MacBook Air :: Superdrive: Switching Internal DVD Drive To BluRay?
Dec 14, 2010
As written above, do you think it would be possible to change the DVD Rom within the MBA SD to a Bluray Drive? Speaking of using the case and USB electronics to hook it to an Air or Mac mini Server?
Are there any Bluray Drive Drivers for OS X so far?

I got an idea from wanting to upgrade my iMac hard drive from 1TB to 2TB. So I thought shouldn't the iMac optical drive be upgradable as well? I looked on eBay and there were a few Bluray internal drives for sale like this one [URL:...] The only thing I'm sceptical from buying one is that (1) will the iMac require a driver or will it recognise the drive, and (2) will a standard programme like VLC be able to play BD media? Looks like a good idea to put the iMac's screen to good use. Sorry Apple I'm not going to be downloading HD movies. My internet is not uncapped.

Here's a BluRay drive by Panasonic that I found today that fits the 17" MacBook Pro. Looks nice, fully backwards compatible with SuperDrive, trusted manufacturer, and a halfway decent price.

It's been a bad evening. A friend accidentally tripped over a 1/8th to RCA cable we were running from the MB to the TV. Friend and TV are fine, but the MB no longer switches from "internal speakers" to "headphones" when I plug in a pair of headphones, the 1/8th cable, etc. It stays on speaker mode even when the plug is fully inserted.
I've experimented with a toothpick, and have engaged and disengaged the digital out, but that's not the issue. If I bend a fully inserted headphone plug hard towards the front of the MB (i.e., toward the USB ports), I get full stereo sound, which indicates the jack is still partly working; however, under all other circumstances, sound comes through the speakers, which suggests the MB isn't receiving the "switch" signal properly from the jack.
I've been googling for the last few hours, and it looks like Macbook Wind users have found ways to alter the AppleHda.kext file to allow them to manually toggle between internal speakers and headphones, which means there has to be a way to do this on the native Macbook. Unfortunately, no one seems to have this specific problem (or at least, I haven't found anyone with this issue since I started searching)

I have a 2010 Mac Pro, and plan to remove the internal "SuperDrive" to make more room for SSDs. I would like to put the internal drive that came with the Mac, into a case that allows me to boot the drive when necessary -- the only situation I can really think of is new OS/X updates, because if I honestly calculate how many times I've needed/used a SuperDrive in any of my equipment (MBP, MP) in the last half decade, it averages out to: maybe once a year, if that. In short, for me personally, it's just this relic gathering dust and taking up space in my computer for no reason.

This is not related to the other bluray thread on here. I am looking for a slot loading Blu Ray drive (I do not want write capability) for my iMac Aluminum. I know fastmac sell a Bluray drive for $999, but that has the unnecessary write capability which jacks up the price. So, does anyone know where to get a slot loading BD-ROM for the iMac?

I have a Digistor external BluRay burner to use with MakeMKV to rip BluRays to my Mac. Here's a link to the model info:[URL:...] It has worked fine with my iMac (2.8GHz Core Duo) except that, on occasion, it would fail to eject the disk. When this happened, I simply pulled the USB connection from the back of the drive (I use the dual-USB connection to maintain battery life after the single-USB connection failed to keep the battery charged), reconnected the cable and hit the eject button on the drive. No problems, just a minor effort to work around. However, now that I have upgraded to an i7 2.93GHz iMac, the same procedure as above will crash my Mac. The moment I reconnect the USB cable, the iMac goes black and won't restart. Instant death, no warning. It won't restart with the external drive connected, either after a crash as described, or even after a normal reboot or cold power up. The only way I can use the drive, is to boot the Mac with the USB cables disconnected from the Mac, and then connect the drive to the Mac after bootup. The "old" iMac was fully up-to-date, running Snow Leopard. There is no outward difference in the operating systems of either machine, yet this happens only on the new model.

My sound keeps turning off. When I check the settings, the output device switches randomly between Internal and Digital output. I have no idea where the Digitial Output is coming from and this started about a month again. It switches randomly and then I loose all sound for a few seconds. Sometimes it happens once then stops for a few days, other times it switches back and forth for 5 min. No idea!!!

I have an SSD in place of the usual hard disk my MBP 13" came with to which i placed in the optibay. Since i did this (yesterday) ive noticed how noisy the drive is over just using the SSD alone.
Is there a way to either powerdown the optibay drive or 'eject' it when not in use for silence and prolonged battery life? Would you recommend it? Most of the time i will just use it as a netbook unless i download media to the optibay.

I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

I've just bought a 500GB Western digital scorpio blue HD. I'm going to put it in my mac mini which I don't have yet. I have a macbook at the moment, so want to format the new drive so it's ready to put straight in the mini and use
Is it OK if i put the 500GB HD in the macbook, then boot it from disc and install leopard onto it that way? Or do i need to format the disc in some way before I install leopard?

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 17" computer. I bought a 750gb Hitachi drive in an upgrade kit from OWC. I have formatted it and now using Carbon Copy Cloner am making a copy of the internal 500gb drive. I am not very familiar with Mac OS X drive partitions. When Carbon Copy Cloner copies the 500gb partition from my Pro, will it leave the other 250gb or will I need to use Disk Utility or somethng else to format the remaining space? I would like to put the 750gb in the Pro moving the current 500gb into the external housing if possible.

Can a few folks comment on how long it takes for your screen to light up and to hear the optical drive make noise from the time you push the "On" button? I've seen a few videos and some comments here as well that it is nearly instantaneous and then the MBP goes into its boot cycle. I have an X25 SSD which boots me into my desktop in about 19 seconds from the button push BUT there is about a 5-6 second delay from the time I push the "On" button to any activity. Any ideas how to fix this (if it is, indeed, a problem)? Again, some other folks report instant activity.

I am considering buying an external Dvd Drive they all seem to have a max speed of 8x, as does my macbook pro drive.
I am currently in the process of ripping my dvd collection would I benefit from this? I assume I would save the internal drive a lot of wear and tear this way, but my need is for the increase in speed.

As I posted earlier today, I am considering a Mac Pro as my new HD video editing machine. When you add up the numbers, it looks like the least expensive dual Xeon machine w/ 1600MHz FSB. But being some what new to Mac's (I have been watching Mac's for years and have worked with BSD on and off for years, too), I have questions. One thing is with the standard PC workstation, they come with two 5 1/4 bays, one will be ready for my to install the internal Blue-ray burning needed to burn those HD disks. How is that done on a Mac Pro? Can one get a Blue-ray drive to fit in the second SuperDrive slot? If not, what are the options?

I got a new 1tb WD internal hard drive and I took it out of the box and popped it right into my macbook pro 15". It fits and i am able to easily close the back on the computer. My only problem is that when i start up the computer, it loads for a few minutes, but 100% of the time after about 3-4 minutes i get a notice saying I did not eject the drive safely and all that. After that the internal hard drive is no longer there. I cant see it in my finder, or disk utility. BTW I am booting from my old hard drive externally. What would cause the new internal hard drive to eject itself?
