MacBook Air :: 11" MBA Doesn't Support The 64 Bit Kernel?
Nov 13, 2010
I was just playing around with my 11" MBA and found it doesn't seem to support the 64-bit OS X kernel. I tried holding the 6 and 4 keys at bootup then running 'uname -a' in the terminal and it reports I'm still running the 32-bit kernel. I also tried running "sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64" and it reported that the architecture had successfully been changed, but on rebooting I found I was still running the 32 bit kernel.

It looks like OS X supports TRIM, but still says that my SSD doesn't support it. How stupid is that?

Finally took the plunge tonight and installed Windows 7 on a partition on my new Retina MBP. Everything's beautiful, runs fine... after playing around in native 2880x1800 for a while, I decided to see how this gorgeous screen would look at exactly 1/2 its native resolution. Open display properties... screen resolution... There is no option in either the windows native resolution pane or the nVidia Control Center to switch resolution to exactly 1440x900. Closest is 1600x900, which of course is the wrong aspect ratio.Â
I kept running games in OS X at 1440x900 and it would render all interpolated and blurry, and I thought that was simply Apple's funky scaling for the Retina display... but something's seriously wrong if I can't run a 2880x1800 screen at 1440x900. Of course, I can always define a custom resolution, but I'm scared to do that... I have no idea why 1440x900 isn't an option and I don't want to experiment on my brand new $2,200 toy.Â

I thought that I would just point out that when I went to watch the iPod touch Guided Tour on Apple's website, this showed up:I would also like to point out that I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I didn't install Quicktime 7, meaning that Apple's own website doesn't support the newest version on Quicktime.

Every musician that owns an iPad uses it for their sheet music. Why won't apple officially support sheet music on iTunes? Every sheet music app on the ipad is terrible and apple stands to make a lot of money, seeing as how I would buy all of my sheet music from them if they did it right. This seems like it's right up their alley too, with the strong support of the arts on their devices.

My attempts to install Mac OSX 10.6 on iMac MC309 bring always the same result - kernel pamick. What I did was:1. insert DVD Snow Leopard Install Disk, reboot and press ''C' - kernel panick;2. reboot into Recovery Mode, open Disk Utility, erase  the preinstalled Lion completely, format the disk as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Then try to reboot  into DVD  Mac OSX 10.6 install disk: kernel panick.3. In Disk Utility go to restore tab, use DVD install disk as source and use my disk as destination, hit restore. When trying to reboot kernel panick happens.

On trying to load my iPhoto library into PhotoSweeper through the media browser, I am receiving this error message:Â
"140418_iPhoto Library_full" could not be read because its version is not supported. PhotoSweeper supports iPhoto 7.x (iLife '08), 8.x(iLife '09) and 9.x (iLife '11), but your library is of version 3.5.1. Â
I ran Photosweeper without any issue less than a week ago but have since found/loaded some more duplicates so wanted to run it again. How can I overcome this error?Â

Yes you read that right. Your brand spanking new MBP will use a 32-bit kernel as default.
You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.
So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.
I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.
There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.

When I click on the HP Designjet System Maintenance Utility icon on my desktop for my HPDesignjet 120 I get the message
" The HP Designjet System Maintenance Utility installed on your desktop does not have support for HP designjet printers installed ."
The printer is working and but needs colour calibration , printhead cleaning etc, which I believe can only be accessed through the sytem maintenance utility.
I have asked the question on other forums but have had no success . I am assuming that as this printer is now discontinued from the HP range people may not now be familiar with it .
I am aware that all the necessary drivers etc are integral with Mac OSX 10.5 but when I started having problems I downloaded drivers from the net and I fear I may have added to the problem
Could anyone help in getting me access to the maintenance utility function?
I am on an intel Mac -OSX 10.5.8 , 2.8GHz Intel core Duo
The HP driver version is showing as 3.3.3

Since updating Safari recently to 5.1.5, if I choose the Mail Link to This Page command, instead of opening Mail.app with a new email with the link pasted in, it launches Google Chrome and, in Chrome, goes to the email login page for Google webmail. If I choose the Mail Contents of This Page command, I get an error message stating: "Safari can't create an email message because Google Chrome.app doesn't support sending webpages from Safari. You can use the Mail application included with Mac OS X to send webpages." Safari is set as my default browser. This behavior started immediately after the 5.1.5 update.I use these commands pretty regularly and, through many version of mail.app and Safari, there has never been a glitch. Any ideas, folks? Or is this a bug introduced by 5.1.5 or some other recent Software Update? (Software updates are completely up to date and on 10.7.3.)

For the past few days (never happened before) my apps started crashing continuously and kernel panic screen started appearing very frequently. I am still wondering what may be the cause of it, then I tested my RAM with Rember, and this log showed up:

I have had the Macbook air 11.6 for five weeks now and it has been rock solid except for a couple of kernel panics. Once when I first got it I got a kernel panic in Safari. I only use google browser now. I got a kernel panic two days ago. I went to open the lid and it did not come on. I found out there was a kernel panic. I am afraid if I take it to the genius bar they will have me reinstall the OS and add one app back at a time to see what is causing it but since they are so infrequent this is obviously not convenient. Also I have had my IMac 24 for three years and have tons more junk on it and have never got one panic.

I did a quick search through the forum and didn't see anything specific about this problem. It just started to occur yesterday and nothing has changed on the computer. (Nothing new installed and no external hardware plugged in.)
Basically, it just pops up with the grey screen advising to restart. Sometimes it occurs after waking from sleep, sometimes it occurs after starting up, and sometimes it occurs in the middle of a task. I haven't noticed a specific pattern.
I ran the AHT and everything passed. I also ran Rember and the memory seemed fine in the test. I reset the PRAM and VRAM and the SMC after speaking with Apple. Finally, I reinstalled the OSX clean on the machine and the panics are still occurring.
This is the last panic report from the Macbook 1,1 2.0 with 1.25 GB RAM. I'm hoping it is the RAM and not something with the logic board, but am not sure if that can be ascertained without finding replacement RAM first.

I am currently planning to upgrade my 2gb RAM and I heard that my model supports up to 6GB of RAM, hence I am planning to upgrade to that size cause Aperture uses lots of memory and I use Aperture a lot. I am planning to get it from here: OWC 6GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz DIMM Upgrade Kit. Everything is cool and all until I find out that some users are having kernel panics on OSX 10.6 with 6GB RAM (which is what I am using). It is now 10.6.3, so anyone care to report if it is safe to use 6GB or the problem still exist?
