Mac Mini :: What's The Expected Hard Disk Speed For It
Feb 4, 2012
I just bought my first Mac for use in my personal photo studio, a refurbed 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.5ghz. As I was setting up external drives and putting the mini through its paces, I ran a disk benchmark (BlackMagic Disk Speed Test) and got some pretty poor scores.Â
My mini's internal drive hits roughly 40MB/s for both sequential read and sequential write. Am I correct in thinking that this is poor performance even for a 5400 rpm drive? The drive is mostly full; there are 50GB free. Would you recommend that I address this with Applecare? Â

I have a 1.33Ghz 12' Powerbook with 768mb Ram. I'd like to upgrade this. As I understand it, the max RAM for this machine is 1GB. I'm just wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to how much of a speed boost I could expect from this upgrade? is it worth doing? Will it make a difference? Spoke to Apple technician this morning, and I think he said he would take out the 512mb RAM chip and install a 1Gb one - but wouldn't this give me 1.25GB, approximately? I didn't think this machine could take that. He left me a little confused. Have just found out that I can actually max my machine out to 1.25GB for a fairly cheap price. Seems worth doing then, yes? Anybody made a jump from 768 - 1.25 before? Did it make a big difference?

I know that the server version has a 7200 rpm HD, but what about the regular version? Also, is the 500GB upgrade HD on the vanilla model a 7200 version?

i'm about to buy a mac mini as an upgrade to my iMac G5 and want to upgrade the hard disk in it as soon as i get it. I'd like to get a slightly quicker 7200 rpm disk to speed things up but don't know exactly which size it is. I know it's a 2.5inch sata drive but the site i buy my parts from have a number of 2.5inch drives and i don't know which one i need. If you take a look at the link below you'll see they stock 2.5" x 1/8H, 2.5" and 2.5" x 1/6H drives but i don't know if i need just the 2.5" or one of the others. If any of you guys could help me out i'd really appreciate it. [URL:...]

I am the user of Mac mini i7 server. There are 2 internal hard drive. I have had itunes library about 470G. It is nearly the limit of one hard drive. Can I config the Os so 2 Hard drives can be seen as One? I want to keep on saving songs to the same library. As I know the itunes can only treat one file as the music library. Am I correct?

I'm using Data Rescue III on a USB powered hard drive with and it's taking a very long time with my iMac G5... It says 42,291 hours remaining (about 5 years) If I did it on my Mac Pro would it go faster, or is the recovery speed based on the hard drive speed?

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted. After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again. It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â

Every so often my Mac Mini 1.83 Core Duo w/Super Drive will experience a random increase in fan speed...the fan speed increases from 1500rpm to over 5000rpm for a couple minutes, and then will slowly return to normal.During these fan speed-bursts there is no increase/abnormal temperatures. CPU and Ambient temps could be at 40C. System load is also minimal (95% idle, eg).Haven't heard of this as a common problem, but is this fan behavior indicative of any type of problem?

After resetting my Mac mini with the PMU reset it
- runs its fan on full speed
- the front (power) LED does not show anything
- SMC fan control shows "0C" / "000rpm"
Any way how to fix that? I did a PRAM and PMU reset again, but no go.

mine is always around 1800 rpm regardless of internal temps. i spiked both cores of the cpu to 100% for 5 minutes (cputest), and the cpu temp got up to 164F (73C) from an idle temp of 100F (38C), but the fan was still 1800 rpm. i played a bunch of 1080p trailers simultaneously to give the gpu and hdd a workout while transferring a few gigabytes via wifi. fan still stayed around 1800 rpm.
during the 2 hours while the migration assistant was doing its thing, the top of the mac mini got fairly hot. not scorching hot, but noticeably warmer than idle, while the fan was still quiet as usual. i could feel really hot air coming out of the rear vent, but the fan wasn't blowing harder than usual. i'm assuming it was running at 1800 rpm even as the hdd was generating some massive heat. this is very troubling to me. has anyone seen the fan increase in speed as temps rise in the latest mac mini (macmini4,1)?

I have a 2011 mid range mac mini and love the machine, however I have noticed a few things. First off, it seems to be a bit on the slow side when multitasking. I have the standard 4 gigs of ram installed, but running programs like MS Word and Safari at the same time, the machine seems to struggle a bit. Also I have noticed when doing a lot of file transfers via USB, the fan will kick up to high gear for a few minutes and then drop down. Is there something wrong or is this normal? I'm doing a time machine backup of 120Gigs, have safari open and activity monitor open. Activity monitor states 1.16Gigs free, 792MB wired, 961.4MB active, 1.12GB inactive, 2.84GB used. VM size is 150GB, page ins are 962, outs are 380kb, swap used is 10.5MB. Right now the fan seems to have slowed to a mid range mode of some sort and is not in high gear.

I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.Â
This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit.

When is the next updated pro expected?
Should i wait for the pro?
Or should i buy the new air now?
Which is better overall?

I have a 320GB internal hard drive and a 320GB external. Until recently, the "free" space on my external was very similar to the free space on my main drive (about 50% full). But then in the last few weeks, suddenly my external is almost full, yet my internal drive is still around 50%.
All I've done in the last few weeks is add a bunch of music to my iTunes, but that was only 5-10GB of space. I find it strange that Time Machine is using so much more space, even though it does have all the incremental backups.2 questions:
1) Anyone know why it might be using so much more space?
2) Is the 'rule of thumb' that an external drive should be bigger than the internal one, because of all the incremental backups?

Anything to worry about?

I am getting an i7 iMac in the near future (ordered yesterday, won't arrive til Jan. 3rd ) And I am getting it stock with just the 4gigs of ram, and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, but I probably will at some point when prices come down. Anyway, I use photoshop some (not a power user or anything but I use it for some stuff) and I was wondering if you could use a mini sd card as a scratch disk, and if you can, is it a good idea? Thoughts/opinions/comments.
On to my HD question: should I pay apple to upgrade my HD to the 2TB drive? I think I will definitely fill up the 1TB so I'd like the extra space, but would prefer to buy the drive from ifixit or owc or something to save some cash, but the thought of having to remove the huge glass screen with suction cups and disconnecion the LCD seems a little daunting so I was wondering if I should just save myself the hassle and get the upgrade done by mac (it'd be $225 instead of $250 because I get the student discount) Of course I'd lose out on the 1TB HD that I could later stick in to an external HD enclosure, so its a pretty big hit in terms of cash.
From watching the teardown on ifixit changing he HD looks like it could be a little tricky, but I'd like some input from you guys. I am pretty tech savy (former PC user so I've replaced a lot of components like ram, video cards, HDs, ec cetera) but getting past the wall of glass is daunting, but I may just be hyping it up, so I wanted some input.
Third and finally, I got the wired keyboard because I wanted a # pad but I just found out my old Logitech G13 has mac drivers so I was thinking of switching to the wireless one just so I could have a wireless mouse + keyboard for when I want to watch a movie or something from further away, though ideally I think I'd prefer a keyboard with a built in track pad or track ball, but I don't really want to fork out the cash for it now. So is there any advantage of the wired numeric apple keyboard compared to the Logitech one? I can still control media, I have a remote, and it can do expose and screens and all that good stuff. But as always I wanted to make sure I wasn't over looking anything.

I realize the L2 cache is half the size and the CPU is a bit slower, but if each machine had 4 gigs of ram, would they be more or less comparable in performance (aside from the GPU)?
Also, how does the Mini fare with Vista in BootCamp / Parallels?

In Snow Leopard (and in Leopard before it), when you use the screen capture (to clipboard) key combination: SHIFT+(apple key)+Control+4 to capture part of the screen to the clipboard, it doesn't paste into many applications.
For example, using an OpenOffice document, the Edit...Paste menu is not highlighted (after doing a screen capture to clipboard), yet, I can paste the copied clipboard screen shot to Text Edit.
Since OpenOffice and other programs I've tried (including Thunderbird) do display graphics in their programs, why don't they accept the clipboard contents from the Mac screen capture program?
Thunderbird also will NOT accept a Mac screen shot clipboard "Paste".
What's going on here?
This lack of functionality breaks the idea of "cut and paste", which always works as expected in, gulp, Windows.
Snagit, for Windows, was wonderful, but I can't find anything to even come close for the Mac. (Of course, I'd be happy with just cut and paste working as expected for simple screen shots.)

I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks now as it's time for me to come back to Mac. I've been a PC gamer for a long time, but used a Mac when I was a journalist. I want to start writing again and was considering a netbook, then realized the Mac is what I want again.
Question: I have researched several forums, rumours and checked the 'don't buy now' page for buying recommendations. However, my real question is regarding typical pricing when the "new hotness" is released. Is it typical for the price of the new models to be higher than the current pricing? If I go out and buy a MacBook Pro next week, I don't mind if it turns out that I could have saved a hundred bucks or two when they start clearing out the "old" models in refurbs, but I don't want it to end up that I could have waited a week and paid the same price for a lot more....................

When using Safari I have begun to notice this box appearing as I try to reach any website: "Safari is no longer responding because of a script on the webpage and then it lists what ever web page I have tried to reach. It then asks me if I want to "stop" the script or allow it to continue. I must "continue" it in order to reach my web page/ If I press "stop" it just keeps coming back and back and I can't continue. What is wrong with my computer or Sarari or both?
