Oct 14, 2010So I purchased a stereo output to composite red/white cables. I then plugged the HDMI and composites cables into the receiver, but the it reads only the HDMI (which should include audio and video), or composite (yellow, red, white). If you have HDMI plugged it, it doesn't read from the composite, and vise-versa. So how exactly can I fix this? Why doesn't Apple have the HDMI contain audio and video (like most things, PS3, 360, consoles)? This is really odd and I cannot really use it as a home theatre system at the moment. I was hoping that it wasn't my receivers fault (2008 fancy Denon receiver, cost a few grand), but if it was to find some kind of converter that takes HDMI and stereo out, and outputs it as HDMI with audio/video.

Sep 6, 2010I'm considering getting the base Mini and using it as a media hub to replace my AppleTV. I've hacked my AppleTV to run Netflix, Boxee, etc., but playback in Firefox can be slow. The only issue is the lack of Blu-Ray in the mini which would mean getting a Blu-Ray drive and cracking the mini open. Seems like a lot of work but it could replace my Sony Blu-Ray DVD player leaving only my Denon receiver, Cable box and Mac Mini.

Apr 20, 2010I'm looking to replace my parent's cable subscription with a mac mini, the Apple TV seems too outdated and restricted. I plan to couple it with OTA broadcasts, but what else can I do? I see things like Boxee and Plex, what are these and how can I best use them? Are there any better software to use? I planned on using Hulu, getting some massive storage and putting seasond and seasons of shows on there. Note, I don't really need HD content as much, they just don't care. I know I can buy off of itunes, but is there a way to get the news? Like a program that will take a RSS feed of CNN or something? Basically I want Hulu to have news. Can all of this tie into front row? What hardware addons can I purchase? like a tuner or somehting. I'll probably get a used Mac Mini to try it out on first.

This is the system disk that contains
- OS X Lion
- apps
- user work/personal data
There is a big external (SATA, RAID1) HD that receives the Time Machine backups... (and contains user files, pictures, ...).
Question:
- Is there a way (eg via Time Machine) to save the whole system HD on the external drive
- Then boot (from? Lion comes from Apple Store)
- And recover everything - apps and settings... - from the external drive?

Apr 7, 2009I'll be fitting my new 09 mac mini internal hard drive hopefully tonight. I want to copy all the information (programs etc) onto my new hard drive before I install it. Whats the best way of going about this? I already have an external caddy, so am I right in thinking I can put the new hard drive into that, connect it up to my mini, format it, install osx, and use migration assistant, or I vaguely remember something called 'cloner' or something similar to that name to copy all the data? That when all the info is copied I can take out the stock hard drive, remove the new drive from the external caddy and place it into the mac mini? Then it should boot up fine?

Jun 1, 2009When I start my Mini Mac, I press + hold alt. Then press windows when it starts up, it goes as far as the loading screen. Then the whole screen turns black and it restarts the computer. I tried putting it in safe mode, and putting it back were the last time it didn't have a problem, but both options just do the same thing as before. I don't want to delete windows.

Jan 14, 2010I've googled to see if I can find a solution to this but not had any luck - wonder if you could help. My Mac Mini is 1.5Ghz PowerPc G4, 512Mb RAM, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago and in the past while it's really been playing up a bit. It first started overheating and shutting down when I was doing really resource intensive stuff - for example, opening a large amount of RAW image files. However, it's now started taking to shutting down when I'm doing normal browsing, using Spotify etc The machine also tends to hang a lot, and I can't really stream videos very well either. The vents at the back of the Mac definitely aren't blocked and there's plenty of space around the machine to let the air circulate.

Oct 29, 2009i did a last minute backup before i sold my late 07 Mini last weak and I was a little apprehensive abouthow well the restore would work on the new 2.53 mini.
Well I can now say I am very impressed, i turned on the new Mini and it asked if i wanted to restore and gave me a few options. i chose the TC and it was off and running, it took about 2hrs. when it finished it was like i was still using the old Mini, a perfect image clone. all my email, pictures, docs, etc. were there just like i left them.
so for those who have never done a restore you have nothing to worry about (as long as your TC doesn't crap out first LOL)

But in the mean time while using the mini I'd like to run my 30" dell at native res, and a 24" dell at native res. Would the vid card on the mini handle this? I don't intend gaming or doing anything hugely graphic intensive.

Aug 21, 2010Just fired up my Mini Mac I purchased about 4 months ago. I bought it so I could hook it up directly to my Samsung Series 8 LED TV. I'm hooking up 2 External HD's to it; 1 with my music and music videos and 1 with all my movies. The Externals are WD 1 terabyte and LaCie 1 terabyte. My music and music videos will go on the WD because it only has USB 2.0 and the movies on my LaCie which has firewire.
1) on my TV (acting as a monitor) I cannot see the menu bar. I can access it, but is not visible. Even the dock items when activated are not totally visible.
2) I bought a mini dvi to dvi converter and have connected to my TV using a dvi to hdmi connector. My TV has 4 hdmi inputs. Using one for my DVD player and one for the Mini Mac. The issue is when I have my Mini Mac plugged into the TV and I try and watch regular TV, whether through a satellite TV or the same TV, the TV picture is very snowing. If I pull out the cord connecting the Mini Mac to the TV the snow immediately goes away.
I would like to move my music library from my MacBook Pro to my WD external HD and than play/access my music through my Mac Mini iTunes. I'm pretty sure how to move my library, but what about the music files?

Oct 16, 2010I was wondering if anyone uses their Mac mini to do some basic video editing and mess with photos? My friend is notorious for shooting video and making DVDs of her video. I'm looking for her since she will be new to a Mac. She will basically be doing cutting and pasting of video, adding photos and music in the video, and such things like that. She will not be doing real intense graphics, maybe just having some effects that the video software provides. Question I have asked whether the Mac mini would be powerful enough for her needs. Would final cut be able to run on it in case she decides to get more into it?

Mar 13, 2009I am currently the owner of an aging Dual 800 Quicksilver and running Tiger on it. Been working on this machine for almost 7 years and still runs like a champ. It is starting to show its age big time, especially in CS3. Just wondering if I should hold off on getting the Mac Mini until Snow Leopard comes as its default system? Do you think Apple will give the mini another boost in specs this year? I'll be getting the Mini this year at some point with the Dell e-IPS 22" monitor. I'm a little nervous since I have heard so many issues with CS3 and Leopard (at work, we tried it and it constantly crashes). I don't want to bother with CS4 (or CS5 for that matter).
How much faster would the new mini be compared to what I have now? And ONE last thing. I know the 2009 mini has only been out for a short time, has anyone attempted to put in more RAM than the 4 GB supported? Photoshop is a hog for RAM if working on multiple layers, etc.

Apr 13, 2009I just need to know something about the harddrive formats. I understand that if you want to use a format that works on both windows and mac then you cant have files bigger than 4gb. I have all my music, videos, pictures and such from my old computer stored on an external harddrive and I have files bigger than 4gb so I guess the mac mini wont be able to read this harddrive. Is there anything I can do? I wanna get all my files from my current computer transfered to the mac mini. Secondly, whats the best TV software & hardware for the Mac Mini? Ive looked at Elgatos EyeTV Hybrid and EyeTV Plus 250 or whatever. I have a satellite dish, and 90% of the channels are analogue, so I need the best for analogue (and digital as well) TV.

1) to stripe (Raid 0) the two internal disks, or
2) use one as the install/OS disk and the other as the data/scratch disk?
(...assuming you have a 1TB external backup drive, and find FW800 to be much slower than internal SATA for a data/scratch disk).
