Hardware :: Is Apple Remote Necessary On IMac?
Nov 3, 2009I really do like the look of the new apple remotes, However will I actually use it? Isn't that what the mouse is for if you're sitting infront of your iMac.

View 6 RepliesI have Apple Remote Desktop 3 installed on my work iMac OS X 10.5 and I can connect to from another Mac no problem. Is there a way to remote to it using Microsoft Remote Desktop running on Vista? Or do I have to use VNC?
If I have to use VNC, I have UltraVNC to connect to my linux box and it works fine. However How do I set it up to remote to apple remote desktop? What port do I use? I use 5901 for the linux box.
my parents have an iMac (not sure of the exact model except its maybe 2 or 3 months old). Anyways, it's kind of in between the living room and the kitchen and is used often (among other things) to play music in those two areas using iTunes.
I was wondering if the Apple Remote Control would work well... the only catch being that the remote is IR and that the position of the computer means that a lot of times, the remote would be facing the side and backs of the computer. I doubt the remote would work but I also heard that the remote's IR is very robust.... is it strong enough to be able to used from these angles (im assuming by bouncing the signal off walls or something?).
I've been thinking of using an iMac as a video player in my workout room. I'd like it to be able to grab videos (tv shows) from my main iMac. I'd also use it to play dvd's.
I was thinking of buying a used G4 iMac to do this, but would like to be able to use a remote control to use Front Row.
First, can I use Front Row on iMac #2 to get videos from iMac #1?
Secondly, does the Apple Remote Controller work with a ppc G4 iMac?
I ordered my iMac yesterday and now I discovered that it doesn't include remote.

Is there a way to pair these remotes, I have one for my iMac and 1 for my ATV, and whenever I play something on my ATV it also starts a movie on my apple, usually a different movie. Can they be paired separately somehow so they are controlling only the unit they are suppose to be with?
i have an apple tv and the universal dock(1st gen), the remote that comes with the apple tv also controls the universal dock, but i want the remote to only control the apple tv not the universal dock, every time i play something in the apple tv my iPhone which is connected to the dock also plays a song.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI know this is kind of off topic and the logo does not make the product any different but I found it a little odd that Apple decided to not to put their logo on the remote. It's made out of aluminum and has enough space on the back for a logo to be present. Apple put's their logo on everything that has enough space for one. The old remote had it, mouse, keyboard, MacBook/MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, iPod's, iPhone, docks, and gift cards all have it. Their earphones don't have it because they are to small to put a logo without making them look stupid. I wonder what Jonathan Ive and Jobs were thinking when they decided to not put the logo. The back of the remote almost seems bare without it.

When I look on the internet, they say I have to go to system preference -> security and privacy and then you can find your infrared but mine don't show the infrared.

Any word on a newer version of Apple Remote Desktop? I'm really looking for a new version that fixes some of the outstanding bugs in version 3.2. I am also hoping that Apple has an easier way to share lists. This is a big PITA in my organization, and I have already submitted feedback to Apple for it.

In another way, how can I know if my machine is an Apple Remote Desktop client?
I just bought a brand new MBP from the Apple Store today, 17" one. I had an iMac, and did a transfer via Firewire of all my stuff to the new MBP. I then wiped the iMac clean and reinstalled Snow Leopard and moved it to my parents house. However the Apple Remote I had with the iMac, which was paired with the iMac, will not work with the MBP at all. I tried going into System Prefs on the MBP and pairing the remote, no luck. I tried turning off the infrared receiver in the same settings pane, no luck. I tried popping out the battery of the remote and put it back in, no luck. I then tried my girlfriend's Apple Remote (which is paired with her MacBook 13"), no luck. I turned off the infrared receiver in her MacBook to make sure it wasn't interfering or whatever, still no luck. Neither Apple Remote will work with my brand new MBP. Does it have a broken infrared port u think?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to buy a new Apple Remote as mine has seemingly vanished (I think it may have got thrown out ), so I need to buy one - but I've heard, aside from the obvious love/hate of its new aesthetics, that the new remote is also a bit bigger? How do people who've used both remotes feel about the new one?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is gonna sound crazy, but last weekend I found a Apple Remote Desktop 3 (still in shrink wrap) in a parking lot. I don't really know anything about it. I have not opened it. It is Apple Part #: MC172Z/A, Version 3.3. It has a "unlimited managed systems" sticker on the front. Is this the complete software, or is there more that goes with it? I have done some research and just got more confused about 'administrator and client' software. Just wondering what I have here without opening it.

I disabled the ability to control my iMac with the Apple Remote when I got my Mac Mini (they were in the same line of sight). Then I upgraded to OSX Lion on both when it was released and I cant find the option to enable the support of remote again!(I.e the option isn't available/visible in System Pref. -> Security -> General) I just moved my iMac into another room and I thought it would be a nice feature to use it as a "TV" sometimes..

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm taking a computer class in high school. The teacher's computer has Apple Remote Desktop to control any computer when necessary.
The problem is, the class helper has access to this computer and usually takes control of my computer and mess up with my computer project "as a joke". My only workaround to pull the Ethernet cord from my eMac before he does so; if you do it after, the computer stops responding until after a while when the cord is back in. This is usually when the helper leaves the computer; I assume he has to give me back control of my computer before I can use it.
I am a network administrator for an environment that has both windows and mac systems. I personally use a MacBook Pro for all of my admin duties. With Microsoft's RDC I can save the connection to each machine as a file and drag the folder containing those files into the dock to create a stack for quick access. My question is, is there any way I can do something similar for the Mac connections for Apple Remote Desktop, so I don't have to launch the app, then go to the machine I want to connect to?
View 1 Replies View RelatedComing from a portable background, and having dropped a few thousand on a Mac Pro last week, I thought I'd be able to skimp on buying a mic for Skype by using the new mic feature on Apple earphones...not so!
Bit weird, that they work on the MacBook range which already have an included mic, but not the desktops, which don't!
Just an observation... would a software update cure it?
