Mac Pro :: Why Can't 2008 Boot To Ghost 2003 Cd

Feb 3, 2009

I would like to be able to boot to a ghost 2003 (dos environment basically) to be able to clone NTFS disks without having to go to a pc, but for some reason on the mac pro I can only boot into Windows PE environments or Linux environments boot disks. The ghost 2003 bootable cd just hangs and never loads.

Mac Pro :: Server 2003 On 2008 Via Bootcamp

Mar 11, 2008

I've searched high and low and can't find any reports of running Server 2003 on a 2008 Mac Pro via Bootcamp, 32-bit or 64-bit. Has anyone done it? I found a few instances of people having trouble getting it running on MacBook Pros and other systems. I also found an article on a workaround to do it on a MacBook: [URL] Even the 32-bit version of Server 2003 can handle 32GB of RAM via PAE and I have several licenses for it.

Mac Pro :: 2006-early 2008 Will Not Boot

Jun 1, 2012

I recently got this Mac Pro (Model number A1186, EMC 2113) with two Quad Core 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon 5150 processors, 16GB of RAM (both RAM riser slots completely filled with 4x2GB sticks of 667MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM each), 2x1TB clean HDDs, and an ATI Radeon HD4870 (512MB DDR5 memory) video card with 2 DVI ports and an S-video port. (I bought the HD4870 later after I found that the one that came with it, an ATI X1900 XT, was part of a recall [sadly this recall ended in 2011.] Plus, the fans on the X1900 were revving up REALLY loud.)The reason I'm posting here is because the darn thing will not "boot." The machine starts up fine (HDDs spin up, lights on the RAM risers illuminate momentarily, etc.), but there is no output out of either of the DVI ports. Not even a gray Apple screen. I have tried the DVI cord and the monitor on two different machines and they both work perfectly fine, and now I have no other Mac available to test the video card on. I'll just have to assume for now that it works. The video card, after the machine is turned on, has three of the four diagnostic LEDs lighted.

The ones that light up are D1601, D1602, and D1603; the other one, D603, does not light up. After some searching around on Google for a little while and sifting through forum after forum, they all seemed to agree upon the fact that these lights were from the two internal power cables (D1602 and D1603) not being plugged in and that there was a critical temperature error (D1601). Note that a) both power cables are in both power slots and hooked in securely and b) these lights turn on immediately after pressing the power button. A light tug from both ends on both cables assures that these cables are not going anywhere soon, and I doubt that there would be such a heating issue as soon as I press the power button, especially since all the fans are running fine. My first thought was that maybe the logic board wasn't getting enough power, but I have no idea on how to check this as almost everything besides the RAM risers and the extension slots are covered by something.Another problem I found is that some of the diagnostic LEDs that should be lighting up, aren't. Out of all the lights, the ones that do light up are the TRICKLE light and the EFI light. I guess it's good that the CPU lights aren't lighting up, but what about the the GPU and POWER lights? Shouldn't those be lighting up too?I also tried booting up from a Snow Leopard disc (there isn't any internal CD/DVD drive [the previous owner removed it for whatever reason], so I've been using an external CD/DVD drive).

When I plugged in my Apple USB keyboard, I decided to press the caps lock key and see if it would light up green. No dice. I tried all 5 USB ports on the machine and none of them worked. But how did the CD/DVD drive work? It spun up when I turned the machine on. So since the keyboard can't be recognized I am unable to boot from a CD, or anything else for that matter. One more issue: there is no startup chime! Tried turning it off and on many different times trying some potential solutions out and not once was there a startup chime. I know for sure this is a huge issue.reconfiguring the RAM (which I inserted per Apple's instructions), resetting the SMC, resetting the PRAM (which wouldn't have worked anyways since the keyboard isn't recognized), and resetting the NVRAM (which, again, probably wouldn't have worked since the keyboard isn't recognized.)So here are my problems.

IMac :: 2008 24inch - ESATA SSD Boot

I purchased and installed the Commell MPX-3132 in place of my Airport Card. Installation was very easy and the RAID drivers work perfectly. I cloned my HD to my SSD using CCC and everything shows up fine via ESATA and USB. When I try to boot from it via ESATA it is not recognized, but it boots perfectly from USB. I Booted to it via USB and installed the RAID drivers onto the SSD then tried to boot via ESATA again with no luck. The SSD I bought is the Corsair Force 120 and the enclosure is a Hornettek usb/esata [URL:...] I haven't had a chance to test another enclosure.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Early 2008 MBP Won't Boot From Internal Disk

Feb 16, 2012

This is my first post here I hope somone can help me.  I have a MBP from 2008 I upgraded to Lion about a month ago and had some minor issues right away, but now I can't get past the boot screen without a kernel panic.  I did a time machine restore to one of my external drives and it boots up fine.  I figured my internal drive was going bad so I installed a new one yesterday and the exact same Kernel Panic happens.  I don't live in a city with an apple store so that isn't an option for me.  I am contemplating going all the way back to leopard because the was the last os I can remember that was completely stable for me.

OS X :: Early 2008 MacBook Pro Won't Boot The Screen Remains Black?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a problem: when I restart my Early 2008 MacBook Pro there is no "chime" and the screen remains black. The keyboard doesn't light up or respond to any input, and worse still, the "lid button" light on the front of the notebook remains illuminated, it doesn't blink, it just stays on, shining in my face. I loaded a CD into the optical drive to see if I could use the keyboard to eject it, but this test failed. Now, when I turn on my MBP, I hear the optical drive spinning and the quiet whirr of the fan inside.

I looked on Apple's support website about what to do when a Mac refuses to boot. I tried all of the methods they listed, but since my Mac doesn't respond to keyboard input, all of the techniques failed. Having exhausted everything I could think of, I decided to post here hoping someone could suggest something. I was just on the verge of completing my portfolio website and I would like to salvage my data at least.

OS X :: Ghost App And Not Sleeping?

Feb 10, 2009

Lately, I have something popping up in my Dock for a very short amount of time. I can't see what icon it is because it's already gone. I know it's there, because space is being made for in the Dock.

Is there any way to find out in some log what this could be?

Also, mac os x does not want to stay asleep. I put it to sleep before turning in myself and every morning the screen is fully lit.

I am always concerned about unauthorised access by third parties.

MacBook :: (2008) Won't Boot / Work - Stuck On Gray Apple Logo Screen

Jul 25, 2010

For several weeks, my black MacBook (2008) has been acting odd. Certain applications won't open, and when I attempt to open them, the computer makes a quiet clicking noise, like the drive is failing. Last week, when trying to boot it, the thing just wouldn't. Stuck on the grey Apple logo screen. Assuming a hard drive problem or failure, I ran the tests. I ran Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install disk, checked & repaired permissions, checked & repaired disk. All okay. I ran the Apple Hardware Test from the install disk that came with the computer, using the test that runs for an hour or so, and all appears to be fine. The computer won't boot into safe mode. I've tried flashing the PRAM. I doubt I could achieve much through target disk mode, as I've already run Disk Utility. What's left to do? Something doesn't add up here.

MacBook Pro :: GPU Gave Up Ghost?

Jul 29, 2010

So This morning I booted up my MBP 15" and was just about to open an email when the screen become completely pixelated and unusable. I bought the computer in Jan 2007, and it's been my primary machine since then. I took it into the shop here and the service guy said the computer wasn't worth fixing. 3.5 years old and not worth fixing? Is it really not worth fixing, or is this guy trying to make a sale? Could this have been caused by using an external monitor for most of the time I had it? I usually plugged it into my 24" Samsung and used the laptop display as the secondary monitor.

OS X :: How Do I Delete A Ghost Login Account

i am the administrator account for my macbook pro, osx leopard. when a roommate moved out, i wanted to delete his standard login account. however, instead of figuring out how to do it the proper way, i accessed the devices/macintosh HD/users/ folder in Finder and simply deleted it. now, when the login screen appears, there are three options: my admin account, a guest account, and an account with no picture entitled "Other...". I can't log into this account, and it doesn't appear in the System Preferences/Accounts screen, so i can't delete or adjust it from there.

has anyone run into this problem before?? it's not a huge nuisance but it's a bit annoying to see it every time i want to log in.

MacBook Pro :: Ghost Mark On Screen

Feb 28, 2010

For sometime now i have got this ghost mark on my macbook pro's screen. I did book an appointment at apple and showed someone at the genus bar but at the time he said it was just due to the keyboard pressing against the screen and if i cleaned it well it would go away. In saying this i had to buy this cleaning kit which he said would do the job. At the time in the apple store it did seem to fade but i now feel that was just due to the stores lighting. I still have the mark months later and its still as obvious as it was before. I was wondering if you guys have any advise on how to get rid. I only see it when its dark and there is black on the screen and though it doesnt bother me that much in a few weeks im selling this and would prefer to have the problem fixed. i did do some research and didnt find much, only thing i did find was about replacing the screen and i cannot do that due to time and money and am sure there is a easier way. i have attached a photo trying to show the ghost mark (in the black box) but because i took it on my iphone it doesnt show well.

Desktops :: Mac G5 Bood Disk Is Giving Up The Ghost

I can't even boot the machine with it hooked up -- I was able to start up with the install DVD once the boot disk disconnected, and it sees the secondary internal (non-boot) and external backup (FireWire) drives okay, through Disk Utilities. I have a ton of important files and programs on the boot drive that I'd like to retrieve if possible. I'm presently installing OSX on the secondary drive so I can at least have a hard disk to boot from.

Again, I can't start up with the damaged drive hooked up.

Software :: Time Machine Backing Up Ghost Data

Jul 24, 2008

Okay, maybe this is an isolated problem. I feel like I should be able to solve it, but so far I haven't been able to. Surely if it was widespread it would be talked about all over the Internet, but my searches aren't turning up anything. All right, let's cut to the chase:

Time Machine, ever since I got 10.5 (to the best of my knowledge) has been backing up 1.6GB of unknown data at least once a day, but on no discernibly regular schedule. This is unrelated to the fact that I change data on my drive all the time, and this gets backed up exactly as you would expect. The 1.6GB is on top of whatever routine stuff needs backing up. It simply seems to once in a while find 1.6GB of data that was changed, and whumph, there goes another 1.6GB on the RAID I back up on. It may be a big drive, but it will run out of space at some point, and way way way sooner than it should be running out of space as long as this continues. I am completely fed up with this problem and would have long since moved back to a previous backup scheme if that scheme allowed me to restore past iterations of files and un-delete data, which it did not. And let's face it, Time Machine is so darn cool that you want it to work even when it doesn't.

I checked the obvious large files that reside in the background while you work: Photoshop scratch disk (it's set to use the RAID right now, so it's obviously not the culprit), Parallels HDD image (I thought so at one time, but now I'm using my Boot Camp partition with Parallels, and not even booting into that partition for weeks at a time, and it still finds the 1.6GB changed almost every day or so)... I don't have any large media on the internal HD (that's what the RAID is for, if it doesn't run out of space because of Time Machine!), so I can't think of what else to look for. I saw that Time Machine keeps backup logs, but they don't list what files were backed up :-(

I realize a problem like this might be particularly hard to diagnose without being at the computer, but any ideas at all would really be appreciated.

It's also not Final Cut Express, which is set to use the RAID as the scratch disk. However, I have been in Final Cut an awful lot today, and I have seen a few or several 1.6GB backups today as well, which is unprecedented. It's rarely more than two a day. But all that's been different today is leaving FCE open, nothing else I can think of. But the 1.6GB backups occur even on days that FCE was never open.

ITunes For Mac :: How To Stop Access To Ghost NAS When Accessing Missing Tracks

Dec 11, 2014

The NAS containing my iTunes media crashed. I have been able to recover about two-thirds of the tracks directly from the original disks. Luckily the iTunes library file is still intact, so I know what is still missing.

There were about 10000 more tracks to recover :-(  I am currently ripping them all back in. However, I have the problem that when I click on a track which is missing from the media, iTunes spends an interminable time (about a minute) trying something (the rotating beachball spins) before reporting that it cannot access the IP address of my dead NAS. I now have a new NAS with a different IP address. As far as I know, I have deleted all references to the old NAS (in Finder, using Remove from Connect to Server...). iTunes is using the new NAS for storing its media data.

How is it that iTunes keeps referring to the old IP address? What must I do to make it stop doing this?

Install Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 as usual (comes as 2 discs, but only requires the second disk upon your first successful log in so this isn't a problem with bootcamp). OS X :: OSX Windows Server 2003 Workstation

Sep 6, 2009

I've tried typing some search terms for what I think I want to be able to do, but I'm getting nothing relevant- I figured I'd just spell out my problem on the forums and see if there are any solutions. I work for an EMS organization that has several windows workstations (running xp) that connect to a larger server, which hosts our shared drive ("U") as well as windows specific programs for generating reports. Specifically, one of our call logs is a microsoft access database that is linked via our network to generate a specific reference number for our calls.

Now, I'm moving up in the world and going to be directing human resources and pr for the agency, and while the windows workstations are nice, I am a damn fine mac user and would love to use my unibody 17" pro for the job. Here is where my questions come in. I'd like to use my mac running virtualbox, parallels, or whatever with an xp install to connect to the server and have a typical workstation desktop (the U drive, network attached programs) next to my osx desktop. I know macs can access shared drives on server 2003, but can I set up a virtual machine to emulate one of our workstations?
