from 2 GB three years ago)
250 GB HDD / now 1 TB HDD
No dual boot / Bootcamp

I'm just wondering why there is no option for 13" 1.86/128 to 2.13/128. Only 256 SSD model can be upgraded to 2.13. Apple thinks that they just don't want same option as rev c.? I think that's not fair to who just want only 128SSD for 2.13Ghz. 256SSD would great for everybody but I'm just the one who save extra $300.

MacBook Air :: Buying A Refurb 1.8 Or 1.6 SSD Model?

Apr 6, 2009

I've decided to go with an SSD refurb and am torn between the 1.6 and 1.8 SSD model. The 1.8 is an extra $100, but it's $100 which may be over my budget and I'm not sure if I'll really notice a difference. The reason I want the 1.8 is because I'm coming from a 2.0 MB and 1.8 doesn't seem as bad as downgrading to a 1.6.
