View 11 RepliesI have a MBP on OS X version 10.6.8, the mid-2009 model. The problem: I can't get my keyboard to light up. When I press on the F5 and F6 button I see the image of the keyboard light pop up on the screen but it has a line through it telling me I can't do it. These feature worked a couple days ago, and I didn't change any settings since then. I have tried everything. I made sure the settings were right and reset them. I have tried to update my software which told me I was up to date. I have put my laptop in a pitch black room. I have covered the sensors. I have done an SMC reset as well as a PRAM reset. None of these things worked. I did download the LabTick app, which then I was able to light up my keyboard but I don't want to have to use a 3rd party application. I would like to have my keyboard adjust automatically. I have uninstalled LabTick.

Just got my new MacBook Pro. I have a problem with the keyboard. I can manually get it to light up with F5/F6. but it wont light on its own when its dark. the display dims in darkness so the sensor is working.

I have tried messing with the keyboard settings as well as the F5 and F6 buttons. The keyboard does not even come on in low lit conditions. Why is my backlit keyboard no longer working?

This is the damage. Everything works expect the backlit keyboards. How much would a repair cost?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am considering whether or not I will get the backlit keyboard model or not. I want to save $300, but I also want to be able to see the keys (within reason).
I like my current PBG4's backlit keyboard, and sometimes find it necessary, however, it does have low contrast silver keys with white lettering. Since the Macbooks have black keys with white lettering, and therefore more contrast, I am wondering if this will improve visibility in low light conditions enough so I won't have to have the backlight.
Do any of you have the new MacBook sans backlit keyboard, and if so what are your impressions of being able to see the keys in a dim (not dark) room?
I've searched and it seems no more backlit keyboard?

Anyway, they are replacing it free of charge, but i was just wondering if i could tell them to use the top case of the 2.4 GHz MacBook (I have the 2.0 GHz, doesn't include backlit keyboard). I realllllllly want this backlit keyboard, and a replacement by myself is totally out of the question. Please help, i really need a shiny keyboard
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would believe having your backlit keyboard on max would kill the life span of the led lights? curious to know if anyone has it on max majority of the time to have the laptop look fancier rather then those who use the backlit accordingly to prolong its life time.
But in the cases for those who do set the backlit keyboard on max for a long time (speaking of months, even years) any issues with it? any led lights or keys breaking or stopped working?
i tried researching but could not find anything. I just purchased the macbook pro 2.4ghz this past week and the backlit keyboard light is white while ive seen other videos where the light looks more blue than white. Are the newer models coming with a white backlit keyboard?

Backlit Keyboard?: No
Essentially my problem is that I'm unable to set new shortcuts for the F5 and F6 keys for my Silver Macbook. Since it doesn't have a backlit keyboard, there's no function for F5 and F6. I'd like to make them go to shortcuts such as "Show Desktop" and "Spaces", both of which are supported under the "Keyboard Shortcuts" Tab of "Keyboard & Mouse". So, I have them configured to match up to F5 and F6, but they do not activate the corresponding function when pressed.
I have the "Use function keys as standard function keys" checkmark unset:I apologize for the fairly small problem...I just really want to free up those two keys! I appreciate any response.
I was recently using my backlit keyboard of pretty much the first time and I realized that middle right side of the keyboard is slightly dimmer that the other side. I can still see the keys and its not a huge difference but its enough to be noticeable and somewhat distracting.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm excited about the re-vamped MacBook Air, and am considering a 13" model. Much to my dismay, no illuminated keyboard anymore! I understand keeping certain options only for the Pro to encourage upgrading, but this one may be a deal-breaker.
Since the keys are the same style, would it be possible to take off all the keys, swap out the board underneath and replace it all with the backlit counterparts from the older MacBook Air? What all would be involved?
I could be wrong, but I did not hear anything about Apple revising the Backlit Keyboard on their new MBPs that came out early June. Was this not made public for a reason or just small upgrade that needed no advertising? Or am I totally living on another planet and everyone knew about this? I checked one out for the first time today and.... now, there is a light sensor(next to the cam) to automatically turn the Backlit Keyboard off during daylight when you don't need it - to save battery life. it makes sense, but personally I want the option to always have it off to save battery, no matter the conditions around. I just found a reason to not want a 13" MBP over my uni MB New MBPs Users (June 09 or later) - is there customization with this new feature?

I have a Macbook Pro 13in. It is not a retina. I just bought it from apple. Anyway it works fine I just noticed one thing about the keyboard and I'm sort of new to macs.
OK so the backlight on the keyboard times out after 5 sec (that's what I have it set to) the thing is the light will come back on after it times out when you move the mouse or touch the trackpad, but not if you start typing. I noticed that shift, fn, control, alt/options, and Fkeys will bring it back. The peculiar thing though is that while I'm typing, that will keep the light on. Soon as i stop for 5 sec won't just turn on if I start typing again, gotta hit one of those keys or touch the pad.
I could just set the timer longer, but idk seems like a minor flaw. Unfortunately I can kind of see that, however there does seem to be hotkeys. Just as long as one could customize them, maybe add the entire keyboard.

I love my 11.6" Air but the lack of a backlit keyboard is killing me. And why on earth are the freaking letters on the keys dark grey? If Apple released a new Air next month with an i3 or i5 ULV or Sandy Bridge ULV and a backlit keyboard I would feel compelled upgrade even at ridiculous cost to myself. Is there a real reason why there are no backlit keys on the Air? Is Apple just forcing me to upgrade to the next model when released?
Just not sure how it went down. They are in a clean room. Looking at the Air. Seems like someone would have said, "thing would really benefit with a backlit kayboard" and that somebody else would have said "yeah, we are Apple, leaders in design" and then Jobs would chime in, "Damn straight. Make it so." Where did it breakdown?
So I've recently purchased the new 13" MBP, and to my understanding, there is a light sensor that turns up the brightness of the backlit keyboard and screen when in dark environments.
However, the problem with my MBP is that when I turn on the lights in my room, the screen brightness and backlit keyboard both turn brighter, and when I turn off the lights, the screen and keyboard grow dimmer, which is exactly the opposite of what is supposed to happen.
I have 'Illuminate Keyboard in Low Light Conditions' Checked in system preferences and the keyboard is still lit up when the room is fully lit? Wouldn't only light up when the room is dark? I'm pressing keys and its always lighting up? its probably not even an issue and I'm over thinking it?
