Mac Pro :: Finding 3,1 Controller - SATA III Compatible?

Oct 11, 2010

This weekend I starting getting the clicking sound of death from my boot drive. Today I ran out and got a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB HDD that is SATA/300 drive. Are the higher read/write speeds supported by the MP 3,1 controller?

As I write this, I've got CCC cloning the entire drive and praying that it doesn't fail mid-copy.

I'm mostly looking for bulk (non-redundant) storage using an eSATA port multiplied enclosure. Nothing too fancy required. Are there any cheaper basic eSATA multi-link options available? (2006 MP) My biggest concern is good driver support. I see some SI/Sonnet cards that have questionable driver support especially with Snow Leopard.

OS X :: SATA Enclosure For An External HD?

Nov 27, 2009

I'm replacing my 320GB HD from my late '08 MBP with a new Hitachi 500GB unit.

It would be a shame to let the old HD go to waste, so I was wondering what SATA enclosures you guys and girls are using? Preferably something that will connect to my MBP using either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. There are so many out there, I don't want to buy the wrong one and be disappointed with the quality. Thanks in advance.

Hardware :: Can IDE Enclosure Work With SATA Drive?

Dec 28, 2007

I got a great deal on an external HD enclosure. Such a good deal in fact that I bought 2 of them with the idea of putting my two 500 GB SATA drives from my Quad G5 into them ( I'm replacing the G5's original drives with new 750 GB drives). When I received the enclosures I realized that they are wired for the older IDE type drive with the 40 pin ribbon connector. I can't get a refund on the enclosures. Is there a simple way to convert these enclosures to accept SATA drives?

Also what is everyone's thoughts regarding the WD Scorpio Blue 1TB? Will these play nicely together?

Mac Pro :: Finding Compatible Airport Cards?

Oct 3, 2010

I've got an old school mac pro 1.1 (because i'm too poor to afford a newer one) which didn't come with an airport card when I go it. Have just grabbed one out of a Macbook to put in the mac pro. It works, but not as a normal airport card should.

I'm not sure if its an incompatible card, or if i'm just dealing with a software issues. The normal airport menu up by the clock is useless. It just says Airport: No configured, and then has a link to network preferences in system preferences. I can connect to a network, and once its connected it works how it should, but to connect I need to go into network in system pref, then under network name, select Join other network, then show network, then i'll see the list of networks and be able to select the right one. But if I restart, or the computer goes to sleep, it forgets all that information, and I have to go back to the start again and select the network again.

Do you think its an incompatible card, or is there some software trick I can do to get it working properly?
