MacBook :: Backlight On Keyboards

Feb 8, 2009

I know that the base 2.0GHz MacBooks do not feature the backlit keyboards of the higher-end models, but I was wondering if the actual backlight is physically in these lower-end models and just disabled in firmware or software? Or is it missing entirely?

MacBook Pro :: Thinkpad Vs Apple Keyboards

Aug 28, 2010

I just want your opinions on which keyboard is better... the Traditional, Thinkpad-reputable Lenovo X201 keyboard or the Chiclet keyboard of the MacBook Pro. I have experience with Chiclet keyboards with the first generation MacBook I used from 2006 to 2007 and the HP DM3z I am currently using since I bought it in October 2009, and am really satisfied with it, but also was really satsifed with my MacBook Pro "classic" keyboard.

MacBook Pro :: Can Laptops Use Remote Keyboards

Apr 29, 2012

If a MacBook Pro 15 is your only computer, can it use a remote keyboard? I find that I would rather use the ergonomic keyboards as opposed to the keyboard that is found on the laptop itself. I can type considerably faster with more accuracy and getting to the mouse rather than using the touch pad is also quicker and less time consuming.

MacBook Pro :: Sealed Keyboards To Prevent Against Liquid Damage?

Jul 1, 2009

I work at our university support desk, and the other day we had a girl bring her macbook pro in. The twist is that she did not shut her mbp off and carried it over open in a downpour. Needless to say it was absolutely drenched. Fortunately the computer suffered no side affects. I personally have spilled a drink on mine (I proceeded to turn it off and remove the battery) but I suffered no side affects. So out of curiosity, do MBs/MBPs have sealed keyboards to prevent against liquid damage?

Hardware :: New Macbook: Backlit Keyboard?

Nov 10, 2008

I am considering whether or not I will get the backlit keyboard model or not. I want to save $300, but I also want to be able to see the keys (within reason).

I like my current PBG4's backlit keyboard, and sometimes find it necessary, however, it does have low contrast silver keys with white lettering. Since the Macbooks have black keys with white lettering, and therefore more contrast, I am wondering if this will improve visibility in low light conditions enough so I won't have to have the backlight.

Do any of you have the new MacBook sans backlit keyboard, and if so what are your impressions of being able to see the keys in a dim (not dark) room?

Mac :: MacBook Top Case Of The 2.4 GHz - Backlit Keyboard?

Jul 12, 2009

I went to the apple store the other day to see if the top case of my (late 2008) MacBook's top case could be replaced (due to some sort of discoloration in the metal). Anyway, they are replacing it free of charge, but i was just wondering if i could tell them to use the top case of the 2.4 GHz MacBook (I have the 2.0 GHz, doesn't include backlit keyboard). I realllllllly want this backlit keyboard, and a replacement by myself is totally out of the question. Please help, i really need a shiny keyboard

MacBook Pro :: Longevity Of Backlit Keyboard?

May 14, 2010

I would believe having your backlit keyboard on max would kill the life span of the led lights? curious to know if anyone has it on max majority of the time to have the laptop look fancier rather then those who use the backlit accordingly to prolong its life time.

But in the cases for those who do set the backlit keyboard on max for a long time (speaking of months, even years) any issues with it? any led lights or keys breaking or stopped working?

MacBook Pro :: Backlit Keyboard Not Working On It?

Feb 23, 2012

I have a MBP on OS X version 10.6.8, the mid-2009 model. The problem: I can't get my keyboard to light up. When I press on the F5 and F6 button I see the image of the keyboard light pop up on the screen but it has a line through it telling me I can't do it. These feature worked a couple days ago, and I didn't change any settings since then. I have tried everything. I made sure the settings were right and reset them. I have tried to update my software which told me I was up to date. I have put my laptop in a pitch black room. I have covered the sensors. I have done an SMC reset as well as a PRAM reset. None of these things worked. I did download the LabTick app, which then I was able to light up my keyboard but I don't want to have to use a 3rd party application. I would like to have my keyboard adjust automatically. I have uninstalled LabTick.

MacBook :: Enabling F5 / F6 For On Non-backlit-keyboard AlBooks

Jan 15, 2009

System: Silver Macbook
OS X Ver.: Leopard
Backlit Keyboard?: No

Essentially my problem is that I'm unable to set new shortcuts for the F5 and F6 keys for my Silver Macbook. Since it doesn't have a backlit keyboard, there's no function for F5 and F6. I'd like to make them go to shortcuts such as "Show Desktop" and "Spaces", both of which are supported under the "Keyboard Shortcuts" Tab of "Keyboard & Mouse". So, I have them configured to match up to F5 and F6, but they do not activate the corresponding function when pressed.

I have the "Use function keys as standard function keys" checkmark unset:I apologize for the fairly small problem...I just really want to free up those two keys! I appreciate any response.

MacBook Pro :: Blank Backlit Screen On Boot?

Dec 8, 2014

My MBP 13" Retina just stopped rendering the screen. On boot, it chimes and the back light comes on but that's it. At first I thought it was non responsive, but when I connect an external monitor I can see that it works fine. It's just the primary display that doesn't render anything (only backlight with blank, black screen).

A few details worth knowing:

1) Last time I saw my primary display work, I had 10% battery left, I shut the lid. Next time I opened the lid, around 2 days later, it was just blank and backlit. I did a forced restart and from then on it only gave me a blank backlit black screen.

2) Works well if i boot it with an external monitor connected. when the chime comes on, I immediately shut the lid and use only the external display with external keyboard and mouse.

3) Video gets laggy when I use it on dual monitor mode (not the case before this problem happened). I boot up the macbook with an external display connected. No video on both screens. I have to login blindly before the second monitor gets video. Primary display still doesn't render anything, albeit showing a lighted blank black screen.

4) I've already tried resetting the PRAM. didn't work.

MacBook Air :: Using Backlit Keyboard Swap From Previous Generation?

Oct 21, 2010

I'm excited about the re-vamped MacBook Air, and am considering a 13" model. Much to my dismay, no illuminated keyboard anymore! I understand keeping certain options only for the Pro to encourage upgrading, but this one may be a deal-breaker.

Since the keys are the same style, would it be possible to take off all the keys, swap out the board underneath and replace it all with the backlit counterparts from the older MacBook Air? What all would be involved?

MacBook :: Added New Feature To Backlit Keyboard - Customization?

Jul 13, 2009

I could be wrong, but I did not hear anything about Apple revising the Backlit Keyboard on their new MBPs that came out early June. Was this not made public for a reason or just small upgrade that needed no advertising? Or am I totally living on another planet and everyone knew about this? I checked one out for the first time today and.... now, there is a light sensor(next to the cam) to automatically turn the Backlit Keyboard off during daylight when you don't need it - to save battery life. it makes sense, but personally I want the option to always have it off to save battery, no matter the conditions around. I just found a reason to not want a 13" MBP over my uni MB New MBPs Users (June 09 or later) - is there customization with this new feature?

MacBook Pro :: Backlit Keyboard Doesn't Come Back On When Typing

Nov 30, 2014

I have a Macbook Pro 13in. It is not a retina. I just bought it from apple.  Anyway it works fine I just noticed one thing about the keyboard and I'm sort of new to macs.

OK so the backlight on the keyboard times out after 5 sec (that's what I have it set to) the thing is the light will come back on after it times out when you move the mouse or touch the trackpad, but not if you start typing.  I noticed that shift, fn, control, alt/options, and Fkeys will bring it back.  The peculiar thing though is that while I'm typing, that will keep the light on.  Soon as i stop for 5 sec won't just turn on if I start typing again, gotta hit one of those keys or touch the pad.

I could just set the timer longer, but idk seems like a minor flaw.  Unfortunately I can kind of see that, however there does seem to be hotkeys.  Just as long as one could customize them, maybe add the entire keyboard.
