My Open Directory users are subjected to several MCXRedirector rules that "deleteAndCreateSymlink" like follow for folders like Caches or the iPhone Simulator Application Support. The symlinks are effectively created, but the folders don't exist in the /tmp/ folder, thus making the users and myself very sad. Here the only strange things that I find in the console : [code]

Our company has a SL server with Software Update service running. We have all SL Mac's except for one brand new iMac with Lion.Of course, the new iMac cannot get software updates from our server unless I make some changes on the server to accept Lion updates.Â
I'd rather not do that, as with only one Lion-equipped Mac, I don't want to take up the extra space for all the Lion-related updates. So, the question is, how can I reconfigure this one iMac to look to Apple's servers instead of our local server? I've looked and looked in the workgroup manager for where that assignment is, but this computer is not part of any group (user or computer) that might be inheriting the setting.Â
Is there a manual way to reconfigure the iMac to look to Apple's servers? Â

We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.Â
I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.Â

I do have a copy of the the Mac Mini SL Client software but I don't have another Mac to create the USB restore disc in order to load the client on the Mini Server via usb drive. I don't intend to use the Server Software and don't want to 'activate' the license so I can resell it instead. Can I just use the Server to create the bootable restore disc without 'activating' the Server License and locking it to my serial number? Or is there another way to create the restore disc if you don't have access to another Mac to run disc utility?

First, I'm a n00b Mac user but I'm reasonably tech smart and I want to make the jump to OSX. I need a mac for the wife, who will use it in the living room connected to our TV. She does email, light desktop publishing, and a metric ton of movies and music: the iTunes library alone is 300GB. Plus she watches DVDs on it. I was thinking about buying a refurbed mac mini server (It's at a discounted price) but I don't need Snow Leopard Server. I'll add the external superdrive later. How hard would it be to just install regular Snow Leopard instead of Server? Also, in regular Snow Leopard, how would the HDDs show up in OSX? One big 1TB drive or 2 500gb drives?

I've been lurking for a while and on the fence about a new Mac Mini. Since I've given up on a Media Center PC with Blu Ray, I'm back to the Mac Mini. I've got two blu ray players and PS3, so I think we've got that covered! One of the things that I'd really like to have is maximum storage for the Mac Mini, since it will have the video and audio on there. The question is this. Is anyone out there running a Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard installed as a regular desktop machine? How does that work out? Is it worth it? I already have a very nice external Lacie double layer DVD burner, so the optical drive isn't necessary for me. Does the Mini Server with its 1TB of storage make sense? At $849 for a refurb at Apple.com, it seems pretty reasonable. Would love to hear thoughts from this crowd.

My goal is to by a mac mini that will run 24/7 it will be connected to about 5TB's of storage that will have all my personal data on it. My goal is to create an FTP server that will host all these files that I can access remotely and let friends and family access it. I pretty much have it all sorted out I just wanted to check with some people on here. To run it I will be using a program called PureFTPd to manage the server and I can create accounts and manage them all through this application. Does anyone have a better way for me to do this or an alternate application that is better, And also I have connected to my mac book pro remotely using the built in FTP feature and PureFTP so yer, Does anyone else have a better idea for me running a server?

I purchased a top of the line Mac Mini Server and I'd like to install the standard version of Snow Leopard on it. I tried to the following: I inserted my retail snow leopard DVD in my macbook pro and I launched "Remote Install Mac OS X" (in /applications/utilities) and I followed the instructions. Then I booted the mac mini holding the "alt" key down and selected the snow leopard dvd as startup disk. What I see next is the Apple logo with the activity indicator spinning and after several seconds I see a "no entry" sign and nothing more it stays like this forever. Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a Mac mini server?

Does anyone know how to play the (included on the OSX install) Chess app over a local network on two separate machines? When you select a new game, you have the option to play 'Human vs Human', am I missing something here? Is this only an option for a game between two people sitting in front of the same machine?

I am wondering if Print quotas can be enforced on a local machine. I have 300 students with Macbooks and do not want to create accounts on the servers for them. I would like to be able to set job page limits for them on thier machines. Can this be done or do I need the print server on the xserve? I have been trying to get quotas to work on the local machines without any luck so far.Printer.conf shows the quotas I set but they are not enforced. I'm using 10.6.8 with IPP protocol to a networked Konica Minolta Bizhub 350 with IPP enabled. Everything looks to be in place but jobs keep getting printed without any warnings or anything.

I have a Mac pro that I use at home. I want to set it up as a server. Like a hosting server that I can log on to anywhere in the world, not just on my local network. I want to set it up similar to a hosting account through someone like godaddy. Where I can log in using FTP or something else. Do I need to install Mac OS X server? I've tried searching but I keep find local home servers. Anyone got any ideas? I'm guessing the first thing I need is a static IP, where do I get that?

I use an external DNS that includes MX and mail entries and A records that point to a static IP provided by my ISP, stored in my router, that in turn accesses services on my lion server via port forwarding. The DNS service on my lion server was turned on but I turned it off and I'm not sure I've noticed any difference - I've got issues either way. Do I need it for any mail server related reason?

As an administrator (without FileVault protection) on Snow Leopard, I created a standard user account (test user1) with FileVault protection. I just want to get familiar with it before creating real accounts. But as an administrator I can't look at files created by test user1. I get a message that I don't have permission.
Do I need FileVault on for the administrator in order to do this? If not, as an administrator, why can't I see what's on other user is doing? Is there a way as an administrator I can see what's files are downloaded, created, websites visited, etc? I'm aware of creating a user account with Parental controls, but would that give me the ability to see what's in the folder?

I just got a new computer (MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard) and I would like to set up an automatic backup. I haven't trasferred any files in yet (they're all on my external HD), I wanted to see the best way to go about setting up my backup before moving the files in.
1. Backups of the documents, music, pictures is pretty straight forward, just a smart copy kind of thing that automatically looks for what files are new/modified on my computer and updates everything on the external. I'm not sure if I can do this with Automator, or if one of the commercial apps I saw on the app store (DropSync, DirectorySync, etc)Â
2. Movies, however, is a bit more complicated. I have around 600GB of movies/TV shows, and don't have room for them all on my computer hard drive (computer is 750GB, external is 1.5TB). In fact, I would like to keep very few of the tv shows on my computer, only really the last one or two seasons. For example, on my external HD has the folder 'Breaking Bad', and within that is 'Season 1', 'Season 2', 'Season 3' and 'Season 4'. However, on my computer I still have the 'Breaking Bad' folder, but only have the folder 'Season 4' since I don't need seasons 1-3 on my computer. When I add a file to 'Season 4' on my computer, I would like the 'Season 4' folder on the external to be updated when I perform a backup/sync. However, this does not mean that the 'Breaking Bad' folder on my computer will be synced to the one on the external, just this subfolder. Can this be done? I'm assuming I'd have to go through and specify paths for all my folders, but there aren't that many shows so that would be ok to do for each season. Also I don't think I would like to use Time Machine since I would like to be able to let friends/other computers take files off my external. I'm told with Time Machine it's not as simple as browsing the finder.

How can I make flipbooks on my computer? The iPhoto program has a flipbook in the form I want but it is then sent on to Aople who converts it to a soft cover booklet and returns the book. I think Apples's marketing team are missing the boat for not offering flipbooks for sale. The one in iPhoto is very easy to use, and flexible as well. Nothing I have seen on the web is nearly as good. All I want is to make my own flipbook to keep on my own computer.

I frequently have to repartition my drive and reinstall OS X (mainly because I work with multiple OSes that keep changing). In order to simplify the process, I'd like to create a disk image of my system partition that I can simply restore after repartitioning. However, is that even going to work if the new partition (the destination partition) has a different size and is at a different place? What about the boot sector? Will I be able to boot from the restored image?Â

I run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â

my problem is that on a restart of one of my 10.6.8 Servers parts of the Serveradmin configs are gone while some of them persists. The lost configs are everytime the same: VPN (complete) and iChat (a secondary but very important Host-Domain). Of course a can restore them from a backup but that shouldn't the standard procedure after a restart....Â

I am running an open directory/active directory network. Authentication is from the Windows server 2003 active directory. It has worked fine until the last month. Now clients stop authenticating & when I check the AD plugin it says network accounts are not available. I can force the server to unbind, then renew the binding & everything works great. Is there any work around or fix for this other than upgrading the windows server to 2008?Â
