Mac Pro :: Dual 867MHz Is Now Dual 800MHz After Motherboard Replacement?

Nov 4, 2009

i replaced the motherboard on my dual 867MHz G4 MDD.the computer turns on now, and i did a fresh 10.4.11 install...but i noticed that it says "Dual 800" instead of "Dual 867" in my "About This Mac" now. i typed "sysctl hw.cpufrequency" in the terminal and discovered that it is actually running at 800MHz, and not 867MHz.

Mac Pro :: Will Dual 1.25ghz Work In A Dual 867mhz MDD

Jan 16, 2009

I searched but couldn't find anything that I needed. I picked up some MDDs(dual 1.25 & FW800 1ghz) with bad power supplies and eying up another MDD(Dual 867) which is working. Will the dual 1.25 and single 1ghz processor daughter card work on the previous model? I know the System clock is different and heard about removing a resister on the first gens to 167mhz FSB. I will also try and transplant the PSU too to check to see if my 2 MDDs fully work or not.

Hardware :: MDD Dual 867MHz CPU Overheating?

Jul 30, 2008

MDD Dual 867MHz CPU Overheating

I have noted the large number of problems with this particular model and heat issues, but I just received this stripped MDD to do an upgrade on the cheap for my B&W G3 server. In hindsight this might not have been the best unit to upgrade with, but for $72 on ebay (seller was unsure it was dual processor--which may have helped lack of bidding), I figured it was worth it.

After putting RAM to 2GB, putting in an ATI 9200 PCI graphics card, and inserting my HDs from the B&W with updated Tiger installed, everything booted fine with no problems. Dual processors checked out, RAM was fine, and all drives loaded without glitch.

Next go round, after 20-30 minutes it does the sleep/freeze thing everyone has mentioned here and elsewhere. All fans work and have tested with door open and high speed fan directly over heat sink and it still shuts down. Temperature Monitor has it rising above 80c and climbing, which I no longer let go until "closing" to avoid any more damage.

The weird thing about this is that during all of this, the aluminum heat sink remains relatively cool, as if it is not making any contact.

Is it possible it just needs a pad or compound to make contact and dissipate the heat through the sink etc., or does this sound like either a faulty sensor or failing CPU? The compound would be an easy fix (and it sounds logical), but I may just be missing the obvious here. My hope is that the prior owner just did not bother to find out why it did this and cannibalized the unit.

I could take out all the drives, etc. to reduce the heat build up, but I want this to function as a feasible house server that can be left on most of the time + because of the cool heat sink the behavior does not seem to relate to the heat in the housing.

PowerPC :: G4 Dual 1GHZ Over Ibook G3 800MHZ

Jun 25, 2007

I have been viewing the forums for the past few months and have finally joined MacRumors as I have purchased an ibook G3 (first mac). I love it to death, it is so portable and even runs like a champ considering it is almost 4 years old. The ibook has a 800MHZ G3 processor along with maxed out ram at 640MB. Anyway I am planing on buying an TV before school starts up again and would like to encode my dvds to h.264. I was wondering if my computer can handle this task. BTW I would need to buy a dvd drive for my computer along with an external HDD. My other option is to buy a friends Powermac G4 with dual 1GHZ processors(he is selling it at $250) it already has a dvd drive and two 200GB HDD so that will save me ~ 150. As I am new to macs and would like to know if the Powermac will significantly make a difference in encoding times or should I just stick with my ibook and save the $100?

OS X :: Power Mac Dual G5 Dual Video Cards

Nov 2, 2009

I have a Powermac Dual G5 @2.0ghz, with 8gbs of ram, and 2 1tb drives running the latest version of 10.5. The problem I have is that I have 4 LCD monitors that I was using with my PC. I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. Please help, I cant go on using this awesome machine with only one 19inch LCD. and I cant afford to buy new monitors

Mac Pro :: Upgrade Base Dual 2.4GHz Quad Core To Dual 2.93GHz Hex Core

Oct 3, 2010

I'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:

Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?

Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?

Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?

PowerPC :: Motherboard Removal / Replacement - Any Docs To Guide

Oct 2, 2009

I have a replacement motherboard (G4 MDD 1.25 dual) coming in and even though I have a very talented and technical friend coming by to help, it'd sure be nice to have some instructions on removing the current motherboard and the subsequent install of the newer one. Mine is having kernel panics about 98% of the time on attempted startups and I've tried (along with the Apple Store Genius Bar) everything I know how to do or have Googled and read. I think it's perhaps a USB bus issue.

I did manage to get it to boot from the Apple Hardware Test and everything passed. And, one of the USB connectors on the back of the machine is damaged, so I figure a complete motherboard swap should eliminate all possibilities except for maybe the CPU which seemed to pass. So back to the original query. Are there docs somewhere to guide one in the removal of the motherboard? I run a recording studio with this machine and I'm dead in the water! I am looking into either a new MacIntel or possibly a used G5 to replace it with.

I tried Snow leopard with the same setup, and there is no way to have both monitor working. No signals reaches the second screen. Worst, once boot... If I run the "screen detection", both DVI signals are stopped. SL seems the both screen, I can see them in the system configuration. Both are stated as "connected", I can even "move" windows on the second screen but of course this is useless cause there is no signal. Anyone here having the same problem ? any idea to fix it?

I also can't click the flip-box to select different packages in the Loop Browser. I haven't noticed this happening in other applications. DOES ANYONE READING THIS KNOW HOW I CAN GET SOME HELP FROM APPLE? I am told i can't even buy apple care because my computer is too old. I don't know what to do. Tried trashing prefs. Not running any failed audio units. Nothing new in software update. Don't really know what else to do.

Mac Pro :: Need New Logic Board For Dual 1 Ghz MDD

Mar 6, 2007

I just got a Dual 1 Ghz MDD. It's a big step up from my 500 Mhz Sawtooth!

The problem is that it (supposedly) needs a new logic board. I've been watching logic boards on ebay, but I'm not finding anything with matching part numbers. My logic board has the following numbers:

630-4373 EEHNNW
448F2
KD2370366NFGA
630-4269

I guess the important numbers are the 630-* numbers. Perhaps one it the
'as designed' rev part number, and one is the 'as manufactured' rev part number?

I have the dual 1 Ghz processors; would they work on a 1.25 Ghz logic board? Most of the boards I see on ebay are 820-1476-A, or 820-1308-A.
What's the difference between the 820- boards and the 630- boards?

I don't have a complete service file for the MDD; can anyone email a copy?
