Mac Mini :: Native SSD Encryption?

Nov 20, 2010

The new OCZ enterprise drives offer native AES encryption, it seems the key is based off your bios password. Now tell me if this will work on the 2010 minis and EFI firmware password?

Mac Pro :: Can't Get Native Resolution On Second Monitor In OS X

Oct 13, 2010

Here are my hardware specs:

Mac Pro 1,1

NVidia 7300GT (I need a new video card, anyone want to sell me one? [=)

2 x Samsung Synmaster 2494SW (native resolution 1920x1080)

Update:

I booted into windows 7 and I am now able to get both native resolutions.

Though, I am still unable to get both native resolutions (using DVI to DVIs) inside OS X for some reason. In OS X my second monitor is displayed as "VGA Display" and it completely black.

I am not sure why it works in bootcamp using Windows 7, but not in Snow Leopard. I am guessing this is a problem with the OS X configuration.

OS X :: Does Not Detect HD TV Native Resolution

May 19, 2008

I am connecting my Macbook on my HD TV but the osx does not detect the appropriate native resolution. MY Samsung TV has a native resolution of 1365x768 but the osx only detects and offers 1280 or 1920 (they both look really bad on my TV). I used a mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable. I also tried, without success, to create specific display settings using SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX. (10.5.2) I know that there is not a big difference between 1280 and 1365 but still, it's very annoying espacially that I my old PC with XP detected the right resolution as soon as connected it...

OS X :: Monitor Does Not Allow To Set Native Resolution

May 28, 2009

I have a Hyundai W240D 24" LCD monitor and it works perfectly in Windows Vista SP2 64 bit running under Boot Camp but when I restart the computer to use Mac OS X it only shows 1920 x 1080 as the maximum resolution rather than 1920 x 1200. I have zapped the PRAM, repaired disk permissions and run fsck -f in single user mode and still the problem persists. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this?

Applications :: Native App Like MythTV?

Aug 7, 2009

I have a Mac mini (older Intel 965 graphics chipset, not current Nvidia), which I'd like to use as a PVR system, recording live TV, playing back video on my TV, etc. I have a Hauppauge card to capture the digital TV stream (I'm in the UK - freeview). Is there a system like MythTV for Mac OS X, that is a bit more polished (and that will make use of my current hardware)? I've tried using MythTV under Linux, and while it works, it's very unpolished. I can't find anything better that's even Mac-only.

I keep getting an error on my computer saying that there was an error when joining the network. Here is the router configuration window: So I type in my passphrase and I get the error. How can I bypass this? And what is the difference between a passphrase and a key?

OS X :: PGP Whole Disk Encryption

Feb 26, 2010

My company is rolling out this for their macs and I'm curious to know what you guys thinks about it. My home mac has a partition for linux and for OSX, plus I'm generally concerned about interacting with the system when the disk is encrypted. Since its my home mac I really want to avoid needing to load this on. They're setting up policy that you must use whole disk encryption if you wish to log in via vpn - at least for windows and macs. Since I also use Linux I think I have a loop hole I'm still curious to hear people's opinion on PGP whole disk encryption.

Windows On Mac :: Photoshop Run Speed - Native Mac Vs Win

Jan 26, 2009

I have recently switched platform from Win XP machine to Mac (MBP w/ OS X 10.5.5). I have license for Photoshop CS3 on Win. Cost or switching to native Mac version of CS4 (can't migrate CS3... need to upgrade + migrate) is approximately same as purchasing Parallels or Fusion plus WinXP to run my current Win CS3 version. I am satisfied with CS3 and don't look forward to learning modified interface and tools of CS4. I think it will come down to speed. Will native Mac CS4 run faster than comparable program w/ Win on Mac (Parallels or VM Fusion)?

Hardware :: Monitors & TV's - Native Resolution?

Jun 27, 2009

I read this in a post elsewhere and am looking for a new 24 inch + monitor on a budget. I could ideally use the monitor for music work on my mac, my xbox and snes and for watching tv. "If I may offer one bit of advice about LCD monitors is that they only run optimally in their native resolution. You will need to get a large enough monitor to support this resolution for comfortable viewing or you can end up with tiny desktop icons. Reducing the resolution will likely degrade image quality." What does this mean given I have the unibody macbook pro 2.8 released around christmas 2008 with the best the better graphics card (whichever one that was).

IMac :: 20 And 24 Native Resolution On The 9400m?

Sep 10, 2009

Which will perform better on wow or any game, an imac 20inch or 24inch with the same spec of 2.66ghz 9400m 4gb memory?

They're both are almost identical but the native resolutions are different.I'm comparing a 20inch imac resolution 1680by1050 to a 24inch 1920by1200.

So I'm guessing the 9400m will do better on a 20inch imac right?

Since the 9400m is not all that powerful so I'm guessing it can't do well on the 1920by1200 when gaming ?

Hardware :: Using TV As Display - Native Resolution

Jan 21, 2010

Here is what I am working with.
White MacBook (Late 2007)
Sylvania 22" LCD TV (1366X768 resolution)
Mini-DVI to HDMI
SwitchResX

So the problem is that the native resolution of the TV isn't a normal one. Called Apple. No help. Called Sylvania. Told me to call Apple. I've tried using SwitchResX to set the resolution to 1366X768 and have tried variations found on other websites (1368, 1360) but every time I restart it reverts back to 1080i. While 1080i works, the problem is that it is very hard on my eyes, and the text is hard to read, something I am assuming will hopefully be fixed when I get it to work at the native resolution.

OS X :: Apple Devices And WEP Encryption

Nov 30, 2010

In advance, a disclaimer: Please don't lecture me about how we shouldn't be using WEP...I'm fully aware of just how bad WEP sucks from a network security standpoint. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to change it at the moment. Now that that's over with...why is it that NONE of the Apple devices I've used have ever worked correctly on the WEP network here? Where I work, we've got all Cisco equipment, but unfortunately, we're still on WEP. We've got hundreds of Windows devices that operate just fine with it. On the other hand, on every Mac portable device I've had since I started working here 7 years ago, it's been an issue. I enter all the information correctly when I try to add the network as an Airport profile, and one of two things happens: It prompts me for the password over and over. It takes the information like everything is ok, but then it doesn't connect (no "bars") Every once in a while I will get a device to connect and work, but it's usually only temporary...it'll just stop working all of a sudden. It doesn't have to do with proximity to the access points; believe me, I checked. I'm positive I'm entering everything correctly, as I actually work for the IT Department here. I've had numerous portables through the years including various MacBook/PowerBook Pros, iMacs, and now an iPad which also doesn't want to work on our WEP network. We have four buildings here, which are technically four separate networks, all configured with the same type of access points, and Apple devices don't connect properly in any of them. Being that we have plenty of Windows-based devices, as well as Android portable devices that work on our WEP network, it would appear that the problem is isolated to Apple.

Is anyone else here still stuck using WEP (perhaps at your workplace), and has anyone else had similar problems to what I'm having here? What did you do to resolve them? I'm dying to get my iPad on the wireless here, but it just won't cooperate.

OS X :: Time Machine Encryption

Oct 26, 2007

I won't get my copy until later today, but I thought I would ask this question as I can't see it listed anywhere here. Time Machine is a security *plus* in the same way that all backups are. Without encryption turned on however, it's actually a security *minus* because it creates an easily readable, detailed, time-stamped, trail of all your actions at the computer. For that reason I won't be using it unless the encryption also works well. However, it seems that the system comes with it turned off by default, and I was wondering if anyone had turned on encryption and if there was a performance hit associated with that.

OS X :: Native NTFS Support In Snow Leopard?

Nov 23, 2009

I routinely transfer files bigger than 4GB between Windows and OSX. Right now I use ntfs-3g and macfuse. It seems to work, but every now and then I get file transfer errors, like error -36. The jump drives are fine, and the files are OK since I can transfer them to the PCs without a problem. With the "hack" that enables native NTFS R/W for Snow Leopard, I notice people have to enter the UUID of each volume for it to automount. Isn't there a way to set it up so one can just pop a jump drive in and have it automount? I'm dealing with DV files, and each machie is on a different network - different site so I'm pretty much stuck using removable drives.
