Mac Mini :: Apple Remote Setup / Functionality With Plex?

Jul 13, 2010

I recently bought the 2010 mac mini with the apple remote and I am very happy. I am having a little bit of trouble using the apple remote. Every time I turn on the mac mini I need to go to preferences and change the options of Candelair for the apple remote to work properly with Plex. I mean. I turn on the mac mini and the apple remote wont work absolutely. I need to get the magic mouse and go to preferences and change some options. It seems that this is the only way to "activate" the Plex functionality.

What I want is just to turn on the mac mini and immediately open Plex with the apple remote without needing to use the magic mouse or going to preferences. Is this possible? There must be a way to control the mac mini and Plex just from the start of Mac OS X. It gets very annoying to use the magic mouse along the apple remote. I turn on the mac mini and if I press the middle button (the one to open Plex with Candelair) nothing happens. As I say, I need to go to preferences and adjust the settings of Candelair and then it works. Why doesn't it work from the beginning?

Mac Mini :: Moving From PS3 Media Server With Plex?

Aug 31, 2010

Currently I stream media (videos only at the moment) through my older MBP C2D Laptop using PS3 Media Server. I find the PS3 is loud and annoying so thinking of picking up a new generation Mac Mini to run my Media Serving Needs. My Equipment list is:

Pioneer 5080HD 768p Plasma

Yamaha RX-V3900 AVR

The rest of the equipment does not really matter. Thinking of hokoing it up by HDMI through the AVR to the plasma. Want to run Plex as my media front end. Now I also have an Acer Windows Home Server box kicking around with 1TB drive in it. Is it possible to use that on the network as a type of Media Storage that can be accessed by the Mini through Plex? Should I just use the WHS box as an archive unit? I know I will fill up the mini's HD fairly quickly.

Also I usually watch 720p MKV files through my PS3 so would I be fine doing that on the mini as well using Plex?

Applications :: Apple Address Book Functionality Expansion

Feb 26, 2009

Does anyone know if Apple is working on improving Address Book? It seems that not much has changed in a long time with the Address Book. It is a nice app for keeping up with personal contacts. However, do you think that Apple will develop it further to be more like Outlook, in terms of features that can be applied for business use? Please let me know if this is being worked on or if there are rumors. Outlook 2003 is turning to dust in the wind, and I am not that satisfied with Office 2007. I am hoping to move away from those products, but Apple's offerings pale in comparison to Microsoft's.

Hardware :: Apple Magic Trackpad With Keyboard Functionality?

Aug 16, 2010

I'm working on a software project to turn the bottom 1/3 of the magic trackpad into a keyboard. The idea is that you print the layout of the iPhone keyboard onto an overhead transparency sheet or an invisibleshield sticker and stick it to the trackpad, and then a software app renders the keyboard on screen and generates keystrokes for the correct buttons. I should add that you don't have to stick anything to the trackpad if you don't want to, but it makes it a lot easier to use.

I have this semi-working right now. Is this something that anyone here would be interested in trying in a few days or a week when it's working better?

Hardware :: How To Setup Time Machine To Backup Remote Windows Drive

Dec 30, 2009

I just got my new iMac 21.5, works great. I'm a Mac newbie. I have a remote Windows machine I'd like to use as a network drive. I also have a NAS (Netgear SC101T) which I basically don't use anymore, thus I'll use the PC. I have two wireless routers so that function is of no value to me. So IMHO I don't need a Time Capsule.

I'd like to configure Time Machine to use the Windows networked drive as the "Time Capsule". Is this possible? If so, how do I do that? And how does that impact the Restore functionality if I'm not using the $300+ Time Capsule? Will it still restore a dead machine if it comes down to it?

Hardware :: Aluminum Apple Remote Does Not Have An Apple Logo?

Jan 8, 2010

I know this is kind of off topic and the logo does not make the product any different but I found it a little odd that Apple decided to not to put their logo on the remote. It's made out of aluminum and has enough space on the back for a logo to be present. Apple put's their logo on everything that has enough space for one. The old remote had it, mouse, keyboard, MacBook/MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, iPod's, iPhone, docks, and gift cards all have it. Their earphones don't have it because they are to small to put a logo without making them look stupid. I wonder what Jonathan Ive and Jobs were thinking when they decided to not put the logo. The back of the remote almost seems bare without it.

I could rip the music into her collection but I think I'll run into all sorts of problems moving it to the mini and then onto the iPhone and iPad. Any thoughts on how I can rip from a remote drive?

Mac Mini :: Can't Seem To Find A Way To Pair Remote?

Jan 2, 2010

I've recently received my refurbished March 2009 Mac Mini. I want to use it as a media center and have an harmony remote that I would like to use to control it (mostly for boxee). My problem is that I can't seem to find a way to pair my remote with it. Let me explain.

So I launched Logitech Harmony Remote Software and added a new device, the Apple Mac Mini. I then updated my remote and finally updated my remote. Now, I have a macbook pro and a mac mini. Without pairing anything, I can effectively control the sound on my macbook pro, but not on my Mac Mini. Yes I've checked in the system pref in both machines, nothing is paired and I do not have a real apple remote.

If I use the pair function, it does pair with my macbook pro and keep controlling it and still does nothing on the mac mini (expected). If I unpair it then close my macbook pro and use the pair function near my mac mini, it still do not want to pair.My question is, aside from bringing it to the apple store to get it checked, is there a way to test if my IR port is working on my mac mini?

Mac Mini :: Creating FTP Server With Remote Access?

Aug 15, 2010

My goal is to by a mac mini that will run 24/7 it will be connected to about 5TB's of storage that will have all my personal data on it. My goal is to create an FTP server that will host all these files that I can access remotely and let friends and family access it. I pretty much have it all sorted out I just wanted to check with some people on here. To run it I will be using a program called PureFTPd to manage the server and I can create accounts and manage them all through this application. Does anyone have a better way for me to do this or an alternate application that is better, And also I have connected to my mac book pro remotely using the built in FTP feature and PureFTP so yer, Does anyone else have a better idea for me running a server?

Mac Mini :: Sharing Over Remote Disc (macbook)?

Apr 12, 2012

I have a Mac Mini (2011) and a MacBook (2006) I want to use my Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 CD on to my Mini using the Remote Disc option. I put the CD into my MacBook and click all the options and follow the instructions from the Apple Support 'MacBook Air, Mac Mini: How to use Remote Disc to share DVDs or CDs from a Mac or Windows-based computer' When I click Remote Disc on my Mini the MacBook shows up and when I click on that, the CD shows up but I can't open or copy the CD onto my Mini. I keep getting an error message which makes no sense.

Incase it was my MacBook (2006) running Leopard was the problem and it being to far behind my Mac Mini running Lion I used my mums Windows Dell Laptop which runs Windows 7 and again, followed the instructions. Same thing, same error message, which I was expecting because I know how Mac hates to open .exe files.

I don't know what to do to solve the problem, can it be solved? Is my MacBook and CDs just to old to copy and install on my Mac Mini, would a MacBook Pro 2010 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 solve the problem? I'd like to know before I save up and splash out any money. The error message says something like it's not supported even though we downloaded the updates the support thing suggested doing if we needed too and something about it can't read it because it's not there or you need to have it installed previously, well how could I have installed the on the Mini if CD it never had a CD drive, where else would I have got the programme from, I haven't found a downloadable version of Office Word or I'd have done that already, by the way, if you know where a full programme download is available?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Get Apple Remote Working

May 16, 2010

I just bought a brand new MBP from the Apple Store today, 17" one. I had an iMac, and did a transfer via Firewire of all my stuff to the new MBP. I then wiped the iMac clean and reinstalled Snow Leopard and moved it to my parents house. However the Apple Remote I had with the iMac, which was paired with the iMac, will not work with the MBP at all. I tried going into System Prefs on the MBP and pairing the remote, no luck. I tried turning off the infrared receiver in the same settings pane, no luck. I tried popping out the battery of the remote and put it back in, no luck. I then tried my girlfriend's Apple Remote (which is paired with her MacBook 13"), no luck. I turned off the infrared receiver in her MacBook to make sure it wasn't interfering or whatever, still no luck. Neither Apple Remote will work with my brand new MBP. Does it have a broken infrared port u think?
