Mac Pro :: Dual 1Ghz MDD As Main Work Computer

Mar 17, 2008

I am about to acquire a dual 1ghz MDD powermac g4 and was thinking of turning it into my main work computer. I do graphic design and own licenses to both cs2 and cs3. I also have retail versions of tiger and leopard. My question is what combination would be reasonable with this machine and if its reasonable using hardware this old for print design. I am not pro or a demanding user, but I do a fair amount illustrator, photoshop, and indesign work.

File sizes almost always well under 100mb. Right now I am using a Macbook Pro and I am aware that its much faster than this Power Mac, but I really would appreciate something I can have multiple hds in. It has 1gb of ram, and a radeon 9600 video card. Its also the non firewire 800 version. (2002)

MacBook :: Main Difference Between Two Computers

Mar 19, 2010

What are the main differences between these two computers, apart from the looks obviously? They're fairly similar in price and I'm unsure which to buy. I thought it'd be the graphics card but I looked and they're the same - I generally only use my laptop for the internet, doing work and watching TV but I'd like to be able to play some 3D games (like Sims 3, sad I know!).

MacBook Pro :: External Display As Main

Apr 17, 2012

I am wondering if there is a way to make an external display automatically work as the main display when plugged into my MacBook Pro.  I just picked up the stuff needed to be able to connect to an external display and it has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 which has a higher resolution than my MacBook Pro built in display does and I'm wondering if there is a way to just basically have the external display work as the main display when connected to the MacBook.  I know you can mirror which is what I'm doing now, but the problem with this is like I said it won't let me use it at its max resolution as it is different than the MBP's resolution and doesn't look as good because of it.  I am wanting to basically set it up where it will be a desktop type when I'm at home and when I'm out, it will be a portable.  I don't need a dual screen setup but would love to have it work that way if possible.  So far the only way I can get it to work at the max resolution of the external screen is to have a dual monitor setup where the MBP is the main and the external screen is the 2nd screen and I really don't like that setup because of the way that the screen and the MBP sit by each other.

MacBook :: Just Want To Use External Monitor As Main Screen

Jul 20, 2009

I have a white MB (early 2008). I'm going to be getting an external monitor soon with a native resolution of 1920x1200 - the highest that the MB's Intel GMA X3100 will support. I know that I can open System Preferences > Display and then click the little menubar and drag it to the other monitor to make it the primary. Here is the thing: I want to just use my 24" monitor and not use the MB's screen with it (I have an external keyboard and mouse).

Should I...
1. Use the two displays as an extended desktop and then (leave the MacBook lid open) just turn the brightness on the MB all the way off so the screen is black (no back light)?
or...
2. Just close the MacBook and use it in clam shell mode? I watch Hulu and YouTube a lot which causes the CPU load to increase and fans to spin up.... do I have to worry about over heating? I would be using the 24" monitor exclusively all the time and then take the MB when I go to class. Will this just ruin my MB pre-maturely?

OS X :: Macbook - How To Disable The Main Display Without Sleep Mode

Feb 23, 2010

I'm using my Macbook Pro as a desktop computer. It is connect to my 32" LCD TV through a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI and a DVI -> HDMI cable.
All is working correctly, except that I don't want to use the Macbook display, I just want to disable it.I know I can just turn the brightness all the way down until there's no image, but this method won't properly disable the display.
Another way is to close the Macbook, wait for it to go in sleep mode (white light blinks) and then move the mouse until the screen appears in the TV. This method really disables the main display (it no longer appears in the Displays pannel at System Preferences), but is a lot inconvenient. I don't want to have to close the Macbook everytime I boot my system and don't want to let the Macbook powered on 24/7, even in sleep mode. I like to just turn my computer off and then power it on whenever I need to.

MacBook Air :: It Slow Upon Downloads After Main-board Replacement

Jul 6, 2012

I use a 4 yr. old MBA, the non wedge style thing with poor connectivity (just one USB connector). I am the only user and the MBA 98% of the time is hooked up to a LED cinema display (also about 4 yrs old) and connected to the LAN via the USB hub at the cinema display/Apple USB-Ethernet connector (4yrs. old, as you guessed). Recently, I had a memory defect which forced me to have the mainboard replaced (RAM is soldered to the main board with MBA's).

Since I got it back, the MBA is somewhat slow. It is extremely slow if I download large files via the ethernet/USB connection. Both cores of the CPU are loaded at at least 50%, the MBA practically does not take mouse commands any longer and opening windows or such is extremely slow. Basically you can have a few coffees during downloading! Would a reinstallation of the OS perhaps help? (10.7.4 currently) I also wonder if I would reinstall the OS from, e.g., the recovery partition, now would this delete all the programs I've installed (quite a few)?  I should like to add that the above described behaviour occurs wih the MBA NOT running dozens of programs, just the  little file transfer, nothing else.

MacBook Pro :: New Internal Hard Drive Loads - Freezes On Main Screen

Sep 7, 2010

I bought a new internal hard drive for my late 2009 MBP and have completely cloned my existing hard drive to the new one. When I use the new hard drive through an enclosure I am able to boot from this hard drive perfectly, but when I install it into my MBP it won't read properly or something. It loads to my home screen with my dock, but when I try to click something, it just freezes up and I have to restart to the same thing every time. Anyone have any ideas on how this can be fixed?

MacBook :: Formatting External Hard Drives / Format Main Or Sub-drive?

Apr 8, 2010

got a real basic question to ask and you're gonna think im an idiot for asking...I just bought a 320gb western digital elements hard drive and want to reformat it so that its compatible for both mac and pc's. i intend to format it as NTFS-3G as it would allow me to use it on the 2 platforms without having the 4GB file size restriction that fat32 has, anyway.....

when I go to reformat my external hard drive in disk utility, I see my external hard drive to the left, and there's a "sub" hard drive as a child of the external hd listed uppermost. just wandering which one of the two do i select before going to Erase>Windows NT filesystem (NTFS-3G)>erase? Do I select the uppermost drive and erase that or the lower one? or both

OS X :: Main HD Icon Won't Change

Jul 23, 2009

I seem to have a glitch preventing me from changing my internal HD icon. I have no troubles changing icons for folders or external drives, but since recently getting myself a new internal, it just stays on the default. I even tried using CandyBar (was doing the other changing by hand) but that thinks the icon I want is already applied, although it doesn't display in Finder or anything like that. Reapplying or trying to use a different icon doesn't work either. (And the icon works fine when I apply it to other things, just not drive I want it to work on.) Does any one know how to fix this? The horrible drive icon is bugging me; I'm used to the pretty one that matches my other drives.

(I should probably add, I can change the default internal drive icon using CandyBar, but this isn't what I want since that changes both my HD icon and my Windows partition icon and I want them to be different and since Windows is NTFS, this seems like the easiest way to change it's icon. I'm open to suggestions which involve a different method of changing the windows partition icon.)

OS X :: Reformatting The Main Partition?

Jul 21, 2010

I've got a Mac Pro (early 2008 edition) and I installed Windows 7 via boot camp. I no longer use the OSX on the main partition because I boot OSX on this computer from an external drive.

I would like to format the main partition (where my old OSX is) so I can use it for file storage from both OSX and Windows, but I'm afraid I might screw up the boot capabilities by doing so. Can anyone confirm that my Windows 7 boot camp partition will still boot successfully after formatting my old OSX partition to FAT32 (or whatever makes the most sense)?

Hardware :: 32" LCD TV As Main Monitor?

Nov 15, 2009

Thinking about using a 1920x1080 LCD TV as my main monitor for my MBP via a cheap HDMI adaptor. Who here has tried this? Success? Sharp image? Blurry image? Problems?

Would like to use a TV rather than computer monitor because the larger pixels when compared to a 32" computer monitor (would make text and icons about 30% larger compared to a computer monitor). Also, the TV would double as an "external monitor" via an Matrox MXO 2 Mini for use when color grading video.

OS X :: How To Partition Main Hard Drive

Feb 14, 2010

I would like to partition my main hard drive so I can install another operating system on the other one and then use either, whenever I wish.

I would prefer to do this from my external drive (Time Capsule) but I dont think the Time Capsule allows for partitions.

In Disk Utility, it shows that I have a 931.5 GB Hitachi Main Disk. Underneath that, indented, it reads Macintosh HD.

When I click on the Hitachi Disk line, it shows me the partition tab.

I can figure out how to partition it - which is to simply add and name a partition and click apply. But I would like to know if this process will erase any data from my hard drive. If it does, then it may not be worth partitioning.
