MacBook Air :: Using MBA And Matrox Dual-Head?
Jan 20, 2009Has anyone tried this with the Dual Head DVI? I'm assuming that it would go MiniDisplayPort to VGA, then Matrox, and out. Does it work, and is there any lag?

View 2 RepliesI have been able to plug in small speakers and headphones in the past into the port on the left of my laptop. I just tried to plug in to my new receiver for the first time in months and, nothing... So I have tried my headphones and mini speakers - still nothing. I'm pretty certain it's the port. Or could it be software thing? Please help, I finally got my projector working and now I have wimpy sound!
P.S. I recently updated to Lion, in case that is significant.

I have my mail accounts in both my Macbook and iPad. If I have opened the mail in my computer I DON`T want my iPad to pick them up too.
But if I first pick them up in the iPad, I still want the computer to pick them up.

I have a new 2.13/SSD Air which has been awesome with no lines and fast enough for me to do all my work. Since this is my first Mac (coming from the PC world), I am still getting used to how OS X works. I really like the way OS X installs apps - so simple and transparent compared to Windows. One thing that has been bugging me is whenever I do something like install apps, eject disks or dismount apps, there is "uncoiling spring" like sound coming from the machine. The sound reminds of a hard drive disk head parking when the disk stops spinning. Since I have the SSD, I expect things to be completely silent all the time. Is this an OSX sound or do I have a bad SSD?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just installed it in my late 2008 uMBP. It's SUPER fast! Best upgrade ever.
Does anyone know if this drive has head parking (or whatever they call it)? Should I disable the SMS in the MBP?
Finally got around to testing out the differences in compression performance between my Matrox CompressHD PCI-e card and QMaster using 4 CPU cores.
Test was done using Compressor 3.51 on a MOV sequence captured at 1080i 60 (HDV) (Field upper) -- nothing was done to the sequence that is 1 min 2 secs long 206.4MB file size (not even de-interlaced).
Matrox CompressHD card software is 1.8.1 (firmware updated).
My goal was to get the 1920 x 1080 (actually 1440 x 1080) footage close to Apple TV 1280 x 720 progressive format (m4v).
The Results:
1. H.264 for Apple Devices 1280 x 720 (16:9 960 x 720) 5Mbps, progressive 44.1kHz Stereo (Medium quality 50) single pass without Qmaster:
CPU Usage - User 68-71% - System 5-7%
Time = 1 min 49 sec -- file size 39.9 MB
2. H.264 for Apple Devices 1280 x 720 (16:9 960 x 720) 5Mbps, progressive 44.1kHz Stereo (Medium quality 50) single pass with Qmaster 4 cores:
CPU Usage - User 87% - System 7%
Time = 2 min 01 sec -- file size 39.9 MB
3. H.264 (mov) Custom 1280 x 720 5Mpbs, progressive 29.97 fps - 44.1kHz Stereo High Quality Multi-pass using 4 cores Qmaster:
CPU Usage - User 88% - System 6%
Time = 4 min 02 sec -- file size 38.7 MB
4. Matrox MAX H.264 (mov) Custom 1280 x 720 5Mpbs, progressive 29.97 fps - 44.1kHz Stereo:
CPU Usage - User 28-30% - System 8%
Time = 1 min 06 sec -- file size 39.7 MB
What I find interesting is that the Apple TV quality was actually pretty good, the color was a little less vibrant that results from #3 and #4. What is really strange is that QMaster with 4 cores was actually slower than a without QMaster?? This leads me to believe the .m4v codec is able to detect and use more than 1 core regardless of QMaster -- in fact, adding QMaster just takes a little away from the efficiency of the .m4v codec.
It was nice to see the Matrox CompressHD only using 28-30%, allowing my system to be very responsive to doing other tasks.
Just a small sample of H.264 results, but with the type of work I do I get anywhere from about 2X to 4X faster compression times using the Matrox CompressHD.
This is probably old news for most of you, but it's new life for my aging 2007 MacPro
I have been looking into solutions to have two external monitors hooked up to my mbpro and found these two. Both get the job done, but with a huge difference in price. I was wondering if anyone has experience using both? The matrox seems better, but I think the eVGA will do well enough for what I will be using it for (light photoshopping).
View 12 Replies View RelatedI bought a 24" iMac to replace my 18 month old Macbook Pro. It's nice and everything but it doesn't want to cooperate with my Matrox DualHead2Go and I'm wondering if anyone might know why. When I had it attached to the DVI port of the MBP I was able to use the MBP display and two external monitors, each set to 1680x1050. When I attach it to the iMac, it works but the best it will do is less...like each set to 1280x960 or so. Is the video card in the MBP really more capable or is it because the iMac has a much larger screen or is it something else I'm missing?
View 17 Replies View Relatedven an everyday user may consider such a card if the price is within budget which currently isn't. It isn't targeted at gamers who need every ounce of performance though.
It appears to be geared towards Apple since it debuted with onboard DisplayPorts. However, it should be noted on their specs page that the system requirements currently do not list any version of Mac OSes. Matrox do list Linux support though. Do note that they didn't leave out regular DVI users. Direct Link for more details on the specs.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been assigned the task of installing new memory modules into the iMacs at work. When I got to my supervisor's iMac, I discovered someone had been in to service the memory compartment at least once before. Only this person must have used a screwdriver that was too big to begin with and then cranked the central screw on the cover plate and stripped the head of the screw in the process. So now I cannot get this screw loosened. I obviously don't want to bend or damage anything. What would be a viable solution besides taking it in to a service tech?

I searched but couldn't find anything that I needed. I picked up some MDDs(dual 1.25 & FW800 1ghz) with bad power supplies and eying up another MDD(Dual 867) which is working. Will the dual 1.25 and single 1ghz processor daughter card work on the previous model? I know the System clock is different and heard about removing a resister on the first gens to 167mhz FSB. I will also try and transplant the PSU too to check to see if my 2 MDDs fully work or not.

I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:
Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?
Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?
Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?
I scanned the posts and didn't see this question, but honestly I didn't read all 20K + messages.I bought in late 2005 a dual 2.3 G5, about 6 months before the Mac/Windows combination came out. Does anyone know if I can upgrade or is it too costly to do so compared to buying a new machine.

Im looking to buy on of these adapters from apple and I'm not sure which to purchase. I know the single link adapter would be good for the 24in monitor ill be hooking it up to about half the time, but the other half of the time ill have it hooked up to either a 40in or 52in HDTV. Will the single link be able to handle this or will I need,or am I at least better off with the dual link adapter? On a side not, what does the dual link actually offer over the single link, and what is the usb adapter on it for?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI took the mac plunge this past week and so far I'm loving OS X. I would eventually like to upgrade the stock 250gb to a 640gb, and install the kingston 40gb ssd drive into an optibay as the dedicated boot/app drive. First, for a dual ssd/hdd system, putting the ssd in the optibay is the correct strategy right? What is the best way to attempt this switch?
If I replace both drives at once, I'm screwed because I need the optical drive to install os x, correct? So should I install a OS onto the 640 first, and then install the ssd? I'm also relatively new to time machine, so I'm not sure what its capabilities are--will i be able to only back up my applications? In the end, I'd like to be able to boot from the ssd and store videos/pics/etc in the HD.
Raid 0 is really cool. Can I ask where i could buy that thing? I mean the cd-rom model.

View 9 Replies View Relatedso I love Macs but they're frustrating the hell out of me. I wanted to run dual 20" displays (portrait) and one 30" displays using a Mac Mini and a Macbook Pro. I know the new Mini should do it, but I've heard bad things about Apple's Dual Link DVI adapter. Also, I don't think there's a way for a Macbook Pro to drive a 30" Display and a 20." Am I missing something? What should I do?I'd much rather buy a Mac Mini than the Mac Pro which is way too powerful.
