MacBook :: 2 Calendars Display On Desktop Using Geektool Script?
Nov 23, 2009
I was wondering if it is possible to display 2 different calendars (Gregorian and Islamic) on the desktop using a geektool script. I have tried asking in the Geektool thread in the picture gallery forum and no one has answered.

I've been learning and customizing Geektool over the weekend and I'm stumped on how to get it to display a to-do list that refreshes for free.
I've read many different websites on how to do this and I'm stumped. I don't really understand code, don't use iCal, and have no idea how to read my terminal info.
I'd like to use Geektool b/c of the customization it offers, but I'd also like to be able to use something where I can simply view my to-do list and it refreshes automatically. The thing is I need something that's free.
These are the sites that I've visited, but I get confused when they start talking about ~users and where to place files and editing documents. I've looked here:

I have a question for anyone out there who is into customizing their desktop. This is my current desktop setup (for my second display) created with Geektool. I'm pretty happy with it but being as anal as I am I want the AM/PM lights to be lit properly.
I can create two desktop wallpapers but OSX wallpaper settings aren't detailed enough to change the image every 12 hours. The only other thing I could think of was to create a 24 hour video, 12 hours of AM followed by 12 of PM. Then use Mach Desktop to play the video.
Though this is crazy overkill and would unnecessarily use a ton of resources. Any ideas would be awesome!
Running OSX 10.6 on a MBP and using Geektool 3.0.

I have two geektool scripts written in to the app, but it wont display.
Any chance someone could look and let me know what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure its something stupid.
The second I exit this screen, everything goes away and nothing displays.

I downloaded GeekTool 2.1.2 and was fiddling around with some of the settings so I could customize my desktop/dock. Unfortunately, this black box in the upper-left hand corner somehow appeared and now won't go away. I then uninstalled and am now running GeekTool 3.0. The problem persists. Is there a way I can get rid of this box, yet keep the changes I've already made in my dock?

I'm using Lynx to display the temperature in Geektool, but for some reason "inthe" is added to it. I'm using the code:
lynx -dump http://printer.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=44221|awk '/Temperature /{printf $2, ": "; for (i=3; i<=3; i++) printf $i " " }'
And this one causes the same thing,
lynx -dump http://printer.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=44221|awk '/Temp/{printf $2, ": "; for (i=3; i<=3; i++) printf $i " " }'

I have the latest model of macbook pro 15" (entry-level one) and since a few minutes ago the screen has gone mad. It seems it has gone to lower resolution and the desktop doesn't fit on the screen anymore. I have to drag the mouse to the edges of the screen to see the parts that are hidden. I tried SMC reset, PRAM reset and it didn't fixed it.

I'm thinking about getting a MacBook in the future and I want to extend my desktop to my 19 inch 4:3 Dell display at 1280 x 1024. Would this work with the macbook display at 1280 x 800?

I got my MBA about 2 weeks ago, and in 3 different occasions some windows and parts of the desktop would show display artifacts. I am attaching snapshots. I didn't recognize any specific pattern that could cause this, and the CPU was not overheating when the fact happened. Every time it was sufficient to reboot the system, and the problem disappeared. I am worried it might be a hardware issue, maybe related to the integrated graphics. Should I have the MBA replaced?

I love my MacBook Pro -it's used all the time in schools, without hassle.
However, when I try to connect to a Sony VPL ES1 data projector, the screen resizes (normal and OK) but the data projector shows a completely different desktop image and I can't see a cursor.
Presume this is a bug, but is there a work-around I'm missing?

I select my desktop picture, and it puts it as it. But once I shut my computer off and turn it back on, it's back to the Lion desktop picture. But when I go into the system preferences, it says that my picture is the one that I selected before.

Somehow when I purchased my MacBook Pro, when it synced with my iPhone and a pre-existing Outlook account I have at work, I ended up with two or three versions of my Contacts and my Calendars. Is there an easy way to consolidate all of them into one?Â

Geektool is pretty cool, but it would be nice if I could tell how many messages I have in Gmail.
Unfortunately the only ways to do this either re too confusing or don't work.

I am new to MAC os. It's pretty awesome, except the character limitation on the desktop annoys me and I am scared I'll delete a file by mistake one of these days.
Anyways to increase the number of characters on the desktop?

I'm looking to modify the cal command that I've seen used for calendars in GeekTool to create a horizontal calendar.
I don't care about days of the week so much, I just think it would be interesting to have all of the days of the week listed out in order at the bottom of my screen, with the current one marked.
So, I need two things:
I need to strip out of the cal command the days of the week at the top (or repeat them the appropriate number of times, but I imagine that will be far more difficult) and the line breaks at the end of each week. This is the most important part.
Secondly, I'd like to find a way to add bars (like this: |) on either side of the current date without replacing the numbers as most of the calendars I've seen have done it.
Here's the code I've seen:
Code:
cal | sed "s/^/ /;s/$/ /;s/ $(date +%e) / $(date +%e | sed 's/././g') /"
If I can just modify that to get what I want, that's fine, if I have to use something completely different, that's fine. I just would love to have a horizontal calendar.

Seeing as GeekTool is old and inefficient, I am considering creating a new tool that is less of a burden on system resources.
I want to know what features you would like to see in a new version of the tool. I'm thinking native support for basic stuff such as getting the date and time without having to run a shell command.

I have iCloud, and it doesn't seem to be doing a thing. My calendars, which used to sync under MobileMe, now don't sync anymore. In fact, they don't even sync through iTunes when I PHYSICALLY PLUG the phone into the Macbook. Calendars are set up to sync. I have selected ALL calendars to sync (even though I wish I could just get rid of the different calendars and have just one. What a pain! Just because I wanted to write in different colors on my calendar depending on the type of event, iCal has to complicate everything and treat these as separate calendars???) The settings on my iPhone are also set to sync all calendars. I've gone into the iCloud settings; everything is on and enabled. The OS on the iPhone is the most current. iTunes is up to date. My OS on my Macbook is the latest (Lion OS 10.7.4).

I recently received a copy of the latest build of Snow Leopard (10A354 i believe). Now when i upgraded the first time GeekTool was working fine. Then i was working on changing the MenuBar to black and the whole system just crashed on me. I had to do a complete reinstall of regular Leopard and then upgrade again to Snow Leopard. Last night was rough. Sooo im not going to try that again for a little while.
