Mac Pro :: Finding Burner With Tray That Clears The Door
Mar 25, 2008
This is a case where that extra few millimeters in tray position meant the drive was physically incompatible with the Mac Pro. Before I go shopping for a new drive, I'd like to find out if you guys have recommended brand/models that you KNOW fits into your Mac Pros (because you installed it and it works, duh).

I just bought a new iMac with Mac OS X 10.5 and I wanted to build my own external USB 2.0 DVD burner.
I've heard that people have had problems, but I was wondering if anyone had any success with any specific drive?

I'm hoping this can be answered with a simple "yup" so here it goes.
I have an 8-core 2008 Mac Pro tower. I need to throw a blu-ray burner in it.
The tower only has IDE interface cables for the two optical drive bays.
Will these play nicely together?

I currently have a 450MHz Cube with a standard CD-ROM. I would like to add a CD burner, but I'm debating whether to buy an internal burner, perhaps one that originally came with the Cube, or a faster external version.

In preferences, I set safari to clear my downloads manually but it still clears it automatically. I've already tried reinstalling Safari 4 but the problem just cropped up again a week later.
Is this a virus or something?

I have a big annoyance with the Messages Beta for Mac. When I close the window and re-open it, all the conversations are gone. This makes it hard to reply to a message I got earlier or review recent conversations. On iDevices, if you close it, everything is still there, unless you delete it.

I'm having a problem getting my CD drive door to open (the CD drive was empty when the problem started). Have tried pushing and holding down keyboard eject key, holding down mouse key while restarting, and typing "eject cd" in open format. When I do these things, the drive repeatedly makes a sort of "grunt" (effort noise) but doesn't pop open, so this appears to be a mechanical problem. I removed the drive faceplate and was finally able to open the drive by pushing the manual eject button and pulling on the tray, though it requires some finagling and doesn't always work. When the tray does open this way, it does not automatically roll all the way out or back in, but has to be pulled/pushed, and once it shuts, it once more can't open without manual intervention. However, I discovered that as long as there's a CD in the tray, it opens and closes fine. While always keeping a CD in the drive is a temporary fix.

t seems that the screw in the memory access door is stripped, and I can't open it to install more RAM. Has anyone else had this problem? The screw just turns and turns and never comes out. I've never opened it before, and I'm the first and only owner of this iMac.

I tried everything. All of the screwdrivers in my house, with no force and with full force. The damned screw wont move at all. I've had this iMac since 2008 and I just feel like adding more RAM, as the 1GB is kind of well, small.

First the problem started when the mac would go to sleep I couldnt wake it up. The monitor light would just blink green and the screen would be black. Also programs started just randomly crashing, for no reason. Mainly Firefox (tired Safari, same thing.) Now the computer will not boot. Meaning I start it, it chimes, i get the grey loading screen the little wheel spins for mabye 15 sec, then the screen goes black and the monitor light flashes green. HOWEVER, I can hear the computer continue to load, and if i move the mouse around and click I can hear things being accessed.
Specs
1.25g Dual processor
ATI Radeon 9200 video card
2g ram
so I have done the PRAM thing, I took out all the ram, and reseated it, and I moved the video card to different slots, I also tested the other 2 connection on the card, still with the same result... the s- vid didnt even pull a signal.

My much loved G4, dual 1GHZ processor, mirrored door model, finally died. I bought a second hand G4 with the model spec just below this one - the 867 MHz processor - as I wanted to go on using my cinema display monitor with ADC connector. Newer MACs won't run this monitor without a special adaptor box (which costs more than buying a second hand G4!) The G4 I bought doesn't have a DVD-RW drive, just a CD drive. I had a DVD-RW drive on my own old machine. I was wondering - is it easy to take this drive out of my machine and put it in the one I bought? Or does the lower spec make this a problem?
The guy I bought the G4 from had looked after it well, added a second large hard drive, and updated to Leopard. I had still been using Panther on my own G4, as I still needed to use Classic for some software and games. So, second query is - can I easily reinstall the OS on the MAC I bought to go back to using Panther? Or is there a way to run both operating systems, leaving Leopard as it is - very useful to have for some new applications - and installing the Panther OS on the other hard disc? Ideally, I would like to have both available, but if not possible, then Panther use would take priority. I have the Panther install discs, but the G4 I bought did not come with Leopard install discs.

I am having problems with a G4 mirror door that keeps coming up with a question mark. I have tried replacing the battery, and doing multiple pram resets. It will still start up to external drives, if I hold down the option key. I have tried booting from an external and setting the startup disk. This seems to work after it restarts, but if the computer is off for more than two minutes, it won't start up again (even if it stays plugged in). It will just go back to the question mark folder at boot?

i was just carrying my MBP in my hand today by my hip and i started hearing some noises when i started walking. It looks like its the back door, if i touch down on it a little, it seems like it moves up and down a little (up meaning up towards the machine when its closed). Are the screws just loose or is this normal.

just received my new MP and noticed the same thing with the 08 Modell which is that the door sits slightly offset on the case meaning theres a little gap about 0,5mm between the closed door and the outer case.
Second my fans "boostA & boostB" are spinning at 1100rpm at idle I thought they should normally idle at around 800rpm? (I read at least)

A dad dropped my aluminuim Macbook 13" and the system runs fine, no issues with that, but I noticed the battery door had moved and wedged itself so there were gaps at the edges. I removed the door, and try as I might, I can't get it to line up properly.I'm really upset about this, as I've had it for a year now and really looked after it.I have the three year Apple Care plan, and I'm going to an Apple shop on Saturday about my iPhone anyway- do you think this problem is fixable?

my first question is: where can I get a quick start to "take control" of my brand new used G5 late '05 2.3 dual core Power Mac? I'm accustomed to going to device manager to check on things, update or disable drivers, partition, reformat, set selective start-up, you know; all that. I bookmarked something like Switch 101 and am left shy of the depths I wish to go.
I've fiddled with an acquaintance's MacBook Pro and found it somewhat intuitive, so navigation in and around the apps won't be too difficult to switch over to but how can I do something like pick and choose what I want to show up in my task bar or whatever the Macquivalent is.
And secondly, F12 opens the Dashboard not the DVD tray. Option F12 doesn't help. Unless I need to literally "hold F12 until the open tray appears..." or something like that. That hasn't worked either.
I'm sure I won't regret the switch. I've been threatening to for the last three or four years; five of which is my level of PC-ing.

My CD tray is stuck in my powermac G5, I keep pressing the button to eject it on my keyboard but nothing happens, I've tried restarting it. Unfortunately there isn't a CD in the drive so I can't drag the icon to the trash which is what the apple support site said, but I just want to open the drive to put a CD in? All the keys on my keyboard work fine except that bloody eject button. Its one of the older keyboards, not the flat ones that you get now, its the version before that.

Just today, my TSST DVD writer tray will not stay closed during or after booting my G5. The "Eject" key will operate it normally, but a few seconds after I close it the tray will open again... and stay open. Same thing happens if I manually close it. No disc is in the tray. This problem is 100% repeatable. I reset the PRAM in my G5. I have "Patchburn v 4.0.5" software for the TSST CDDVDW SH-S222L installed, and I re-installed it but with no effect on the problem.

For future reference: what is the best way to get open the CD tray (if installer disc needs to be put in) if your system won't boot? I thought I would ask in case this situation arises. I'm not using a Mac keyboard and there is no eject button on my keyboard. It's a G4 with mirrored doors but I don't see any buttons to eject the tray.

I've been looking and looking and couldn't find anything. The DVD tray is stuck in the open position and won't retract. When I hit the eject button, it moves like it's trying, but only travels about 1/4". I tried gently nudging it in, and that didn't work, so then I tried a bit firmer and combos of that plus tilting it. Nothing's working.
Also, I figured that maybe it just crapped out on me, so I'd get a new one, but I don't think you can get the drive out if the tray is open, because you just pull the housing straight out, right?

I've searched the forums pretty thoroughly, but no one has listed these exact symptoms.
I've got a PowerPC G5 running 10.4. After four years of dedicated service, my Superdrive gave out, so I bought a Sony drive (SONY DVD RW DRU-842A in profiler) to replace it.
Here's the trouble:
Any time the machine goes to sleep with a disc in the drive, it won't eject when I wake it up. I have to restart, then eject. Other than that, the drive works beautifully. If this question has been answered elsewhere, please redirect me there, sorry for the repost.
Speaking of sleep, when I put the machine to sleep through the menu it goes fully to sleep (no fan/other noise). But when it goes to sleep on its own, I can still hear the machine churning away. My roomate has a newer Mac Pro that doesn't do this.

I bought this MacBook on eBay a week or so ago, it's showing as ~8 weeks old right now and it was new in box with all the wrappings when I first bought it. I haven't used the SuperDrive at all until today when I installed Microsoft Office and the Garage Band sound pack. I'm positive I didn't cause this damage; one because I have taken care of this MacBook like it was my baby, and two because I don't see how this would have been possible by me. The picture is kinda hard to see, sorry it was difficult to try and get a good steady shot of it. I'm clueless as of what to do about this.
