Oct 14, 2008i'm about to buy a mac mini as an upgrade to my iMac G5 and want to upgrade the hard disk in it as soon as i get it. I'd like to get a slightly quicker 7200 rpm disk to speed things up but don't know exactly which size it is. I know it's a 2.5inch sata drive but the site i buy my parts from have a number of 2.5inch drives and i don't know which one i need. If you take a look at the link below you'll see they stock 2.5" x 1/8H, 2.5" and 2.5" x 1/6H drives but i don't know if i need just the 2.5" or one of the others. Feb 4, 2012I just bought my first Mac for use in my personal photo studio, a refurbed 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.5ghz. As I was setting up external drives and putting the mini through its paces, I ran a disk benchmark (BlackMagic Disk Speed Test) and got some pretty poor scores.Â
My mini's internal drive hits roughly 40MB/s for both sequential read and sequential write. Am I correct in thinking that this is poor performance even for a 5400 rpm drive? The drive is mostly full; there are 50GB free. Would you recommend that I address this with Applecare? Â

And then is it possible to format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT?

Jun 17, 2012This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted.After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again.It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â

iPad 1, using network, no issues.
Last week it suddenly started incrementing the computer name on the network: myName Mini (2), MyName Mini (3),...This causes issues with banking software because it assumes it is a new computer each time and makes me register the new computer each time.

Aug 18, 2008I have this 1.42GHz G4 Mac Mini that my mother uses for very basic stuff but still gets bogged down by skype videoconferencing or by having more than a couple of tabs open on the browser. I was thinking of adding some RAM to its original 512MB (DDR 3200 on 1 module).
I checked prices on Ebuyer and 1GB of DDR3200 SODIMM will set me back �26 while a DDR4200 module of the same capacity will cost �13. I was wondering if it would be OK to mix the 2 memory types and get 1.5GB, or if I should replace the original RAM completely.

Jun 28, 2012I can't deposit a new midi into my library. I try following the instructions but the song doesn't appear on the main Music library list, and I can't drop in to the Playlist file, where I need to have it as an mp3, so I can make a new CD of this song list. Â
I just had my iMac mini cleaned up and upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7.4 and things are not working the way they were. Before this, I was able just to drag the midi into the main Music library list, turn it into an mp3, then drag a copy into the Playlist.Â

OS X Mavericks :: Hard Drive Storage Not Adding Up?
Sep 10, 2014I was shocked to see that my hard drive was close to full last night when I checked on its capacity. Mainly because I just wiped clean a month ago and reinstalled with the current version of Mavericks.  It would appear that my problem lies within a massive amount of storage used classified as "other". My HD holds 320 GB and of that, "other" is taking up 161 GB along with my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps taking up a combined 120 GB. This leaves me with about 40 GB left of free space.Â
I am unable to pinpoint the location of these "other" files. Totaling up the four subfolders in my HD (System, Library, Users and Applications) only amounts to 120 GB which can be traced back to my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps. This leaves 161 GB floating around used somewhere that I haven't the slightest clue of where it is. I have used Grand Perspective and a disk space analyzer from the app store and they both only recognize 120 GB being used by the hard drive. Â
To make things a little more interesting, when I first noticed this "other" issue, it was taking up 145 GB and over the course of an hour or so after multiple restarts it has worked its way up to the 161 GB it is at now. Is there some type of glitch here?Â
I have tried restarting in Safe Mode to reset any stuck processes, but that didn't work either. I have searched similar problems but most people have found massive log files which they were able to pinpoint using a disk analyzer.Â
With a clean wipe and reset only a month ago, how can the "other" be this big already?Â
I have a 2007 iMac which ran great with snow leopard...I currently have the latest version of Mavericks 10.9.4

Dec 6, 2008I'm on Tiger 10.4.11, and the latest iTunes. I have an external hard drive on which I keep all my music files, managed by iTunes. I'm running out of room on that drive. At some point, it is not practical to keep increasing the size of the drive, as the reliability goes down. I'd like to keep my drives to 1TB or so. So, the other solution is to add a second external hard drive, where all new music files can go to. How to do it, so iTunes doesn't freak out? Here's what I'm thinking - could you guys help make it work?
I thought to add the second drive and then in iTunes preferences -->Advanced---> iTunes Music folder location CHANGE to the NEW drive. That way, I'd have iTunes copy all new music to the NEW DRIVE. Question: Now, how do I go about having iTunes reference files on the FIRST drive, so that the Library is up to date, and when I select something to play from the FIRST drive, iTunes knows how to find it?

Mac Mini :: Using A Mini SD Card As A Scratch Disk?
Dec 15, 2009I am getting an i7 iMac in the near future (ordered yesterday, won't arrive til Jan. 3rd ) And I am getting it stock with just the 4gigs of ram, and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, but I probably will at some point when prices come down. Anyway, I use photoshop some (not a power user or anything but I use it for some stuff) and I was wondering if you could use a mini sd card as a scratch disk, and if you can, is it a good idea? Thoughts/opinions/comments.
On to my HD question: should I pay apple to upgrade my HD to the 2TB drive? I think I will definitely fill up the 1TB so I'd like the extra space, but would prefer to buy the drive from ifixit or owc or something to save some cash, but the thought of having to remove the huge glass screen with suction cups and disconnecion the LCD seems a little daunting so I was wondering if I should just save myself the hassle and get the upgrade done by mac (it'd be $225 instead of $250 because I get the student discount) Of course I'd lose out on the 1TB HD that I could later stick in to an external HD enclosure, so its a pretty big hit in terms of cash.
From watching the teardown on ifixit changing he HD looks like it could be a little tricky, but I'd like some input from you guys. I am pretty tech savy (former PC user so I've replaced a lot of components like ram, video cards, HDs, ec cetera) but getting past the wall of glass is daunting, but I may just be hyping it up, so I wanted some input.
Third and finally, I got the wired keyboard because I wanted a # pad but I just found out my old Logitech G13 has mac drivers so I was thinking of switching to the wireless one just so I could have a wireless mouse + keyboard for when I want to watch a movie or something from further away, though ideally I think I'd prefer a keyboard with a built in track pad or track ball, but I don't really want to fork out the cash for it now. So is there any advantage of the wired numeric apple keyboard compared to the Logitech one? I can still control media, I have a remote, and it can do expose and screens and all that good stuff. But as always I wanted to make sure I wasn't over looking anything.

Applications :: Adding To An Existing Itunes Folder On External Hard Drive?
Jan 15, 2009Okay here's the thing: I (not so long ago) copied my entire itunes library to my external hard drive. Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.
Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?
OS X :: Unable;e To Boot From Internal Hard Drive / Use Disk Warrior To Repair Disk?
Apr 11, 2010I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

Apr 24, 2012I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!Â
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.Â
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

OS X Leopard :: Disk Write Cache Corruption On External Hard Disk?
Feb 15, 2011Recently I purchased an external hard disk, to put all of my pictures of my baby due to space limitations on my internal laptop drive. Since my Canon camera 10 megapixel pictures take up a ton of space this was occurring at an alarming rate. My intention was also to back up to DVD but never got to it. This is both a comment and a question.
Now said baby, is getting really good at pulling cords etc. He managed to do this on the external drive firewire cable. As far as i know the drive was not in the process of actually writing. However, after a few minutes and trying to re-plug the drive the OS crashed with a Grey Screen of Death hardware error that tells you that you need to push the power button..
This apparently corrupted the drive's directory. Upon reboot the drive would not mount. Since there were time machine backups on the drive too Diskwarrior was not able to reconstruct the drive in the built in memory available on the computer. Time machine stores millions of files and Diskwarrior apparently wants to keep it all in memory at once. Since my computer has 2GB you would hope that would be enough but apparently not. So that failed. Other utilities seemed to be able to find the files but not restore the directory. I also took it to the apple store they were not able to recover it.
I have to say this is extremely distressing, and hard to believe that a simple accident like this could cost the loss of thousands of pictures. I did send it to a rescue company but that was expensive but I think apple needs to do something about this situation.
On Windows there is a way to disable the write cache for external drives. This is not available for Mac OS X. This would prevent this rather common occurrence of a plug accidentally becoming disengaged when the drive is not in the process of writing. This reduces the odds but I still think apple, in order to become clearly superior, needs a better solution.
I know Apple has experimented with ZFS would this not eliminate this possibility of this kind of disaster? Is this in Snow Leopard desktop? I know they are thinking this is a business customer focused technology but clearly if it can eliminate this kind of thing then I think it is extremely useful to their non server customers. Perhaps there are other ways of dealing with this issue but ZFS is designed to deal with these issues. HFS+ is extremely fragile to disk corruption.
I know my situation is not that uncommon and this is not the first time this has happened to me with an external drive. You would think I had learned. I hate to think of how many other people have had the same thing happen to them.
