My MacBook Pro just gave out the other day. When I turn it on, the optical drive spins and the light sensor adjusts the power light's brightness, but nothing else happens.Â

So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun) was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night. Â
The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs. Â

I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1.33GHz that up until now ran flawlessly. Today I was watching a movie on it with some friends when it randomly shutdown. Since then, it no longer turns on. The battery is fully charged and there is no problem with my AC adapter. With just the battery, nothing happens when I press the power button. When the AC adapter is plugged in and I press the power button, the optical drive spins at full speed for a few minutes and then the PowerBook shuts itself down again. I have attempted reseting pram and pmu with no success. I think it could be a dead logic board but I'm not sure. Would it be worth the money to buy a new logic board or should I just part it out?

On my one account (the main one) Safari works fine but on the other account just today it started loading real slow. then once it finally pops up with the home apple screen and you click anything, the wheel spins and spins for like 3 min then safari quits unexpectedly. When i click to report to apple and then send it, again the wheel spins for a long time and then it says it was unable to send to apple please check internet connection and try again. But, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection because if i switch to my other account internet works just fine!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased Snow Leopard to upgrade my early Intel MacBook Pro. When I put the disk in the disk didn't mount so I attempted to get it to eject. I wasn't able to get it to eject so I followed some of the trouble shooting. I'm thinking my optical drive isn't working properly because I haven't used it in a while but now when I try to boot the computer it hangs when it try's to read the optical drive. I tried forcing it to eject using the mouse button as well as trying to force a hard drive boot by holding the "d" key. At this point is there anything I can do short of opening it up and pulling out the disk myself?

I just installed a new optical drive in my MacBook pro (2007 model, I think), I followed step-by-step instructions, and it all seemed to go fine.
However, now my mac won't boot at all!Â
I switch it on, hear the optical drive make a noise, then it just stops and doesnt boot. The white led is slightly lit, but very, very dimly. Â

I bought a second hand Mac Book Pro A1150 model. It did not have an optical drive so I bought one, installed it and now my Mac Book will not boot up. When I take the drive out the Mac Book boots up fine. I was told that the optical drive although used was tested and work when it was shipped out. Is it common for a possible defective optical drive to casue a Mac Book pr to not boot up or does this sound like an issue with the optical drive cable, or possibly the logic board?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally went from Leopard to Snow Leopard (SL) by doing a clean install. But I found I was not able to boot from the install disk by the normal procedure -- restarting and pressing the Option or C keys. Before the SL install, I had a volume structure problem on my HD and tried to use the Leopard install DVD to repair the drive. I was unable to do that by using the normal boot up procedure.why I can't boot from the optiical drive by pressing the designated keyboard key(s)?

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

I'm debating getting a 2010 mac pro (probably 3.2 quad) to upgrade from my 1,1 mac pro. I'd like a SSD for apps, and to boot from. But I'd also like the four bays to raid for larger capacity. I have tons of photos, and nearly a 2GB iTunes library.
I have a problem: when I restart my Early 2008 MacBook Pro there is no "chime" and the screen remains black. The keyboard doesn't light up or respond to any input, and worse still, the "lid button" light on the front of the notebook remains illuminated, it doesn't blink, it just stays on, shining in my face. I loaded a CD into the optical drive to see if I could use the keyboard to eject it, but this test failed. Now, when I turn on my MBP, I hear the optical drive spinning and the quiet whirr of the fan inside.
I looked on Apple's support website about what to do when a Mac refuses to boot. I tried all of the methods they listed, but since my Mac doesn't respond to keyboard input, all of the techniques failed. Having exhausted everything I could think of, I decided to post here hoping someone could suggest something. I was just on the verge of completing my portfolio website and I would like to salvage my data at least.

I have the first gen aluminum iMac and I think my optical drive is pretty much dead. It makes this horrible scratching noise whenever I put a disc in and it'll try to read for half a minute before spitting it back out. Sometimes it even freezes the computer. Anyway, I'm just planning on getting an external USB DVD burner. Does anyone know if I can boot off the USB DVD drive?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor several weeks, my black MacBook (2008) has been acting odd. Certain applications won't open, and when I attempt to open them, the computer makes a quiet clicking noise, like the drive is failing. Last week, when trying to boot it, the thing just wouldn't. Stuck on the grey Apple logo screen. Assuming a hard drive problem or failure, I ran the tests. I ran Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install disk, checked & repaired permissions, checked & repaired disk. All okay. I ran the Apple Hardware Test from the install disk that came with the computer, using the test that runs for an hour or so, and all appears to be fine. The computer won't boot into safe mode. I've tried flashing the PRAM. I doubt I could achieve much through target disk mode, as I've already run Disk Utility. What's left to do? Something doesn't add up here.

If I get 5.1 speakers and use the optical-out port on the Mac, are there drivers for Windows that will support the optical out and let me do 5.1 as well? I'm curious as I intend to do some gaming on the box, and this greatly influences the speakers I would buy (2.1 vs 5.1)
I would like to be able to boot to a ghost 2003 (dos environment basically) to be able to clone NTFS disks without having to go to a pc, but for some reason on the mac pro I can only boot into Windows PE environments or Linux environments boot disks. The ghost 2003 bootable cd just hangs and never loads.

I have tried to restart with option key, but only the two arrow keys displays. No hardrive icon displaying. I have tried to re-install with original disk os 10.3.5 but device keeps on spitting out the dvd's( I also have tried Tiger OS 10.4 and Leppard 10.5same issue) . I notice also that the fan runs loud after a few minutes. I checked the Hard drive via another device and found it unallocated. I reformatted and re-installed. No go after rebootinng.

I recently got this Mac Pro (Model number A1186, EMC 2113) with two Quad Core 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon 5150 processors, 16GB of RAM (both RAM riser slots completely filled with 4x2GB sticks of 667MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM each), 2x1TB clean HDDs, and an ATI Radeon HD4870 (512MB DDR5 memory) video card with 2 DVI ports and an S-video port. (I bought the HD4870 later after I found that the one that came with it, an ATI X1900 XT, was part of a recall [sadly this recall ended in 2011.] Plus, the fans on the X1900 were revving up REALLY loud.)The reason I'm posting here is because the darn thing will not "boot." The machine starts up fine (HDDs spin up, lights on the RAM risers illuminate momentarily, etc.), but there is no output out of either of the DVI ports. Not even a gray Apple screen. I have tried the DVI cord and the monitor on two different machines and they both work perfectly fine, and now I have no other Mac available to test the video card on. I'll just have to assume for now that it works. The video card, after the machine is turned on, has three of the four diagnostic LEDs lighted.
The ones that light up are D1601, D1602, and D1603; the other one, D603, does not light up. After some searching around on Google for a little while and sifting through forum after forum, they all seemed to agree upon the fact that these lights were from the two internal power cables (D1602 and D1603) not being plugged in and that there was a critical temperature error (D1601). Note that a) both power cables are in both power slots and hooked in securely and b) these lights turn on immediately after pressing the power button. A light tug from both ends on both cables assures that these cables are not going anywhere soon, and I doubt that there would be such a heating issue as soon as I press the power button, especially since all the fans are running fine. My first thought was that maybe the logic board wasn't getting enough power, but I have no idea on how to check this as almost everything besides the RAM risers and the extension slots are covered by something.Another problem I found is that some of the diagnostic LEDs that should be lighting up, aren't. Out of all the lights, the ones that do light up are the TRICKLE light and the EFI light. I guess it's good that the CPU lights aren't lighting up, but what about the the GPU and POWER lights? Shouldn't those be lighting up too?I also tried booting up from a Snow Leopard disc (there isn't any internal CD/DVD drive [the previous owner removed it for whatever reason], so I've been using an external CD/DVD drive).
When I plugged in my Apple USB keyboard, I decided to press the caps lock key and see if it would light up green. No dice. I tried all 5 USB ports on the machine and none of them worked. But how did the CD/DVD drive work? It spun up when I turned the machine on. So since the keyboard can't be recognized I am unable to boot from a CD, or anything else for that matter.One more issue: there is no startup chime! Tried turning it off and on many different times trying some potential solutions out and not once was there a startup chime. I know for sure this is a huge issue.reconfiguring the RAM (which I inserted per Apple's instructions), resetting the SMC, resetting the PRAM (which wouldn't have worked anyways since the keyboard isn't recognized), and resetting the NVRAM (which, again, probably wouldn't have worked since the keyboard isn't recognized.)So here are my problems.

I purchased and installed the Commell MPX-3132 in place of my Airport Card. Installation was very easy and the RAID drivers work perfectly. I cloned my HD to my SSD using CCC and everything shows up fine via ESATA and USB. When I try to boot from it via ESATA it is not recognized, but it boots perfectly from USB. I Booted to it via USB and installed the RAID drivers onto the SSD then tried to boot via ESATA again with no luck. The SSD I bought is the Corsair Force 120 and the enclosure is a Hornettek usb/esata [URL:...] I haven't had a chance to test another enclosure.

I have a MBP from 2008 I upgraded to Lion about a month ago and had some minor issues right away, but now I can't get past the boot screen without a kernel panic. I did a time machine restore to one of my external drives and it boots up fine. I figured my internal drive was going bad so I installed a new one yesterday and the exact same Kernel Panic happens. I don't live in a city with an apple store so that isn't an option for me. I am contemplating going all the way back to leopard because the was the last os I can remember that was completely stable for me.

Why does the internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro spin up at seemingly random times? The activity monitor shows high data rates to and from the drive.

I took my macbook out of an outer case to clean the shell itself.
I used wet ones which have alcohol so I wasn't worried, but also wasn't careless.
I once got a screen that said I needed to restart my computer. So I did.
I'm use toast to put an image file on a DVD, but when I put the DVD in, it just spins around for a bout 8 seconds and then ejects without even acknowledging it anything on the screen. Very annoying. Here's what the disc burning says in "about this mac": HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

I just tried to play a legit DVD and it won't play. It accepts the DVD, spins for a bit then spits it back out. I've tried several ones. All legitimate dvd's (not burnt ones) and none of them work. I've played DVD's on here before.

-If I insert a music CD, the CD drive spins it and makes noise. It does not open iTunes or even show it on the desktop. It is not recognized. Then the computer ejects the disc.
-My iDVD software seems to have taken a crap. I am prompted every time the computer boots up that iDVD has quit unexpectedly and gives the options of "relaunch" "cancel" or "report to Apple".
-This is the weird part: I was going to reinstall Leopard OSX from the disc. The computer reads the discs and the "X" screen pops up. I then try to go through to reinstall the software as it tells me that it will restart.
It restarts and then ejects the disc when the Apple logo pops up. Therefore I cannot reinstall the software. Does this sound like a software or hardware problem? Can the fact that iDVD is not working mean that my CD's would not play? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do here? I am desperate and would like to know what other approach I should take before I put a new drive in.

I am trying to repair a macbook pro for a friend, I think it's the logic board, but I wanted to check with you all before I go buy one. When the battery is fully charged, I press the power button, I hear the hard drive spin for about 5 seconds then stop. The superdrive on it is broken so I can't try the restore disk. I ordered Pram, I am going to replace that. I tried two different hard drives and I know they are both good, I tried them in the macbook and through a usb port, and the same thing happened both times.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest update 10.7.4. After the nice progress bar finished, I just get a nice Apple logo and a spinning wheel of death. Rebooting gives me a new progress bar and a new spinning wheel of death. OPTION-start does not really help, since there is no DVD drive on the MacBook Air Core2 to reboot from.Â
