As written above, do you think it would be possible to change the DVD Rom within the MBA SD to a Bluray Drive? Speaking of using the case and USB electronics to hook it to an Air or Mac mini Server?
Are there any Bluray Drive Drivers for OS X so far?
Is there any news on the macbook pro getting a bluray reader or any other major advancements? Do you think its the time to buy one?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.
Can I connect my MacBook Pro to a BluRay DVD having a wireless bridge via our wifi network to view iPhoto slideshows on our HD TV via the BluRay DVD player?

I know the Mac Pro uses a smaller bezel for their tray loaders, so would regular retail drive work? I know I can remove the bezel, but if I don't have to I won't.I'm looking at the Pioneer 8x burner right now.

Here's a BluRay drive by Panasonic that I found today that fits the 17" MacBook Pro. Looks nice, fully backwards compatible with SuperDrive, trusted manufacturer, and a halfway decent price.

I am having difficulty removing the front bezel on my new 8X LG BD Burner. There seem to be 3 brackets holding onto it. Any ideas on how to get it off?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAre there specific Blu-ray players that you need to get or is it just fine to buy a cheap Blu-ray player and hook it up to the iMac using bootcamp to watch Blu-ray movies? (Sorta run-on sentence there.lol) You certainly don't wanna miss not watching Blu-ray movies on a 27" iMac!

I have add a pc for HTPC for more than 2 years, and I have always been able to play bluray on it... I am thinking of switching to mac to do that... either putting the mac pro close enough to the TV or buying a mac mini to do the job...
I already own a bluray player... thinking of buying an external USB case 5.25" or maybe e-stata and to use it that way to play blurays... (hollywood blurays...)
This is not related to the other bluray thread on here. I am looking for a slot loading Blu Ray drive (I do not want write capability) for my iMac Aluminum. I know fastmac sell a Bluray drive for $999, but that has the unnecessary write capability which jacks up the price. So, does anyone know where to get a slot loading BD-ROM for the iMac?
View 11 Replies View RelatedSo I have been trying to convert my Blu-Rays using a combination of MakeMKV and Handbrake, so I have been able to get the MKV and am able to play them, but once I do the handbrake, and it runs through fine, I get an error when I try to play the m4v file. It says "The document _____ could not be opened. The movie is not in a format the Quicktime Player understands."
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got an idea from wanting to upgrade my iMac hard drive from 1TB to 2TB. So I thought shouldn't the iMac optical drive be upgradable as well? I looked on eBay and there were a few Bluray internal drives for sale like this one [URL:...] The only thing I'm sceptical from buying one is that (1) will the iMac require a driver or will it recognise the drive, and (2) will a standard programme like VLC be able to play BD media? Looks like a good idea to put the iMac's screen to good use. Sorry Apple I'm not going to be downloading HD movies. My internet is not uncapped.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Digistor external BluRay burner to use with MakeMKV to rip BluRays to my Mac. Here's a link to the model info:[URL:...] It has worked fine with my iMac (2.8GHz Core Duo) except that, on occasion, it would fail to eject the disk. When this happened, I simply pulled the USB connection from the back of the drive (I use the dual-USB connection to maintain battery life after the single-USB connection failed to keep the battery charged), reconnected the cable and hit the eject button on the drive. No problems, just a minor effort to work around. However, now that I have upgraded to an i7 2.93GHz iMac, the same procedure as above will crash my Mac. The moment I reconnect the USB cable, the iMac goes black and won't restart. Instant death, no warning. It won't restart with the external drive connected, either after a crash as described, or even after a normal reboot or cold power up. The only way I can use the drive, is to boot the Mac with the USB cables disconnected from the Mac, and then connect the drive to the Mac after bootup. The "old" iMac was fully up-to-date, running Snow Leopard. There is no outward difference in the operating systems of either machine, yet this happens only on the new model.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've done searches here on this topic, and it seems like everyone gave in and picked up the Superdrive.
I've made a partition using bootcamp assistant, and I have an .iso of the legal disk. I used to install a VMware image, but I plan to replace it with the bootcamp image once I get that done; haven't even activated windows.
I have installed rEFIt; have the .iso and the files copied from the iso into the BOOTCAMP partition; but when it tries to boot to there, it complains about not being a system disk, or some such. One poster noted having two entries in rEFIt, and the useful one had something about a boot/cdboot.efi option, but I don't see that option in rEFIt anywhere.
Has anyone else made progress on this?
Also, it'd be great if one of these things could be made sticky, given the hassle it seems to be, and the several threads that have cropped up with questions, and not much in the way of answers.
i know that the superdrive cannot be connected to the mini Via USB, which is a pain, but what if i were to buy the superdrive, take it apart and hook it up to my mini, replacing the Combo Drive already in there, Would that work i'm as assuming that it would all be compatible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNot as impossible as everyone says, and no hardware modding needed. Note this is currently any PC, not any Mac - it works on my MacBook Pro in Boot camp, but I haven't tried doing this in OS X yet. I will do tonight if I have time. Here's instructions anyway: [URL]

Currently using a modded leather square CD storage thingie, but it's a bit thick, kind of defeats the purpose. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fixed USB cable which gets snagged.
Strange that the usual suspects (Tucano etc.) haven't made a custom case for this peripheral.
I am having trouble getting any DVDs to burn on my 2.2GHz SR MBP. I have tried using Toast as well as the Finder and I keep getting an error message. I have tried restarting the computer and trying a different brand of DVD. The drive can read DVDs just fine but I can't seem to burn anything successfully. This happened several months ago but went away when I retried burning the disk.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSorry if this is a redundant question but how do you boot off a MBA superdrive.. does the disc show up on the desktop and you just choose to install it? I don't get what is happening internally on an Air.
I've never tried booting off USB before, in all my years on Mac, including the time I tried, but failed to boot off USB on a 1998 iMac G3 with no firewire.
MBA's have some superior USB power, right?
