MacBook Air :: Finding Wireless NAS

Feb 15, 2008

Now that I have my air I'm looking around for storage. I thought it would be nifty if there was a wireless NAS solutions that I could just carry around in my laptop pack and have the Air find it automatically with out the need for using the USB port. It doesn't look like there are any that are battery powered (yet), and some of them are far to clunky to be a portable option. Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

MacBook :: Finding Wireless Adapter?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a macbook that is not wireless n enabled. i know i could take apart the macbook and install a new airport card that is and that would work (and probably will one day soon) for the time being would a usb adapter work the same?

Also airport seems to drop its connection pretty frequently and doesn't like to work more than a few feet away from the docking station. I'm hoping it's because the airport card is old. Would an adapter fix this as well?

MacBook Air :: Finding Wireless Storage For Time Machine

Sep 8, 2008

While I would LOVE to get a 1TB Time Capsule and use it with Time Machine on my MBA, that is a whole lot of money when I already have a wireless router that works just fine and I can find 1TB of storage for much cheaper than that... My question is, what are my other options? I have a Mac mini so my first thought was to plug a big ol' USB HD into that and have the MBA backup to that... Well I could access files on the HD from the MBA just fine but Time Machine refused to use it for backups...

I have seen little wireless adapter boxes with USB ports for adding printers and HD's to your home network, would something like this work or would I run into the same issue with Time Machine not wanting to use it as a backup device?

Hardware :: Finding Wireless Router

May 21, 2009

I'm moving into a house (woot), and I obviously need some sort of wireless router. I got my parents' place setup with an AEBS, and I was wondering if there's some major reason I shouldn't go with one. I haven't had any problems with it since a firmware update many months ago, and even then it was only disk-mounting issues.

Software :: Finding Wireless Network Priority?

Jun 13, 2008

I share my wireless internet with my 2 roommates free of charge. However, every now and then one of them will queue up a list of music to download (for example) and it bogs down my own connection considerably.

I'm looking for a way to prioritize my host computer so that the others don't overpower mine when I'm playing an online game or something that needs a steady connection. I tried looking in System Preferences>Network>Network Port Configurations, but that doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for.

Hardware :: Finding Wireless Version Of Apple Keyboard W/Numeric Keypad?

Nov 3, 2009

Can someone explain to me why Apple has refused to make a wireless version of their full size keyboard with the numeric keypad? Their wired version is great, but I can't stand wires. When my full size white Apple keyboard went to the sandbox in the sky last year, I dropped $120 for a brand new one I found online (high price to the fact Apple didn't make them anymore then), and now that one has just taken a dump -- I spilt literally three drops of water on it and the space bar stopped working completely.

Now I'm stuck with Apple's micro wireless keyboard until they come out with the full size wireless one - if ever.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Join Wireless Network/Will All Traffic Go Mac Wireless Router

Jan 5, 2011

I have just got my 1Tb time capsule and there are a lot of confusing descriptions of how to connect it.

At the moment I have just selected "join existing wireless network" which is a ADSL 2.4ghz G Router that came with my internet package (Thompson TG585 v7).

Does this mean that all traffic goes via the ADSL Router and that I will not be using the 5ghz band when I back up so that all the data will follow a path like this and have slow data rates? :

MAC --2.4ghz--> ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> TC

or will I be communicating directly with the TC at 5ghz for backups and data transfer and 2.4ghz with the ADSL router for internet like this? :

MAC --5ghz--> TC
ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> MAC

If this is not a good setup, what setup would allow me to get the full speed to the time capsule and be connected to the internet.

Hardware :: Extended Wireless Network - Multiple Airport Express Wireless Setup

May 14, 2009

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Possible To Use Mac's Ethernet Port To Extend Wireless Network To A Non-wireless Device?

May 3, 2012

OK, I asked this question previously, but not quite succinct enough, I think. I have a Pioneer home theater receiver that is network capable, but not wireless capable. I want to get this thing on my home network without having to purchase another device as my Mini resides no more than 36" away from it.So far, I have been able to get the receiver to connect to the internet through Internet Sharing on the Mini, but it remains blind to, and invisible to my wireless network. I simply want to connect the receiver to my Mini via ethernet cable and have it see and be seen on my wireless network. url...

MacBook :: Using Wireless When MB Closed?

Sep 30, 2010

I have a late 2008 unibody macbook connected to a brand new Samsung monitor via a displayport to DVI cable and everything works great until I shut my macbook. The external monitor continues to work fine but my wireless seems to lose connection, my desk is approximately 15 feet from a wireless repeater and Airport appears to have a full signal but it will act as if there is a bad connection until I open my macbook back up and then the internet works fine.

I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that some displayport to DVI cables do not have sufficient shielding therefore interfering with the wireless signal but if that was the issue it should be effecting the wireless signal at all times, not just when the macbook is closed.
