Mar 7, 2012
I want to put my DVD movie collection on an external hard drive, can I leave it plugged in to my Mini and still access it through my wireless home network so I can watch on my tv?

After debating the need vs. want of the iMac and Mac Pro, I'm going to follow my brain and go with the iMac (27" i7) since I use it for work, though my work is in the business side of the music industry dealing more with email, spreadsheets and some minor music/photo/video editing (which is easily done for me via Apple`s iLife).
My real question is with the 3 external hard drives I want to buy - G Tech 1TB G Drives. I read about daisy chaining the drives, which sounds like a good idea. But am curious about it. Obviously if I have 3 external HDD's and want to use FW800 on all three of them, with only one FW800 on my computer, daisy chaining solves the problem. But in this set-up, what is the potential downside to this? Is there an upside or other reason(s) people daisy chain their drives, too?
I`ll use the iMac's HDD, of course. But I also need one HDD for work (important files, contracts, etc). One for personal (music, photo, video). And lastly, one as a back-up for the other HDD's.
What would my BEST and also cost effective option be? Buy 3 externals and daisy chain them? Use eSata (what would that entail)? Increased speed would be the only major plus I'm looking for with setting these HDD's up. Just not sure all my options...
But keep in mind I don`t need them to mirror each other. HDD 1 (iMac) has my minor importance stuff. HDD 2 has my work files and business stuff. HDD 3 is personal photos, videos and massive iTunes collection (300gb). And HDD 4 is a back-up of all the others. Raid seems to be not exactly what I need - perhaps overkill on cost, too. What do you think? Also, I know everyone has their taste in externals. I actually had great reliability in Western Digitals MyBook Studios, and My Passbooks. But some people I know had good time with the G Tech`s - aside from them looking cool.

So I have 2 USB Ports on my Mac. I use both of them and I am looking to get a Mic for recording youtube stuff. I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.
I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:
1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)
2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)
or 3. Hook up my External Hard-Drive to the thunderbolt port.
Info:
MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), I have 2 USB (3.0), 2 Thunderbolt

Everytime I try to click on my external hard drive it closes the window. I have two identical WD MyBook 250GB drives. Both are FAT 32 formatted. I can access one of them fine from my Macbook. The other displays its icon, but as soon as I click on it, it opens a window, then closes it again. I can access the drive via a PC. I purchased a replacement hard drive (LaCie mobile disk 500GB) which worked fine until I transferred the data at which point the same thing started happening with the new drive.
I ran a Bit Defender scan on the hard drive and the only thing that turned up was an "Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen" file buried inside Adobe Acrobat. Bit Defender couldn't quarantine or disinfect the file so I deleted the copy of Acrobat but the drive still won't mount. I have a Macbook running OS X 10.4.11 and a 2 Ghz Intel processor.

I'm using a 1.42ghz Macmini running 10.4.11. I've been using a Lacie 500 G firewire external hard drive for over a year to store and retrieve files. I have several movies in the mp4 format stored on the Lacie external hard drive. I recently opened one of the movies in full screen (quicktime). It ran for about 10 minutes before freezing up. I watched the spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes. Unable to force quit Quicktime, I pulled the plug on the Macmini. After restarting the computer, the icon for the Lacie external hard drive no longer appeared on the desktop.
I tried several different things to get the icon back, including: repairing the permissions and shutting down the external drive and unplugging the power supply for several minutes before reconnecting the external drive to the computer. The external drive doesn't show up in either the System Profiler or Disk Utilities.

My external hard drive was accidentally unplugged without ejecting. Now when I plug it in, it read only. I can copy files from it but not to it. Is there a way to reinstate write access without losing my data?

I have a new mac mini and a vista pc on the same network. I want to have my pictures, videos and itunes library on a time capsule so I can access them with my mac and pc. I will not be using time capsule as a backup drive. What I want to know is if I can use an external HD to backup my time capsule content. Would it be better to plug the drive to the capsule with usb or to the mac with fw800? The reason I want a time capsule and not a nas is because time capsule is a router at the same time, which means I save space on my desk and dont have to mess around with different components for my network to work fast.

I have plugged in an external hard drive into my time capsule via the usb input. I have a main router for my network and internet and time capsule is connected to this wirelessly. The external drive doesn't show up as being attached to the time capsule and hence I cannot access any files. What do I need to do to be able to access it?

I had Time Machine making wireless backups from my MacBook to a LaCie hard drive plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station. It's worked great for at least year. The 10.5.8 upgrade seems to have broken it. It's still not an Apple supported configuration.

I have just set up an external hard drive to my wireless router and am now wanting to set up Time Machine to back up to the hard drive. I can see the hard drive in Finder and can even send files to it manually. I just don't see in setting up Time Machine any option to backup to that hard drive.

Lacie and a few other brands used to make external additional hard drives for the old mac mini which were boxed in similar shapes to the mini and allowed them to be stacked. Any idea if any company is doing anything similar now the shape has changed?

I have owned a Mac Mini for three years now (my friends convinced me to try the Apple way and this is my first Mac). The CD/DVD died just three weeks after warranty expired and Apple said (in essence) 'tough crap...you didn't buy AppleCare'.I have functioned without a CD/DVD drive since then, and everything was fine... until a week or two ago. We installed an update in iTunes, and everything started running S...L...O...W... So, we rebooted the computer! Instead of rebooting, it made the "bong!" sound and then a screen with an apple and a spinning wheel runs indefinitely. We let it run all night the first time and it stays on that screen for as long as you let it.

It's with sadness and deep regret that I must put my 9 year old Dual G4 out to pasture.
I picked up a mac mac mini and it will be performing nearly all the same functions as the G4, including file serving and being the Time Machine source.
Question. Today, I have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a FW400 WD hard drive. Time Machine backs up that data to another WD FW 400 hard drive.
Moving to the mini, I'll have to make the external drives USB2. No big deal.
But purely from a set up perspective... Am I better off keeping things as is, keeping the files on an external drive and backup up to an external drive? Or should I put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on the mini hard drive? Just looking for perhaps the best setup, etc.

I recently bought a new Mac mini and Seagate goflex 3TB external hard drive. The computer is awesome but if I have the external hard drive plugged in, it messes with the restart/shutdown. The mac will act like it's powering down and go to the blank white screen but will never turn off and shows the little gray lines that go in that circular motion at the bottom of the screen. If I disconnect the USB from the Mac then it completes its power down. I've tried the suggestions of repairing disks or disk permissions, as well as resetting the PRAM, which have worked sometimes but the the problem reoccurs. I've also tried ejecting the external hard drive before shutting down on the Mac but I'll either get an error message or nothing happens and then the above shutdown issue occurs.
Why does this happen and what can I do so that I can always have the external plugged in and not have to manually unplug it so the Mac can shutdown?

I will be getting a MBP but I will need more storage, hence the external hard drive. I wanted to buy time capsule but I read that it is not possible to partition it. So, would I be better off with an external hard drive(FireWire 800) that I can actually partition or get time capsule which offers the wireless connection. As for the speed I guess the wireless connection with time capsule must be pretty slow?

I am looking to get an external HDD for a modified mac mini. I am thinking of removing the 120gb std hdd in the mini and replacing this with a SSD, coupled with 4GB of RAM to speed things up (will be 2.26ghz). Im guessing the capacity of this will be aroung 60-80 gb and will only be used for the OS.

I have my airport extreme configured properly (I have it joining my main wireless network--i live with roommates, so we have a 'house' wireless network but I wanted a work hard drive available to me wirelessly) and updated, and when I use the airport utility I can see my hard drive and it looks like it's configured right. The first time I set up this whole system, I just plugged in the hard drive and it popped right up on my computer. Then, I went into manual setup on airport utility and decided to change the disc password from "use airport password" to "use disk password".
Since then, while my hard drive still shows up as a shared device, when I click on it, rather than taking me to the hard drive, it just says "connecting..." forever. there is also a little button that says "connect as", but it does nothing when i click it. I've tried every combination resetting, removing passwords, creating accounts, etc, and still I haven't been able to access my drive since that first time. Does anyone know what the problem is? alternatively, does anyone have step-by-step directions for how to get my airport extreme to 'join' my wireless network so that I can see my hard drive and access it wirelessly while still staying connected to my 'house' network? Ideally, I would prefer to just use the airport as the main router, but because of roommates (the cable is in one guy's room, he won't let anyone else in or use a different router--plus, then my hard drive would be in his room) this isn't an option. Another one of my roommates has his setup just like I want mine, but he can't figure out what's going on with it not connecting.

This is in regards to the 2010 mini. I have been reading up on SSD, Hybrids and FW800 with a 7200. What is the easiest AND most effective/cost effective solution? If I went he FW800 route, can I use the same drive as my data storage drive? Will there be enough headroom to run the OS over FW and use the drive to stream movies playing in another room on Apple TV2 simultaneously? Will this give me a performance increase over the internal 5400 if I use the external 7200 for everything over FW800?
That is where my thoughts about the hybrid come into play. I know I can stream the iTunes content over USB2, which I have at the moment for the big drive. I would need to go buy an enclosure with FW800 to run it as a boot drive. I could use that same money and go get a 500GB Hybrid drive and install myself and leave the USB2 as data only. If the install is painless but tedious, I might just do that. If the FW800 route would be robust enough to run the OS and stream data to other devices simultaneously (ie use it as I would the regular internal drive), I might just do that and wait for SSD prices to come tumbling down and do a bigger internal SSD in the future.

Computer: Mac Mini, 2009 or so, 160 GB HD (about 50 available), Yosemite.
Issue: Set up a separate user and trying to import information from a Mac Book that is having issues. Mac Book was backed up to an external HD via Time Machine
Question: Is it possible to use time machine to transfer some of the information (photos, music, files) from the external hard drive to the Mac Mini? Is it possible to extract the information from the hard drive by connecting it to the Mac Mini without using Time Machine?

I just got an iMac running 10.6.1 And I still have a Mac Mini running 10.4.11, which allows me to access several apps running under Classic. I'd like to still access them on the glossy new monitor, with the wireless Magic Mouse. Since the iMac has no monitor input port, how do I hook up a KVM switch? Which brand do you recommend?
