OS X Mavericks :: How To Remove Mails And Attachments Permanently
Aug 24, 2014I just realized my Archive.mbox (~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes) is quite big (8.5GB) and I decided to remove old mails with large attachments.
As I use GMail account via POP3, first I removed mails from the Google account and I freed up about 1.5GB extra space. Later, I searched for mails with attachments in Mail.app, then sorted then and started to remove and emptied the trash. This operation was quite weird as some of them where moved to the Trash folder, some not. As I was controlling the space of the Mailboxes folder this is what I noticed:
- Archive.mbox - the size of the mbox didn't change.
- Deleted Messages.mbox increases while removing another mails then decreased while wiping it out (this is what I expected).
I removed a lot of mails and didn't free up ANY space!Also, while googling I found out about "Mail Downloads" folder which is moved from Library to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads. As I set "Remove unedited downloads" to "When Mail Quits" can I simply remove all subdirs from this dictionary to save some space? This folder is only used for copy of attachments, right?

Oct 16, 2010I ask for forgiveness since now if I'm posting something that already exists and I couldn't find, but I wasn't able to find any helpful resource to fix my problem.
I've always used Mail and I like it. I have three addresses, one of the provider, the other two belongs to my personal domain. They've always worked fine.
Since two months they suddenly stopped to send e-mails. The error says there's a problem with smtp server. I tried to change smtp settings, I've edited mail settings, tried to set up another account and tried to download another app for mail: always the same problem. My mother, that has a mac too and an e-mail account with our provider, doesn't have any problem. So I tried to copy those settings on my MacBook Pro.. nothing.

Jan 11, 2009I'm using MacOSX and Mac Mail. The cub scouts send a weekly newsletter via Scouttrack. When I view this on the Mac, I cannot see any attachments; it's like they are not there at all. When I view it from Outlook on a PC, it doesn't show the little paper clip, but when I open the email, then I can see that the attachments are there.
Is there any way to get the mail application on the Mac to recognize that there are attachments in the email??

May 11, 2012Why are my attachments not showing up as attachments when recieved. They are sent from Mail as windows "friendly" - but never the less always show up inlaid in the mail. The recipient then have to ctrl clik on the documents, save them on the harddrive before being able to fx print.

Sep 15, 2009I'm a newbie to Mac and need some help. I find that the pre-installed 'Mail' is rather convenient but have trouble deleting e-mails I no longer need. Upon deleting selected mails and emptying the trash, I find that some items are STILL there when logging into the actual website (i.e. Gmail). E-mails that I thought were long gone are still there. Please someone help? I think I'm missing something.

Oct 2, 2010I've been using mail for a while and have been having problems sending mail from it using my isp's settings. i just got a mobile me trial account to see if I could use that to send email from the app. That was another no no. So I tried to reset mail so I could start a fresh by deleting the mail folder in the library. Now when I open the app it auto add the mm account and only has an inbox, no other options down the left hand side etc and still tries to connect to my old isp's smpt settings. Im looking for a way to reset mail to fresh.

But when I want to look for those emails in Ｕser/Library/Caches/Metadata/Microsoft.... or wherever all I get is a bunch of numbered emails like "1.vRge08Message" and up to whatever number of emails I got in Entourage.
Why doesn't it display emails by the sender's name like it did when I searched for them in Finder?

Feb 15, 2010I need some help with the mail program on my MBP. For some reason this morning it has decided to keep getting the same emails over and over again and adding them as new. So now I am up to 3000 new emails even though I have already read and deleted them before. Every time I click for it to check for new mail it just downloads the old ones three and four times. How can I get it to stop downloading them again?

Jun 26, 2008Every now and again I get a message from Mail.app saying asking me to enter my gmail password as the login using the saved password failed. I then enter my password ( the same one that is saved ) and it works. However, I've noticed that some of the emails in my gmail account are not downloaded to mail.app, so I have to go to gmail.com to check that I have not missed any emails, which makes mail.app pretty pointless.
Also, I can't use outgoing server, as it never sends my emails. I have never had these gmail problems with Thunderbird before, using the same account settings.

Jun 23, 2012After the latest iPhoto update a week or so ago, my ability to e-mail from iPhoto has stopped.I get an error: "Your email did not go through because the server did not reply.Check your Internet connection. If the connection is working properly, the email server may be down. Try sending your email again later." This is not the case, standard mails work fine and I have removed and added 2 different types of e-mail addresses in iPhoto and its the same (one a .me and one a sky.com) I have diabled the firewall (just in case) but still no joy.
