is there any way to have my 30,000+ iTunes collection on my iTunes without having it stored on my Mac? I'd like to be able to use the songs off my external hard drive on my iTunes and just plug the hard drive in as n when I needed it. Can I do this?

I'm on Tiger 10.4.11, and the latest iTunes. I have an external hard drive on which I keep all my music files, managed by iTunes. I'm running out of room on that drive. At some point, it is not practical to keep increasing the size of the drive, as the reliability goes down. I'd like to keep my drives to 1TB or so. So, the other solution is to add a second external hard drive, where all new music files can go to. How to do it, so iTunes doesn't freak out? Here's what I'm thinking - could you guys help make it work?
I thought to add the second drive and then in iTunes preferences -->Advanced---> iTunes Music folder location CHANGE to the NEW drive. That way, I'd have iTunes copy all new music to the NEW DRIVE. Question: Now, how do I go about having iTunes reference files on the FIRST drive, so that the Library is up to date, and when I select something to play from the FIRST drive, iTunes knows how to find it?
I transferred all my itunes library to an external hard drive.I had all my songs in itunes and then went to "preferences" and set itunes to look on my external hard drive for my itunes. Then I went to "library" and then "consolidate", and it moved all my library over to my external. I can verify that my songs are all there on my externalHowever, now, itunes won't play any songs of mine. I double click on the song in itunes and it just wont play. View 1 Replies View RelatedI had an external hard drive that started to act wonky and wouldn't mount. I was able to get to mount one last time and transfer the contents over to a new hard drive. Now every time I start iTunes there is a message about checking for gapless playback. I believe there are 82 tracks. It goes by rather fast so it is hard to read each and every title. The ones I have read upon checking I find that the songs have no content. They just don't exist. When you go to control I instead of the track showing the length it shows Not Available.

Only: iTunes doesn't see them there. How can I import songs into iTunes that are already on my hard drive? Just dropping the song files into the right folder doesn't work. iTunes doesn't see them.

Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.
Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUpon adding new songs to my library, iTunes creates a new folder, gives it the same name as the folder "above" and adds the songs I want to add in this new folder. I deleted the whole library. I have a folder "Greatest hits" with about 20 subfolders for each artist. I added the folder "Greatest hits" to the iTunes library, Itunes creates a new folder for every individual artists in the root directory, copies the songs as well but the cover jpg remains in the "old" folder...

I've been trying to figure out how to sort this for ages now, and I just can't get to the bottom of it to save my life. This is the situation. I've just downloaded an album, and it ended up in my Downloads folder, so I moved it to the desktop, then played one of the songs in the album. s soon as I played the song, it opened up in iTunes and then automatically added the song to the music library. I don't want it to do that, I've spent the last couple of hours sorting out my library, adding album artwork, name changes etc and the last thing I need is things getting automatically added to the music library and cluttering and messing things up.

I was under the impression that you could just put new songs right into this folder and they would show up in iTunes. I added a bunch of music files (correct format of course) to this folder and they don't show up. I still have to use "Add to library" and browse to the actual folder and song for it to show up. View 2 Replies View RelatedMacintosh HD is showing 370GB used but it doesn't add up when you look at the Users folder. The largest User account is 24GB, and between Applications, System, and Library there's only another 17GB used. Hence, about 320GB of used drive space is unaccounted for.Â
Disk Utility also shows 500GB drive, 127GB available, 370GB used.Â
I suspect an older User account was deleted but has somehow been retained, albeit hidden. Yet the Deleted Users folder is showing Zero Bytes.Â
Also, the Trash is completely empty, so the missing data is not lurking there.Â
I'd very much like to examine the deleted account and look at the data (particularly photos and movies) that were in there.

I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? Â I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'Â

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got an iPhone & iPad who's filling up quickly mainly due to my audio tracks. They range from 128kbps all the way to ALAC. Currently the audio is consuming 36.9GB but when I select "Convert Higher Bit Rate Songs" to 256kbps, I'm hoping that anything higher (e.g. my 320kbps and ALAC) get converted down and thereby overall consuming less space.
When I select this option, the Audio jumps up to 45.1GB instead. What's going on? Is it upsampling my other 128/160/192kbps tracks up to 256kbps? This option currently seems counterintuitive to me.

I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica. Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house. I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts? Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply? Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician? My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service? How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook. My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?

I was shocked to see that my hard drive was close to full last night when I checked on its capacity. Mainly because I just wiped clean a month ago and reinstalled with the current version of Mavericks.  It would appear that my problem lies within a massive amount of storage used classified as "other". My HD holds 320 GB and of that, "other" is taking up 161 GB along with my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps taking up a combined 120 GB. This leaves me with about 40 GB left of free space.Â
I am unable to pinpoint the location of these "other" files. Totaling up the four subfolders in my HD (System, Library, Users and Applications) only amounts to 120 GB which can be traced back to my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps. This leaves 161 GB floating around used somewhere that I haven't the slightest clue of where it is. I have used Grand Perspective and a disk space analyzer from the app store and they both only recognize 120 GB being used by the hard drive. Â
To make things a little more interesting, when I first noticed this "other" issue, it was taking up 145 GB and over the course of an hour or so after multiple restarts it has worked its way up to the 161 GB it is at now. Is there some type of glitch here?Â
I have tried restarting in Safe Mode to reset any stuck processes, but that didn't work either. I have searched similar problems but most people have found massive log files which they were able to pinpoint using a disk analyzer.Â
With a clean wipe and reset only a month ago, how can the "other" be this big already?Â

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?
