As written above, do you think it would be possible to change the DVD Rom within the MBA SD to a Bluray Drive? Speaking of using the case and USB electronics to hook it to an Air or Mac mini Server?
Are there any Bluray Drive Drivers for OS X so far?

I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?
Internal HDD --> External HDD
Place internal HDD into optibay, and place SSD into the harddisk slot
Connect External HDD via USB to MBP
CarbonCopy to new SSD via USB from External HDD
Format Internal HDD
Will this work?

It's been a bad evening. A friend accidentally tripped over a 1/8th to RCA cable we were running from the MB to the TV. Friend and TV are fine, but the MB no longer switches from "internal speakers" to "headphones" when I plug in a pair of headphones, the 1/8th cable, etc. It stays on speaker mode even when the plug is fully inserted.
I've experimented with a toothpick, and have engaged and disengaged the digital out, but that's not the issue. If I bend a fully inserted headphone plug hard towards the front of the MB (i.e., toward the USB ports), I get full stereo sound, which indicates the jack is still partly working; however, under all other circumstances, sound comes through the speakers, which suggests the MB isn't receiving the "switch" signal properly from the jack.
I've been googling for the last few hours, and it looks like Macbook Wind users have found ways to alter the AppleHda.kext file to allow them to manually toggle between internal speakers and headphones, which means there has to be a way to do this on the native Macbook. Unfortunately, no one seems to have this specific problem (or at least, I haven't found anyone with this issue since I started searching)

My sound keeps turning off. When I check the settings, the output device switches randomly between Internal and Digital output. I have no idea where the Digitial Output is coming from and this started about a month again. It switches randomly and then I loose all sound for a few seconds. Sometimes it happens once then stops for a few days, other times it switches back and forth for 5 min. No idea!!!

I just plugged in my Cinema Display to my MBP for the first time, and for a while couldn't figure out why the heck the computer wasn't recognizing it (though maybe I'd gotten a bad MDP/DVI adaptor).
Then I'd noticed I'd set it via gfxCardStatus to use Intel graphics only. I released it to Dynamic -- and voila! Display recognized. Interestingly, it now also will not accept being set back to Intel only with the monitor connected.

A few months ago I bought the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive adapter. I was going to purchase my first laptop and knew there would be drives I could take from my G4. This was my first real experience with USB 2.0 and boy do I hate it. I do mostly video editing and I very regularly transfer huge amounts of data from drive to drive. USB 2.0 waaaaay too slow compared to what I was used to. Hours to transfer 40Gbs. I now regret not getting a FireWire enclosure. How does everyone feel about those HDD docks that take SATA drives? To me it seems very economical. I understand a smaller bus powered drive would be good for travel because a dock or larger drive needs a power source.

I currently have a 1.5TB external hard drive ive been using with my PC, (approx 90% full) which i believe is in NTFS format.
I have heard rumours i may have to re-format this to Fat32 in order for it to function correctly with my Mac.
Is this correct? can anyone shed some light on the situation?

How I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, If this is really good using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive?
In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb.

Anyone care to advise?
Would love to hear any past experiences and direct comparisons etc
Have written off the Momentus XT due to endless reviews of noise, heat and battery zapping. Is this just the way all 7200 internals are likely to perform though?
If so, should I maybe continue using my 5400 internal for apps and os, and buy a FW800 7200rpm for my media?
Oh, I'm using my MBP mainly for video editing (FCP, Motion, Shake) and some audio and graphics too.

I am currently in the market for a new hard drive for my MBP to upgrade and one to use for Time Machine. I was thinking somewhere between 500GB to 1TB of data for both the MBP and external. I tried the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB in my 2009 13" MBP but it was too loud and clicked so I returned it. I now have the 2010 13" MBP and was wondering what other hard drives are out there?

I'm getting message right now saying "selected device has no output controls", not allowing me to switch. I rebooted with the interface already turned on. I've run into theis before- can't figure out what causes this to happen. Sometimes it's OK. ?

With my iMac, I have Swan M10 external speakers that I love. I also like to use headphones sometimes.
My currrent solution for switching from speakers to headphones (or vice versa) involves physically turning the computer, disconnecting one input in the headphone jack, and putting in the other one.

I have a quick question that maybe you guys can help me with. I used to store all my music on an external drive, but now that I got a Mac I decided to just save them on the internal drive. When I select the External drive and Copy the files to transfer somewhere along the lines it gives me an error and pretty much the transfer Stalls(the transfer window stays open but nothing is being moved) and it wont close or nothing unless I restart. I really don't know what file is corrupt or anything, Is there a software I can get to make this process easier? I am trying to transfer over 100gb of music Via USB.

I think it will work, but if it won't, it would be superb if someone more knowledgeable than I could tell me so
Step 1:
Buy 2.5" external Firewire 800 hard drive enclosure
Buy 2.5" SATA drive (probably 500gb WD Black or something)
Step 2:
Whack new drive into new enclosure and fire it up
Step 3:
Clone my existing 250GB internal MBP hard drive to the new one in the enclosure using Carbon Copy Cloner etc
Step 4:
Remove new hard drive from enclosure and use it to replace the internal hard drive in my Mac
Step 5:
All being well stick the old hard drive in the enclosure and use it as an external

I started this situation with a bootable hard drive that I removed from a 4,1 (mid 2008) and a brand new unibody MacBook Pro. What I wanted to do was use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new MBP. I used CCC to clone the drive to the new one and repaired permissions on the internal drive and tried booting from it. No Luck. I figured this was stupid to do and I could just use migration assistant so I decided to reinstall Leopard on the unibody. Unfortunately when I attempt to boot from the DVD it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I also tried holding down option to open the boot manager and select the DVD, when hit enter over the DVD it freezes. The interesting thing is that when I connect the old drive to the unibody using an enclosure I can boot from the external drive no problem. I tried using another computer to install leopard on the unibody over firewire and the installation went fine but when I start the unibody it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I am also positive the hard drive isn't damaged or anything because when I go to the boot manager after leopard is installed the internal drive shows up but when I select it, it freezes. I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, repairing the disk (which is successful). When I try to boot into single user mode the computer freezes when loading the text. Another interesting thing is that when do boot from the external drive it goes through verbose mode every time and I never choose to do that. Right now I am attempting to clone drive using Super Duper to new drive and see what happens.

Well, I'm a new owner of a MacBook Pro 13" and the Hard Drive is only 160GB I believe which is plenty of space for what I use it for but I would much rather have my Music/Movies/Pictures and all media separate from that space. I was just thinking of getting a portable External Hard Drive for all of my media but then I could also upgrade my 160GB drive to let's say a 500GB Drive and do away without an External drive. What would you do? Upgrade your existing internal HD or get an External HD?
The MacBook Pro usually just stays on the desk anyways so an External HD wouldn't be any inconvenience to me but if I wanted to just unplug it and go will that harm anything? Also, there is plenty of External Hard Drives available right now and I was wondering if any were better than others? I just want something basic, portable, and works with a mac. No firewire needed, USB is fine with me. I was really looking at the My Passport from WD and was wondering if the non Mac Ready versions work with a Mac anyways? [URL]

My internal HD failed. I have a recent Super Duper bootable Clone connected with FW800. The option key at startup doesn't allow me to access the clone drive. I press the start key, wait for the "bong," hold down the option key and nothing happens - just whiring, some crunchy sounds and a solid blue screen. I was able to reset the PRAM using the command-opt-P-R keys and got the 2nd "bong", but that hasn't helped the problem. It's a 2008-9? MBP running 10.6.? I've order a replacement internal drive. I was hoping to be able to boot to the clone and work in the meantime.

I then dropped in 16gigs of ram and now I am going to ddrop in a 750GB Seagate Momentus XT 2.5" 7200RPM / Solid State Hybrid SATA (Serial-ATA) Drive, This is one fast HD. Now I have one fast little ol mac with 16gigs ram as opposed to the recommended 8, a hybrid HD with a 8 gig ssd and my question is "how do I convert the internal HD that I am taking out, to be a great little external hd", what is the best either firewire 800 or usb 3 external case that I can place it in?

here we are with SnowLeopard 10.6.x and it still has no automatic shutting off laptop screen (Macbook Pro) when hooking up external monitor????Why do i have to close the lid, let my laptop go to sleep, wake it up, re-enter password, have my internet shut down and re-activate and all other processes just to shut down my MBP screen when hooked up to my cinema display???Hell even Windows Vista/ 7 does it automatically when i tested it via Bootcamp, requiring no closing of the lid or halting any processes or the internet.

I have seen people all over the internet saying that their MBP monitor would not turn on, but I have not seen my situation before. I used the computer a week ago (it's a work machine and I'm a part time intern) and both the external and internal monitor worked. I shut it down and when I came back the computer booted up to the external monitor but gave no video on the internal.
I shut down, removed the external monitor (connected by DVI cable) and rebooted. Nothing came up but when I connected the external again it worked fine. This had happened before, but when I shut down and rebooted without the cable connected it came back on immediately. I'm just hoping its not a bad graphics card or something that needs to go in for warranty.
