Mac Pro :: Tried A 5870 In An 08 Mac Pro?
Aug 10, 2010I'm wondering if anyone has taken the plunge and tried the 5870 or 5770 in an 08 Mac Pro? I know it's early, but I thought I'd ask anyway, I am eagerly awaiting the answer!

View 10 RepliesI was what kind of FPS do you get in WoW with mac pro 5.1 and 5870 - what wow settings, resolution and how many monitors (size).
The FPS are generally ok on my mac with high settings in windowed (decent with ultra) but I'm getting weird FPS drops when I quickly pan around, generally out in the open. I've copied the WoW game folder from my old mac pro 1,1 - wondering if that has anything to do with performance. Would I be better off downloading the game client again?
i have a 2008 mac pro 2xQuad 2.8 GHz 4GB RAM
I just upgraded from nvidia 285 to ati 5870. The FPS in Starcraft 2
did not go up. Its almost exactly the same.
I was suprised so i check the CPU usage. Its at 115% (of 800, 100 per core)
spred out over the cores. So the CPU doesnt seem to be the problem. There are over 1 GB free of RAM,little disk and network usage.
I run 10.6.6 it was just reinstalled before the upgrade.
No other download avalible.i tried reinstalling SC2, same.
I have a GTX 285 currently... I'm thinking of getting the new 27"... Would the new card be an upgrade?
View 10 Replies View Relatedanyone think this is possible? I'd check the specs of the card myself but they haven't listed it in the store yet afaik. I'd really like to pick one up, no doubt it'll out perform my GTX 285.

This is the 06 MP. It has the 667 mhz ram . Can it handle the ati radeon 5870 1 ghz video card? I can get this MP for $899 on z boxing day sale. I would get it if I know I can upgrade the card
Looking for some info on flashing a 5870 with an EFI rom. I see references here of people doing it, but no dedicated thread like there was for the 4870 and 4890.
What is the best card to buy, where do you get the roms, and what are the gotchya's?

We need a Rom! Lets flash this shitznizzle!

View 13 Replies View RelatedShuffling through various take out containers, I realized that the most pungent stack was resting up a chunk of plastic.
To my surprise, the chunk was my forgotten 5870.
When I bought it last fall, I fervently believed that I would be hurling through Halo 1 at death tempting speeds by now.
Instead, it fights off dust bunnies.
I thought that maybe we should get a glimpse into our 5870 flashing future.
Scraping off the Kung Pao Crusties, I tossed the nearly antiquated card into my Mac Pro to see what I could see.
Still some oddball mystery card in 10.6.3. ATI card, device id of 6898.
So I decided to PRACTICE writing a ROM for it. I KNOW that I won't shortly be busting out into a heavy breathing Doom 3 session via the 5870. I just wanted a glimpse at the hurdles that we will (hopefully) soon be leaping past.
So I took the EFI part of Mac 4870 ROM and had a look at it. My brother once heard a crack addict say that the 5870 and 4870 are kissing cousins. I decided that lacking a 5870 EFI, I would use the 4870 one. I would just update the device id, give it the fixrom.py kiss of accuracy and flash my way to heaven.
First shock was that there wasn't room between 5870 BIOS and Lookup table for GDDR5. (him...like 4870.....)
So I had to scoouch the MCUC table down to give the 49152 for Mac 4870 EFI. Once I did that, I ran out of space about 4K before ROM was done.
SO...IF the EFI 5870 portion is as big as 4870 EFI....and IF most 5870 ROMs are as big as XFX one...we have a problem...AGAIN.
The 128K EEPROM on my 5870 wasn't going to hold the IMAGINARY Mac ROM. So I tossed a 256K chip on it and tried again. And this is where the SURPRISE came in. In years of flashing cards, I haven't seen this one before. I thought perhaps my ROM was horribly mishapen. I updated to Atiflash 3.79. I even tried flashing it with the only other LARGER than 128K ROM I knew, the MacGTX285 ROM. Same result.
So, who knows DOS or ATIFLASH or whatever this is well enough to tell us what it means?
Again, I emphasize, THERE IS NOT A MAC 5870 YET !!! I am being silly and trying to anticipate and solve the early flash problems BEFORE WE GET THE ROM OR DRIVERS !!!
Sadly, our respite from "file too big for EEPROM" seems to have ended. Meanwhile, I would like to see ATIFLASH put a larger than 128K file on my EEPROM. What is wrong?
I am attaching the original XFX file along with my bastardized "mac" one. Anybody?
Shew... I currently have the 4870 and am looking to upgrade to the 5870 for two reason:
1. I have duel ACD and need the dual mini display
2. I am an avid After Effects guru and need all the punch I can get (yes i know the QaudroFX, but it's just not worth it and they never update them).
How do you all think they will compare performance for price? Any early reviews comparing them both on the PC at least?
I am considering a new Mac Pro - and though i have run thru lots of forum discussions here - I have not found one that discusses the advantages of getting the 5870 over the 5770 for a new buyer.
Can anyone help me understand how the 5870 might improve the performance of the Mac Pro when working in:
1 - in general
2 - Handbrake/iMovie/itunes/MPEG Streamclip, etc.
3 - FCP, CS5
Is there anywhere to download the separate driver for the mac version of the ati 5870 yet other than software update or the new DVD?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSeen this discussion scattered throughout threads but I wanted to ask it directly here. What uses could really take advantage of the 5870? I've seen gaming benchmarks (5870 blows the 5770 away) but not much else. Specifically, I'm primarily using Aperture and some light gaming. But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).
It might be to soon but has anyone successfully put a ati 5870 or 5850 in a Mac Pro to work under windows? And if so does it start up with out problems with a mac gpu still in it. Assuming base mac gpu so no power connectors are used. I have a 2009 MP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWill the 5870 work with the '09 pros? I would certainly buy a used 09' then since it's only a minor speed bump and nothing else.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was planning on getting a hexcore MP with the ATI 5870 card and three 27inch Apple Cinema Displays, I saw that the card has two mini display ports but apples page suggests that you can only put one of these cards in the machine. View 24 Replies View RelatedCan someone explain to me what the differences between these two graphics cards are? My main use will be with a 6-core Mac Pro and a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I'd like to watch Netflix/Huly Plus full screen. I will not be doing any video editing. I will be doing some audio editing and the basic Apple iLife applications.
What are the pros/cons of the 5770 vs the 5870? I know the 5870 uses more power and I've also heard it's louder.
I borrowed a used 2006 Mac Pro from [URL[. I installed the Radeon HD 5870 from our Westmere 6-core along with its boot drive. It booted up the first time no problemo. I tried the Mini DisplayPorts with and without the MDP to DVI adapter. Works fine. Right now I'm running game benchmarks on a 24" LED Cinema display plugged directly into the MDP. OWC techies have the 5770 running in their 2006 Mac Pro but could not get the 5870 to boot -- black screen. They are investigating what's different about their 2006 from the one I'm using.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a GT120 and a GTX285 running one ACD 30" and two ACD 20"... I'm selling my 30" to get the all new ACD 27"... I'm also thinking of selling off the two 20's as well... Does this also mean that I need to sell my GT120 and GTX285 and either get a 5770 or 5870 to make the ACD 27" work?
What are my options? I know the 5870 is not available... I'm not a big gamer or graphics designer, but love the best!
I'm still contemplating over here.. Close to hitting the order button. I was thinking about Sandy Bridge but I dont see any other benefits besides just a bit higher clock as to the current lineup. I figured a more worthy wait for an upgrade would be the one after sandy bridge.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI currently have an ATI 4870 card in this Mac Pro (late 2009). I use this rig for heavy Adobe Creative Suite 5 and FCP work. I use dual Apple LED 27" monitors.I'm about to order the 5870 graphics card upgrade from Apple, but before I do, is it possible to run TWO 5870 graphics cards? I am running into conflicting information and trying to get a definitive answer. If yes, do I need additional power cables and if so, which ones?
Alternatively, I've read the 5970 card is essentially two 5870 GPUs on one chip. Will this be a better solution?I also want the cards to be drop and play ready/natively supported. As I rely on this computer for business, I'm not interested in continually chasing down third-party drivers.
I have two Apple 5870s on hand, a modular power supply on order as well as a crossfire bridge connector. I am taking it upon myself to rearrange the mac pro with two 5870s and test whether or not crossfire will work under Windows 7.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI decided I'd try my old crt monitor on the new 5870 (figured it'd be nice to hold toolbars in). I hooked it up via the mini display port->vga adaptor (apple branded) I use for my mbp, the issue is that I cannot get it to work on osx, and I got it it work once on windows... it works just peachy on my mbp though.
Is there any known issue with vga output on the mdp? It isn't mission critical to get it to work so I can leave it at that but could this be a sign there is something wrong with my mdps? (I use the dvi link for my main lcd)...
I've been considering buying one of the new Radeon video card kits and throwing it in my 2006 Mac Pro. I would prefer the 5870 but for the most part, the opinion online is that it wouldn't work. However, I came across this link: [URL:...] So what gives? How did barefeats pull it off? Could it have been using the boot drive really played such a role? I kept reading it couldn't be done due to the lack of EFI64.
Model Name:Mac Pro
Model Identifier:MacPro1,1
Processor Name:Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:3 GHz
Number Of Processors:2
Total Number Of Cores:4
L2 Cache (per processor):4 MB
Memory:4 GB
Bus Speed:1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version:MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version (system):1.7f10
As I am waiting for Bare feats to have fun with the Quadro, some preliminary thoughts might be fun to think about.
- The Quadro 4000 is supported on the Mac Pro '08, the Radeon 5870 is not.
- X-Plane 9: the Radeon 5870 is not faster than the 4870 in the '08 Mac Pro. Maybe the Quadro 4000 will be faster?
- 2 GB VRAM on the Quadro... any chance gaming will benefit?
- Usually the "Pro-3D" card loses to good consumer 3D cards in gaming. Will this be true this time too?
Finally got my Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X hooked up to my 2009 MP... and been trying to get it set up so I don't have to pull the old GT120 GPU out of the PCIe slot every time I want to boot up in Windows Vista x64 on the 5870. The GT120 still boots up beautifully to OSX with the 5870 in, but I can't seem to get the 5870 as default on WinVista64. My guess is it has something to do with the EFI, as I get the gray "pre-apple" screen when I boot with the GT120, but not with the 5870. The 5870 only starts to send out a signal once the Windows loading screen shows up.
I'm trying to completely (or at least effectively) disable the GT120 in Boot Camp/Vista x64.
Is it even possible without a BIOS?
I've already tried disabling the GT120 "Display Adapter" under Device Manager.
