Mac Mini :: New SuperDrive LOUD?
Apr 14, 2009Just curious if its my mini or all slot loaded SuperDrive are extremely loud. I hear a loud fan and clicking when watching movies, or putting in cds. Is this normal?

IMac :: Superdrive Noisy Sometimes - Loud Vibration
Sep 2, 2010I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA32N Superdrive in my 2010 i7 iMac and I've had to reinstall the OS twice, because someone in the house kept messing with different files. Anyhow, the first time I installed it the superdrive was very loud, as it was the second time I installed it. It was like a loud vibration, as soon as I put the disc in. I have put other discs in and they are as quiet as can be. I've tested 9 or 10 discs and they all seem to be quiet. So I decided to put in the install disc one more time and it was quiet as well, no more vibration. Is there something wrong here or are these drives just noisy sometimes?

Oct 30, 2009The Apple party line seems to be that the Mac Book Air Superdrive only works with the Mac Book Air and the new Mac Mini Server. Is this because of hardware, firmware, software or marketing? Is there an actual hardware difference regarding the power rating of the USB interfaces on the server version of the Mini Server compared with the standard Minis? Is there something special in the boot ROM of the Mini Server that allows it to use this drive? The boot ROM version on my server is MM31.00AD.B00, is this the same on the other Mini models? I'm guessing I'd still be able to continue using the drive if I loaded the Mini Server with Snow Leopard Client.

Aug 25, 2009I bought a 1.5GHz G4 Mini with Combo Drive. Ordered a Superdrive via eBay and fitted it (2 minute job - done it many times previously). Panasonic Model UJ-846-B march 2008. On this occasion, the drive fails to work. I can insert a disc and eject it (using the button on the front of the drive) but the drive isn't "seen" by the Mini. [URL] I received a second drive from the seller and it has the same problem. I assume that it doesn't have the correct "driver" firmware installed.

Sep 10, 2007I just got a mac mini on thursday, went on a small trip on friday-sunday. When i came home to my sleeping mac mini and woke it, it made a TERRIBLY loud fan clicking noise. My old PB 12" made this noise after I had dropped it on floor from about 3 feet. I didnt drop my mac mini, i barely used it for 2 hours before i had to leave on my trip. The sound eventually goes away though, once the mini heats up a little i guess. So i'm pretty convinced it's the fan, but why would it suddenly do this?

Dec 17, 2009After about three Cd uploads it acts up. It will start to get track names then stops. If I re-start the Mini it will work again for another three Cd's or so.

When I insert the Leopard disk I cannot get it to read the disk, the box comes up as if I have inserted a blank DVD. I have also tried inserting ilfe09 disk and have the same problem. Jun 16, 2012I have just brought back an external superdrive to my local Apple Store because it wouldn't physically swallow any disc. So I got a new one and back home ... same problem. I plugged it to my mac mini, my MacBook Pro, my 1st portable PC, my tower pc ... nothing. I made sure the second time that I didn't plug it to the same mac first (in case I had a faulty USB port which could destroy the superdrive). Plus it ejects CDs and DVDs fine if I insert one 3/4 into it. So the mechanism is working, but no matter what I do, it won't swallow any disc.

But then I thought, will the Superdrive I currently have in my 12" Powerbook G4 Aluminum work in the Mini? It would save me some $$$ if I could buy the 1.83ghz and go without the Superdrive and then just swap optical drives between the two machines.

Mar 21, 2009I am going to remove the Superdrive from my 2009 mini and replace it with a second HD as detailed by ifixit [URL] I will then run OS X from the X-25M SSD and the second drive will be a 320Gb Scorpio Black which I will run XP in boot camp from ( have to use additional internal drive to boot XP from since the X25-M currently will not work with XP and I cant get XP to boot from an external drive...). This leaves my setup without a way to work with optical media so I was looking to get an external usb drive and plug it in whenever I would need to install something from a dvd, or burn a cd etcetera.
Instead of throwing away the removed superdrive though and buy another drive, how about recycling it as an external usb superdrive? I would connect it via usb with a Deltaco sata to usb adapter I have. Anyone see a reason why this would not work? Has this been done before?

Jul 27, 2008I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

Sep 12, 2010I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Apr 6, 2009I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.
Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
MacBook :: Sometimes Fan Gets Really Loud And Hot?
Jan 29, 2009I have a macbook 13". About 1.5 years old and the fan gets really loud sometimes. I know because it gets hot but it never used to be this loud. It's like I am listening to a helicopter fly by. My brother's Acer he bought for $300 is not as loud as my mac. (Not saying that it is a worse computer)

However when i turned it on, Straight from bootup the fan was running extremely fast and sounded like a jet engine. This did not stop through the system fully loading so figured I would turn off the machine for the night and see if the problem would be fixed in the morning. But the same thing just happened again. Does anyone have any idea what this may be, or how to fix it?
