MacBook Air :: "Battery Time Remaining" Going Crazy?
Feb 14, 2009
I have a Rev A 1.6/80.
Just running on battery, the estimated time remaining is normal. About 4:00 with a 97% charge.
But when I have it plugged in, it goes really low. About 20-14 minutes. I know I have an almost full charge and the battery isn't shot or anything because I just used it for about 3 hours yesterday without plugging in. Even with the innacurate estimate it still reports the % correctly.
The iStat widget reports similar numbers, but not exactly the same. 16 on it, as opposed to 13 in the menu bar.

I am new (sort of) to owning a Mac, I bought my macbook pro a couple days ago, so far I havent used it much for other than surfing the net. My question is regarding the Battery time remaining indicator, first of all it changes alot, so i never truly know how much time I have left. Is this normal? It can say anywhere from 3-6 hours left when I am at 90% battery. Usually at 90% battery it says I have about 4.5 - 5 hour left. I thought I was supposed to get up to ten hours of battery? The percent indicator seems to go down fairly fast like 1% every few minutes. Is this Normal? Should I take my macbook over to the apple store to be checked out?

The battery indicator on the top menu bar on my other MBP's gives 3 selectable options for display: Icon Only, Percentage, and Time Remaining. My new MBP retina only has 'Icon' and 'Percentage'. You can still see time remaining by clicking on the battery icon manually.
Applecare said "they must have removed it for that new version of the MBP, you could always try reinstalling the O/S from scratch just to be sure".
Under Energy Saver the only option is to 'show battery status' on the top bar.

The remaining battery indicator (top right) is not completely accurate. The measurement (time) constantly varies.
As far as I know a 13" MacBook Pro should have 10 hours battery time. In this case the reading constantly changes from about 8:52 hours then back to 9:12 hours, 9:34, and other readings, etc.
Is this normal?

I've just got myself a nice new Mac Pro and am really surprised to find that it is more different to Windows than I was expecting. I feel like a toddler trying to learn a new language to do all the things I am used to doing on Windows.
Quite often I just Google my Q's....or search on YouTube, and usually get the answers quickly.
I can't seem to find a specific answer for this Q though.....
On Windows, whenever you downloaded something, you were given a % telling you how much had been downloaded and how much was left still. It also gave you the progress in gb / kb.Surely there must be a way of having this info show whenever I download something ? I really do not want to go to the App Store and start buying things.

Just got my new macbook pro 13 and have gone through messes with some of the system preferences and am downloaing some stuff. I dunno whether if is affecting it but my estimated battery life says 2 hours and is around 90% now. I did fully charge it and have some other stuff on the background so. Also, I've read that people have it charged for maximum battery life so. If you can charge it, do it or if its around 60% or something it should be charged?

So im a new mac user and had a question about battery life. i did all the things apple says to insure a longer life such as calibration of the battery, using it at half brightness, turning off blue tooth, half volume etc. but i notice that when i plug out my charger it will estimate time remaining as 8 hours or so but like 2 minute later it will go down to 6 hours and fluctuate between 5-8 throughout the time using it. what gives?

calibrating my battery for the first time this morning. i just opened my macbook pro to see that the time left icon jumps every minute. it goes from 8:50 to 12:38 to 6:54 to 11:37 to 7:40! and now it went from 8:45 to 9:19! the percentage remaining is consistent and correct but the time left is way out of whack! sorry for the slang! now it went from 9:19 to 9:11 then 8:47. i have the screen at the lowest brightness, no backlit keyboard, nothing else running except firefox. i wasnt aware that i was supposed to calibrate my battery and its been about 3 months since i bought this. now its at 8:37 now 8:18. this is quite

I've noticed (actually the past few months, but it never really annoyed me until recently), that my left fan will spin really fast and very loud a few times during the day at random moments. Sometimes I will leave my computer for a few minutes, and it won't be doing anything difficult (just finder, or something not cpu intensive), and it will be blowing like crazy when I come back. These "episodes" last for a few minutes and then return to normal. Activity monitor shows that my cpu is barely being used, so nothing is taxing the system. Weirdly enough, when this happens, istat says the fan is at 0 RPM, yet it is very loud. I cleaned out my fans with a little keyboard vacuum to make sure there was not dust stuck in their, but it still makes those fan noises occasionally. I even did the Apple hardware test, and nothing showed up. I have a late 08 MBP.

Every few minutes the fan on my Macbook Pro will get from 4000-6000rpm. It gets really noisy and pretty warm. Turning it on/off has little effect and it seems to just crop up, even if i have nothing too crazy going on, example, just now its going crazy but only google chrome (4tabs) and microsoft word are open. The laptop is but 2 months old and this problem only came up a week ago.

I just bought a new macbook pro a little over a month ago and have since upgraded to Snow Leopard (fresh install). One day about a week ago, out of no where, the mail application seemed to launch itself whenever I opened my laptop (resume from hibernate?). It is asking me for my name and email address to start setting it up. From there, I press cancel and the window disappears but the icon stays on the dock like its open and when I go to the Force Quit window it shows Mail as not responding and I have to force quit it. This doesnt happen every time but happens pretty often for seemingly no reason.

I recently got a new iMac, its been fine, but just today I have opened Numbers and some crazy colours, like a graphics problem have flickered up onto the screen but go away pretty quick, after I have clicked on a few things and stuff.
They tend to be red, yellow and green colours from what i have seen. It has only happened since I opened Numbers, and its all up to date. (Version 1.0.3.) It also flickered up a little on iTunes while Numbers was open, where its has the time bar and song name and stuff.

At work im working on a Mac Pro 2x 2.8ghz quad core xeon.. when it comes out of sleep the mouse acts fine for about 5 secounds.. and then starts darting all over the place and then freezes in one area. I can stick click but not move the mouse. This is what i have tried so far.
1. disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse.
2. Looked in console for any weird mouse errors.
3. put it back to sleep and woke it back up.
4. restarted.
5. changed the energy saver options.
6. looked around mouse and keyboard cp for options.
7. tried another mouse.
8. tried using a mouse pad.
this is what has worked, but only works for about 5 secounds before it goes crazy again and then stops moving. force quit the finder. if i restart it, its fine till i put it to sleep and then it all starts over again. the system is fully patched to 10.5.6 with all the efi updates from apple update.

What's the best thing to do with the MBA out of the box? Should I use it and drain the battery to zero or not even turn it on and just charge it?
I want to treat it nicely from day one ...
Also, on the same topic of treating it nicely, do you recommend a screen or keyboard protector? I had a keyboard protector on my PowerBook G4 (iskin). While it kept the keyboard nice and clean, I suppose it didn't give me the best experience I could have had with the keyboard itself. I now realize that I can't really read the keys because the protector is so dirty.

I routinely put my Macbook to sleep with a full-charge at night, then unplug it (the power cord doesn't reach where I keep my computer at night). When I wake it up, it generally has 93% of a charge left. This has never happened and I am wondering if it is time to replace the battery.

I am totally new to macbook. After being a very supportive Windows user I finally decided to change that and get the Macbook pro 13". I was trying out the battery and wondering there a bit. I charged it fully and when I started running the mac on battery the remaining time showed around 10 hours, then it would start jumping, suddenly it went to 9:30 and further down. The lowest within half an hour use was 4:30 and right now it's up at 8:50 again. I was wondering whether this kind of "jumping" is normal or whether just my macbook is doing that? I am really happy with my decision so far, I love the macbook and I am sure while trying it out in the next week or so I will come up here with some more questions!

The battery time on my Macbook Pro 15" goes from one time to another in a matter of minutes. I fully charged the battery after it had been drained. This is what I mean by fluctuating:
11:23am-11:28am (5m)
7h51m, 5h54m, 6h57m, 6h16m, 5h29m, 6h38m, 5h53m, 6h29m, 6h9m, 6h13m
11:29-11:34 (5m)
6h39m, 6h36m, 6h4m, 6h8m, 6h49m, 5h52m, 6h30m, 6h0m, 5h43m, 6h30m
Apple states that it should get 8-9 hours on a full charge and mine gets 6h15m. It's only 10mos old.

I've been meaning to calibrate my computer for some time now, but it seems like a wee hassle. I ask you this: must I calibrate my battery? Will it in any way affect my battery life during one cycle? What about the overall life of the battery in terms of number of cycles?
