OS X :: How To Use Gmail In Geektool
Mar 15, 2009Geektool is pretty cool, but it would be nice if I could tell how many messages I have in Gmail.
Unfortunately the only ways to do this either re too confusing or don't work.

I remember how most of Macrumors is opposed to that but i'm a noob at geektool and have already searched.
I already have geektook, 2.1.2 I believe, installed on my MBP. I want my desktop to look like this: [URL]
I'm trying to think of a way to mimic Gmail functionality without actually using a Google/ Gmail account. My work email account is an imap account which I would like to use on my Macbook, and also my iPad. The ideal situation would be for all of my folders, inbox, and sent emails to sync as if I were working on the same device. In other words, I would like to write an email from my iPad only to come back to my office and find a copy on my laptop. Is this possible? Is it merely a matter of adding the imap account to my iPad?
I currently have the account set up on my Macbook and iPhone. The iPhone functionality isn't great. Emails which I send from my iPhone do not appear in my sent emails on my Macbook. I'm looking to remedy this.
Info:
Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5)
Is there somewhere that has a step by step on using Geektool? I downloaded Geektool3 and was able to cut and paste a date script from another thread. It got on the desktop ok, but I want to delete it and start from scratch.. New to Mac and have been reading daily for hours to get up to speed but this one has stumped me...
View 3 Replies View Related I'm looking to modify the cal command that I've seen used for calendars in GeekTool to create a horizontal calendar.
I don't care about days of the week so much, I just think it would be interesting to have all of the days of the week listed out in order at the bottom of my screen, with the current one marked.
So, I need two things:
I need to strip out of the cal command the days of the week at the top (or repeat them the appropriate number of times, but I imagine that will be far more difficult) and the line breaks at the end of each week. This is the most important part.
Secondly, I'd like to find a way to add bars (like this: |) on either side of the current date without replacing the numbers as most of the calendars I've seen have done it.
Here's the code I've seen:
Code:
cal | sed "s/^/ /;s/$/ /;s/ $(date +%e) / $(date +%e | sed 's/././g') /"
If I can just modify that to get what I want, that's fine, if I have to use something completely different, that's fine. I just would love to have a horizontal calendar.
While diagnosing another problem, I removed GeekTool from my Login Items.
I now want to put GeekTool back into my Login Items, but I can't find any way to do it?!?! It's a PrefPane item, but there's no option to select.
Seeing as GeekTool is old and inefficient, I am considering creating a new tool that is less of a burden on system resources.
I want to know what features you would like to see in a new version of the tool. I'm thinking native support for basic stuff such as getting the date and time without having to run a shell command.
In Leopard Console I like to see: Log Database Queries/All Messages.
the path for GeekTool menu to display All Messages. Is this considered a shell or a file.
I have two geektool scripts written in to the app, but it wont display.
Any chance someone could look and let me know what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure its something stupid.
The second I exit this screen, everything goes away and nothing displays.
Does anyone know if GeekTool (or any other similar tools) can be used to bring up an analog clock on the desktop? Especially with a custom-designed clockface?
View 1 Replies View Relatedjust found Geektool and it's great. It's so useful, however i found that i cannot use Camouflage with it. Is there other way to do it? Or perhaps is there a way to double click the destop to open a finder window? Either are good solutions for me.
View 1 Replies View Relatedim trying to display "Monday | November 15" and I have "date +%A" to display the weekday, "date +%B" to display the month, and "date +%d" to display the date number.. but somethin like "date +%A | date +%B date +%d" doesnt work.. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been learning and customizing Geektool over the weekend and I'm stumped on how to get it to display a to-do list that refreshes for free.
I've read many different websites on how to do this and I'm stumped. I don't really understand code, don't use iCal, and have no idea how to read my terminal info.
I'd like to use Geektool b/c of the customization it offers, but I'd also like to be able to use something where I can simply view my to-do list and it refreshes automatically. The thing is I need something that's free.
These are the sites that I've visited, but I get confused when they start talking about ~users and where to place files and editing documents. I've looked here:

I recently received a copy of the latest build of Snow Leopard (10A354 i believe). Now when i upgraded the first time GeekTool was working fine. Then i was working on changing the MenuBar to black and the whole system just crashed on me. I had to do a complete reinstall of regular Leopard and then upgrade again to Snow Leopard. Last night was rough. Sooo im not going to try that again for a little while.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have GeekTool 3 and weather is not working. I am trying to get the current conditions, temperature and a picture of the conditions, but it is not working.
Can someone give me the code and tell me what information to fill in?
I am new to GeekTool and am trying to get a handle on what the components of the scripts mean.
Does anyone know of a scripting diagram that shows what the different parts of the scripts do?
I have a question for anyone out there who is into customizing their desktop. This is my current desktop setup (for my second display) created with Geektool. I'm pretty happy with it but being as anal as I am I want the AM/PM lights to be lit properly.
I can create two desktop wallpapers but OSX wallpaper settings aren't detailed enough to change the image every 12 hours. The only other thing I could think of was to create a 24 hour video, 12 hours of AM followed by 12 of PM. Then use Mach Desktop to play the video.
Though this is crazy overkill and would unnecessarily use a ton of resources. Any ideas would be awesome!
Running OSX 10.6 on a MBP and using Geektool 3.0.
Got my new MBP and would like to migrate my geektool settings over (many hours spent creating different desktops!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a Geektool script that will just display the battery percentage. Its mostly just for show and to slightly clean up my menubar, so its not that big of a deal.
I'm also looking for a way to make the menubar completely transparent, not translucent, so the menus and menubar items are just there sitting on the desktop.
This is for Snow Leopard.
I just got a new macbook pro 13" for my birthday and I was wondering how would I achieve something like this: This is something I just quickly edited in photoshop to show what I would like. I know that I have to use geektool. But I am completely lost. If there any good tutorials you can send me a link to or even if you could teach that would be awesome. To be clear I would like to learn how to add weather icon, weather info, date, time and a cool transparent bar. I would also like to know how to change the font.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it is possible to display 2 different calendars (Gregorian and Islamic) on the desktop using a geektool script. I have tried asking in the Geektool thread in the picture gallery forum and no one has answered.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded GeekTool 2.1.2 and was fiddling around with some of the settings so I could customize my desktop/dock. Unfortunately, this black box in the upper-left hand corner somehow appeared and now won't go away. I then uninstalled and am now running GeekTool 3.0. The problem persists. Is there a way I can get rid of this box, yet keep the changes I've already made in my dock?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI bought a MacBook Pro for a month ago. Generally I'm very happy with my new device, but I'm not really satisfying with the way I'm using my GMail right now. First of all, I do really like the GMail Offline feature since it speeds up the work with my inbox. Sadly it's not implemented for either Chrome or Firefox for Mac. Right now I'm using the Fluid to gives me a separate App for my GMail. But again, the Offline feature is not available. Since I further like to get a Growl-notification when receiving an email, I have installed Google Notifier. How are you people using your GMail / Google Apps on your Mac? I prefer the online webmail instead of using IMAP.

Gmail is useless when it comes to support.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've exhausted the best part of my brain looking for a way to continue using my venerable Apple iBook, OS X,10.3.9, Mail 1.3.9, all of which I still revere. It works fine for me, I'm mostly an email kind of guy who works off his lap while gmail labors in the background. When things were harmonious, Mail and gmail worked well together. For the past 10 days, Mail has neither sent nor received a single piece of mail. (Happily, I'm not totally dead, gmail has been solid as a rock. To remedy Mail's failure, I need Google's configuration instructions to start looking for errors in my settings. I'm an inveterate tweaker, and I'm sure I tweaked something when I should have baked a cake.
Well meaning friends have repeatedly referred me to Google's web site where the elusive "configuration instructions" for Mail.app can be found and I must repeatedly tell them that the instructions at the web site are for Mail 3.0 and up. Remember, I need the settings for Mail 1.3.9! I should state now, I have no interest in IMAP, I use POP exclusively. Be there someone.
So I have gmail set up on MBP 13". For some reason it keeps loading my sent items and storing them in a folder called "Recovered Messages" and it is constantly reloading this folder with items that were sent back from Oct 29th specifically one item that I keep trying to move to the trash, but it keeps trying to move it back to the recovered folder? This is screwing everything up and is not allowing any messages to be brought into the inbox, I may have screwed something up because now I can not get any new messages and am not alerted to new messages with the postage stamp icon!
So is there a way to start over from scratch? Basically just wipe out the gmail account and re-setup what I have? I can login to it using Safari and everything is fine, but that just seems like a waste when I could one-click the postage stamp and have instant access to my email. I have searched and searched and could not find anything specifically for this problem and even tried gmails website to no avail.
