Feb 5, 2010As a prospective 27" i7 iMac owner, I've been following the thread on the yellow tinge issues for awhile now. Hoping that Apple had addressed the issue, I finally took the plunge and ordered my system on 1/20 and just got my shipping notification yesterday.
As I wait for it to arrive, I wanted to share some thoughts that came to mind after I read this review of a Samsung LED television a few days ago:
Getting the LED white light to travel from the edges to behind the LCD panel requires an optical wave guide that twists the light 90 degrees. This is no easy feat to perfect and Samsung hasn't managed to completely nail it: screen uniformity wasn't perfect when viewing a full white screen test pattern. On rare occasions, when viewing content with white areas at the top or bottom edge or a blue sky, this non-uniformity gave the screen edge a schmutzy (dirty) appearance. If this is an issue for a large TV then it may also be a problem for the iMac's 27-inch display. This got me thinking about what a Gizmodo reader mentioned last week in this article:
I now am fairly certain that the yellowing of the display is a manufacturing defect involving the distance between a layer of material used to diffuse the LED backlight and the LCD panel. To show a perfectly even color, this light scattering panel has to be absolutely flat and free of any warping, kinking, or thickness defects. It is this layer that I believe is at fault, and causes the color to drift and give the perception of yellow stripes, fields, and corners.
This would be absolutely consistent with the reports of horizontal and vertical stripes (a vertical or horizontal kink) or corners (a bad tuck). I believe these defects may not appear in the factory. Rather, with the rough handling the monitors receive when shipped this layer gets knocked out of alignment.Something to think about with the iMac is that it's shipping weight and bulk is a whole lot heavier than a typical monitor and the LCD panel is wedged between and fixed to metal, glass and the logic board and components behind it. Now I've seen how the FedEx and UPS guys handle packages coming to my house and office...factor in a trip all the way from Shanghai for a mega parcel and I'm sure there's a lot rough handling that the iMac has to endure. I think it's entirely possible that the backlight diffuser is getting warped in transit, perhaps at certain contact points like the lower corners. Heat from the system behind might make the problem appear worse over time as some users have commented.
If this is the case, then it would explain why some folks are getting their 5th and 6th yellow-tinged iMacs whereas others are fine. Apple could do all the QA in the world on the factory floor but it wouldn't help if the problem occurs during shipment.
Bottom line is that this would be a serious product design flaw which would take alot longer than a few weeks to fix and retool for. The only other solution would be for Apple to replace the LCD panels for those machines on which the diffuser was warped during shipment, which appears to be the direction they are heading.

Apr 22, 2009i ordered an 4870 card for my mac pro about the time it got out, march 3rd. Shipping date was set to april 21st. on that date it jumped to may 19th. anyone got their cards, or got an earlier shipping date? i live in norway btw. maybe that has something to do with it.

Nov 28, 2010I was what kind of FPS do you get in WoW with mac pro 5.1 and 5870 - what wow settings, resolution and how many monitors (size).
The FPS are generally ok on my mac with high settings in windowed (decent with ultra) but I'm getting weird FPS drops when I quickly pan around, generally out in the open. I've copied the WoW game folder from my old mac pro 1,1 - wondering if that has anything to do with performance. Would I be better off downloading the game client again?

I just upgraded from nvidia 285 to ati 5870. The FPS in Starcraft 2
did not go up. Its almost exactly the same.
I was suprised so i check the CPU usage.Its at 115% (of 800, 100 per core)
spred out over the cores. So the CPU doesnt seem to be the problem.There are over 1 GB free of RAM,little disk and network usage.
I run 10.6.6 it was just reinstalled before the upgrade.
No other download avalible.i tried reinstalling SC2, same.

Apr 6, 2010Shuffling through various take out containers, I realized that the most pungent stack was resting up a chunk of plastic.
To my surprise, the chunk was my forgotten 5870.
When I bought it last fall, I fervently believed that I would be hurling through Halo 1 at death tempting speeds by now.
Instead, it fights off dust bunnies.
I thought that maybe we should get a glimpse into our 5870 flashing future.
Scraping off the Kung Pao Crusties, I tossed the nearly antiquated card into my Mac Pro to see what I could see.
Still some oddball mystery card in 10.6.3. ATI card, device id of 6898.
So I decided to PRACTICE writing a ROM for it. I KNOW that I won't shortly be busting out into a heavy breathing Doom 3 session via the 5870. I just wanted a glimpse at the hurdles that we will (hopefully) soon be leaping past.
So I took the EFI part of Mac 4870 ROM and had a look at it. My brother once heard a crack addict say that the 5870 and 4870 are kissing cousins. I decided that lacking a 5870 EFI, I would use the 4870 one. I would just update the device id, give it the fixrom.py kiss of accuracy and flash my way to heaven.
First shock was that there wasn't room between 5870 BIOS and Lookup table for GDDR5. (him...like 4870.....)
So I had to scoouch the MCUC table down to give the 49152 for Mac 4870 EFI. Once I did that, I ran out of space about 4K before ROM was done.
SO...IF the EFI 5870 portion is as big as 4870 EFI....and IF most 5870 ROMs are as big as XFX one...we have a problem...AGAIN.
The 128K EEPROM on my 5870 wasn't going to hold the IMAGINARY Mac ROM. So I tossed a 256K chip on it and tried again. And this is where the SURPRISE came in. In years of flashing cards, I haven't seen this one before. I thought perhaps my ROM was horribly mishapen. I updated to Atiflash 3.79. I even tried flashing it with the only other LARGER than 128K ROM I knew, the MacGTX285 ROM. Same result.
So, who knows DOS or ATIFLASH or whatever this is well enough to tell us what it means?
Again, I emphasize, THERE IS NOT A MAC 5870 YET !!! I am being silly and trying to anticipate and solve the early flash problems BEFORE WE GET THE ROM OR DRIVERS !!!
Sadly, our respite from "file too big for EEPROM" seems to have ended. Meanwhile, I would like to see ATIFLASH put a larger than 128K file on my EEPROM. What is wrong?
I am attaching the original XFX file along with my bastardized "mac" one. Anybody?

Jul 27, 2010Shew... I currently have the 4870 and am looking to upgrade to the 5870 for two reason:
1. I have duel ACD and need the dual mini display
2. I am an avid After Effects guru and need all the punch I can get (yes i know the QaudroFX, but it's just not worth it and they never update them).
How do you all think they will compare performance for price? Any early reviews comparing them both on the PC at least?

Mac Pro :: Can You Run A Radeon 5770 And 5870 Together
Dec 29, 2010I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22� monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27� screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but I�ve also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra �120 on it. The 5770 is �80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldn�t find a lot of info on the subject. I�m not really computer literate but I�m willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).

Aug 26, 2010I borrowed a used 2006 Mac Pro from [URL[. I installed the Radeon HD 5870 from our Westmere 6-core along with its boot drive. It booted up the first time no problemo. I tried the Mini DisplayPorts with and without the MDP to DVI adapter. Works fine. Right now I'm running game benchmarks on a 24" LED Cinema display plugged directly into the MDP. OWC techies have the 5770 running in their 2006 Mac Pro but could not get the 5870 to boot -- black screen. They are investigating what's different about their 2006 from the one I'm using.

Sep 27, 2010I have a GT120 and a GTX285 running one ACD 30" and two ACD 20"... I'm selling my 30" to get the all new ACD 27"... I'm also thinking of selling off the two 20's as well... Does this also mean that I need to sell my GT120 and GTX285 and either get a 5770 or 5870 to make the ACD 27" work?
