Mac Pro :: How To Know About Flash 4890
May 18, 2009
I haven't seen anymore discussion on this, did we ever get the 4890 flashed and working as a native card in a mac pro? I'd really like to buy one and do this, I know there is the natit fix but that is a no-go for me as I need the boot screen on my mac. I also need dual DVI ports as I have dual 23" cinemas.

I have read the 3 or 4 discussions on flashing the 4890. I just ordered one and plan on doing a clean install of snow leopard and installing the card at the end of the week. However, some of the links from rapid share don't appear to be working. Can some one point me to where these files have moved and are there an snow leopard specific files?

5870 Mac Edition, I was considering flashing a PC 4870 or 4890. I had been browsing through Cindori's first post in the 4870/4890 flashing thread, and noticed that the cards shown in the pictures are becoming very hard to come by.

I am excited waiting for my new Canon 7D and plan to be shooting a lot of 720P 60FPS videos. I can see the need to be converting them in different formats to publish on Youtube and Vimeo.
I got a Mac Pro 1,1 9GB Mem, Snow Leopard with ATI 4890 and was wondering if the ATI 4890 would be doing the re-encoding job better then the ElGato Turbo.264 HD - H.264 Encoder.

I've been lurking for far too long...so here goes my first post! So I've read through the whole of Cindori's thread titled "Ultimate Thread: 4890 in Mac Pro", trying to figure out exactly which Radeon 4890 would be a compatible and reliable solution for flashing to work on Snow Leopard 10.6.1, Mac Pro 1,1. To my disappointment, I'm more confused now than I was when I first started reading the thread. Why? because cards have gone through revisions and what was working then, now no longer works or has problems. Example: Sapphire cards seem to be what to look for since that was what Cindori used, but "newer" Sapphire cards, even though they may look like reference cards, don't seem to work; older XFX cards worked (and only ZDFC from what I understand), but newer revisions no longer work, etc.

So back in the days, if u had windows based computer and wanted to use the imac screen with that computer, u could get 4890 (which is out of stock) or the 5970 which is pretty expensive. So im wondering if this has been solved by ati in newer driver updates, and im wondering if anyone with a radeon 5870/5850 dekstop gpu and confirm this working with a imac 27" screen.

With the recent Steam for Mac release, I have been thinking about getting a new video card again, however I am looking for reasons to get it. So I am just wondering will I see any speed improvements if I used a better video card on Aperture 3 (running 32bit because I use nik software)? I also use FCP, Photoshop quite often.

Apparently, Apple is seeding updated Graphics drivers .
Can any of our GPU gurus hazard a guess at whether these will benefit those of us with flashed cards, or will they more likely brick them, or do we just not know until we test them?
I don't want to get my hopes up for improvements that might never happen!

I want to create a simple flash movie (I don't yet own or know how to use Adobe Flash). Pretty flowers in the background, inspirational music, passages from the Bible or something fading in an out... you know the schtick. Maybe convert it to a screen saver.

I'm trying to read news sites and my eye is distracted by things bouncing around in adverts. It's even worse when they're playing obnoxious sounds until you click the mute button in them. Therefore I just thought I'd let people know about this wonderful piece of software. I've seen it mentioned a few times here but even if this thread only helps a few people I think it'll be worth it:[URL]Not only does it hide these horrific insults to humanity (ok a bit strong perhaps), it actually prevents them loading, therefore your pages load quicker! And it's completely unobtrusive! If you want to watch flash file, simply click on in.

watch Youtube vids using H.264 MP4 codec instead of flash. As most of the videos I watch are recent uploads (last year or so) they have SQ and HQ H.264 version available. As Flash eats up system resources worse then anything I can think of at the moment, I am trying to find a way to force the videos to play in MP4 format. I know ClicktoFlash has this option for Safari, but I am trying to find out if there are any other ways to do this without user input (for playlists). I use YousableTubeFixURL for Chrome and Firefox which has the option to do this, but no matter what option I choose, it always plays using Flash. I know FF doesnt have a built in MP4 player, but I though I heard of a way to get VLC or Quicktime to play it.

I have upgraded from a OX 2.8 to 3.9. I now have to use two browsers to use the internet. Safari to have access to my yahoo mail account, and fire fox 2.020 to load information on my business website.
I have not been able to use shockwave flash or flash player on the up load. When I was using OSX 2.8 I could add pictures to my business website and etc., I had no problem viewing the slide show I had on my website, other than the system was a little slow. I have an ibook G3 128 +512 ram, total. 900 mhz, 12. inches and white case. The systems requirements indicate that I need to upgrade to tiger OSX 4.0
I know there are some issues using Fire Fox with OSX 3.9. When ever I tried to access my yahoo mail from Fire fox, the system would crash.
Other than getting a new laptop, any suggestions? I tried to down load Shock wave from the old apps web site called Camino. I get an error message that the plug in cannot be loaded sussfully I have tried load flash Player 7.09, but get a message that it can not load. Could this be because of not enough space on the drive. Maybe I am not loading it correctly. Shouldn't I be able to click it to install it in the right place without having to try the different files.

It seems to come and go with the wind. I've loaded, reloaded, clean loaded, tried everything to get it to work right. For awhile, embedded videos would redirect me to YouTube. Now that Apple has scrubbed Flash clean of insecurities, I can't get it to run at all. I have 10.6.5 on a Macbook Pro.

I was starting up my Mac Pro this evening in a dark room and noticed a flash of red light for half a second upon pressing the power button. Being curious of this I shut down the computer took off the side panel and tried powering it up again. I saw 4 lights on Memory Riser B flash on for half a second then disappear. In System Profiler it shows all my ram is 'OK' but I have never witnessed this flash of red light before. Is this a normal thing to occur when powering up a Mac Pro late 08 model or should I contact Apple over this?

Here's a strange one. Got a new flash drive. My first step, always, is to use disk utility to erase and reformat the flash drive into FAT32, single partition.
But when I plug in my latest flash drive into my Macs, I see the U3 Install Disc icon on my desktop.
What gives? How can U3 still be on it after a reformat? More importantly, how do I get rid of it?

Before I start, here are my late-08 MBP stats:
2.5GHz C2D
4GB RAM
512MB 8600 GT
OK, with those relevant stats out of the way, my MBP will usually sit anywhere from 120-125 F just browsing with iTunes playing in the background, Mail open and maybe Parallels. However, I after letting my sister use my computer and her going on Farmville in Facebook, I noticed it was running up around 140-150 and a couple times reached 160-163 (these numbers are via two different temp apps).
When I looked, there were 3 flash programs going on...two pop-ups for a seedy cam site and Farmville. Closed the two pop-ups and the temps dropped back to 147-150. Once Farmville was closed, temps went back to normal. My question is it normal for flash applications to make the laptop run so hot? Is there some sort of update I might need?

Shuffling through various take out containers, I realized that the most pungent stack was resting up a chunk of plastic.
To my surprise, the chunk was my forgotten 5870.
When I bought it last fall, I fervently believed that I would be hurling through Halo 1 at death tempting speeds by now.
Instead, it fights off dust bunnies.
I thought that maybe we should get a glimpse into our 5870 flashing future.
Scraping off the Kung Pao Crusties, I tossed the nearly antiquated card into my Mac Pro to see what I could see.
Still some oddball mystery card in 10.6.3. ATI card, device id of 6898.
So I decided to PRACTICE writing a ROM for it. I KNOW that I won't shortly be busting out into a heavy breathing Doom 3 session via the 5870. I just wanted a glimpse at the hurdles that we will (hopefully) soon be leaping past.
So I took the EFI part of Mac 4870 ROM and had a look at it. My brother once heard a crack addict say that the 5870 and 4870 are kissing cousins. I decided that lacking a 5870 EFI, I would use the 4870 one. I would just update the device id, give it the fixrom.py kiss of accuracy and flash my way to heaven.
First shock was that there wasn't room between 5870 BIOS and Lookup table for GDDR5. (him...like 4870.....)
So I had to scoouch the MCUC table down to give the 49152 for Mac 4870 EFI. Once I did that, I ran out of space about 4K before ROM was done.
SO...IF the EFI 5870 portion is as big as 4870 EFI....and IF most 5870 ROMs are as big as XFX one...we have a problem...AGAIN.
The 128K EEPROM on my 5870 wasn't going to hold the IMAGINARY Mac ROM. So I tossed a 256K chip on it and tried again. And this is where the SURPRISE came in. In years of flashing cards, I haven't seen this one before. I thought perhaps my ROM was horribly mishapen. I updated to Atiflash 3.79. I even tried flashing it with the only other LARGER than 128K ROM I knew, the MacGTX285 ROM. Same result.
So, who knows DOS or ATIFLASH or whatever this is well enough to tell us what it means?
Again, I emphasize, THERE IS NOT A MAC 5870 YET !!! I am being silly and trying to anticipate and solve the early flash problems BEFORE WE GET THE ROM OR DRIVERS !!!
Sadly, our respite from "file too big for EEPROM" seems to have ended. Meanwhile, I would like to see ATIFLASH put a larger than 128K file on my EEPROM. What is wrong?
I am attaching the original XFX file along with my bastardized "mac" one. Anybody?
