Mac Pro :: Using GTX285 To 5770 Or 5870 For ACD 27"
Sep 27, 2010
I have a GT120 and a GTX285 running one ACD 30" and two ACD 20"... I'm selling my 30" to get the all new ACD 27"... I'm also thinking of selling off the two 20's as well... Does this also mean that I need to sell my GT120 and GTX285 and either get a 5770 or 5870 to make the ACD 27" work?
What are my options? I know the 5870 is not available... I'm not a big gamer or graphics designer, but love the best!

Seen this discussion scattered throughout threads but I wanted to ask it directly here. What uses could really take advantage of the 5870? I've seen gaming benchmarks (5870 blows the 5770 away) but not much else. Specifically, I'm primarily using Aperture and some light gaming. But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.

I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).

Can someone explain to me what the differences between these two graphics cards are? My main use will be with a 6-core Mac Pro and a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I'd like to watch Netflix/Huly Plus full screen. I will not be doing any video editing. I will be doing some audio editing and the basic Apple iLife applications.
What are the pros/cons of the 5770 vs the 5870? I know the 5870 uses more power and I've also heard it's louder.

I recently sold my XFX 4870 in anticipation of the new cards that will be coming to the MP's soon. I understand that the question will not be answered until the new MP's come out and someone can extract the BIOS. But I wanted to start a thread of which cards (Brand, Model, Rev #) works with our MP's (looks like 2008 and later).

seeing as there's at least 3 threads on this topic, and I've been posting in all of them, I figured I'd create this thread to help consolidate the info we know so far. Please note, this is for *OFFICIAL* Apple Radeon 5770/5870 cards, NOT flashed cards. I'll also try to keep it updated with more info as it comes in. Also, feel free to chime in if something is wrong.
- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's
- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter
- UPDATE 2: Rob-ART says OWC got a 30" working on MDP of 5870. (post)- UPDATE 3: grey17 says the 5770 works in 2009 Mac Pro (link)- 5870 and 5770 work in SOME 2006 Mac Pro's:
- Rob-ART from Barefeats says it works.
- OWC says the 5770 only works with DVI works flawlessly on 2006/2007 (MDP and DVI) (post) (confirmed by netkas), and the 5870 doesn't work at all. (link).......

I have a 2008 MP 8 core and I want to get a new video card, I have a 8800 in it now, and I need a more powerful card for Win 7 for Flight Simulator. I have 12 GB of ram in the system and I am going to add a 256 SSD for Win 7 and use a WD raptor drive for the Flight Sim. Which is the BETTER video card for the windows side ( dont care about it in OSX ) The GtX285 has 1 GB ram on board and the ATI only has 512mb.. ( like the 8800 ) I dont want to get the GTX 400 series and make it work I rather go with the 4870 or GTX285.

I CAN get access to them, but they are in Edit Bays at a friend's Production Office...and the Editors keep weird hours.....and they are wired in with lots of extra video/audio/disk drive stuff that I have to disconnect/move....and if one died or I caused bad Hard Drive corruption I would be SHOT ON SIGHT......etc.
So, if there is a video card enthusiast in Hollywood,CA area who has an EFI-64 Machine and would like to be part of this experiment, PM me.
FYI...there is a good chance this will work...on the other hand, there is also a good chance that Apple/Nvidia/EVGA placed an additional STOP to flashing and upon boot we will see a lovely black screen.
Whats in it for you? Immortal, undying glory ! A beer ! And when I figure out full process, I will make one for you with GTX285 you bring me. gratis
I have removed the 128K chip it came with and installed a 256K chip. I then flashed Mac EFI ROM onto it. On my first Gen it runs exactly as before. Boots into OSX with help of Netkas Injector Package, but not until desktop. (also requires additional Nvidia card)
It appears to be ignoring the Mac EFI due to it being 64 instead of the 32 it "requires".

Don't get me wrong, the (apple-shipped) 8800GT has never given me a moment's worth of problem but it would seem that if there is OpenCL support for the GTX285 in SL next month, it may be worth it to drop the coin and get this card (I'll take it as a business expense).
Has anyone heard or seen something about officially supporting this card? When I looked on Apple's website under SL tech specs, this card isn't listed.

I have a 2008 MP which I ordered with the 8800 GT video card. I decided it was time to upgrade so ordered the nVidia GTX285 for the Mac from [URL]. Installed easy (didn't need the drivers as Snow Leopard already had them) except for the installation of the power cables on the MoBo (fat fingers need not apply ).
So far I like it. I am waiting on Modern Warfare 2 so that will be a good test.
It will be interesting to see how it handles the demands of Crysis2 when it ships after Christmas. The original game was very demanding (don't know why that was so as I just finished Far Cry 2 and the 8800 handled it easy and the graphics were just as good as Crysis).

"Test "Mule" was the Nehalem Mac Pro 8-core running at 2.93GHz (12G of RAM)."
From what I understand, the above configuration could actually slow down frame-rate because it is unnecessary extra hardware?
Would frame-rate improve slightly by using a Quad-Core Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM, or am I not understanding?
(And assuming this is on OSX, but you can answer both ways).

I am considering the move from the GTX 285 to the ATI 5770. The reasoning behind this is that I'm wanting to change from a Dell 30" to the new 27" Cinema display. And obviously the 285 won't connect to this monitor. My biggest concern is the potential drop in performance. Having said that the Most intensive graphics application I have is Call of Duty 4: MW. This is at the moment at least. If better game come out that are more graphics hungry things may change, but I can still upgrade down the track. I'm really struggling to find any comparison between these two cards.

I was what kind of FPS do you get in WoW with mac pro 5.1 and 5870 - what wow settings, resolution and how many monitors (size).
The FPS are generally ok on my mac with high settings in windowed (decent with ultra) but I'm getting weird FPS drops when I quickly pan around, generally out in the open. I've copied the WoW game folder from my old mac pro 1,1 - wondering if that has anything to do with performance. Would I be better off downloading the game client again?

i have a 2008 mac pro 2xQuad 2.8 GHz 4GB RAM
I just upgraded from nvidia 285 to ati 5870. The FPS in Starcraft 2
did not go up. Its almost exactly the same.
I was suprised so i check the CPU usage. Its at 115% (of 800, 100 per core)
spred out over the cores. So the CPU doesnt seem to be the problem. There are over 1 GB free of RAM,little disk and network usage.
I run 10.6.6 it was just reinstalled before the upgrade.
No other download avalible.i tried reinstalling SC2, same.

I just installed an ATI 5770 in a 2008 8-core MacPro and was expecting at least some speed improvement over my existing 2600XT. I had read online that Aperture 3 used OpenCL, which is supposed to supported by the 5770. When I didn't see much improvement, I started up atMonitor to see if I can see any GPU% activity. Nothing. Flatline. Does anyone know if atMonitor supports showing GPU activity with this card?

I've recently got Apple's HD5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for my Mac Pro (2008 / 3,1) - I previously used a 8800GT which died. As I also use it for some gaming, I have a HD5970 in there to run DX11 games smoothly on my 30" Cinema Display. However, since I installed the graphics update from software update to give drivers to my HD5770, the machine kernel panics when starting up with the HD5970 installed.
This wasn't an issue previously: the two cards coexisted peacefully (the geforce and the HD5770 without drivers). My guess is that OS X tries to load drivers for the HD5970 and kernel panics on this phase. The HD5970 is installed in slot 1, the HD5770 is installed in slot 2. Any workarounds? Could I perhaps edit the device ID of the HD5970 into a kext to get it ignored by the system? Does the slot layout matter at all?

I have a few question for people who have upgraded to the ATI 5770 form the 8800GT.
It looks looks the install is pretty straight forward. But what type of performance upgrade can I expect? I use manly Photoshop, Lightroom and X-plane. Are there any hidden got-you's?

I'm upgrading my 2008 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770. I intend to connect it to two 23" LED monitors with DVI interfaces. Can I use one of the DVI ports on the HD 5770 and one of the Mini DisplayPorts with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter or am I better off using both MiniDisplay Ports?

I've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.
Here is my proposed setup:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. So Backup plan 1: DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) MDP 2 not used.
Backup plan 2:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device, VGA input via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter
Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter
Info:
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Looking for some info on flashing a 5870 with an EFI rom. I see references here of people doing it, but no dedicated thread like there was for the 4870 and 4890.
What is the best card to buy, where do you get the roms, and what are the gotchya's?
