Mac Pro :: Unresponsive After Sleep - Hard Reboot Required

Apr 9, 2012

MacPro 12 Core is going into sleep mode (so it seems) and becomes unresponsive requiring a hard reboot by holding the power button. Did this on a new user account I created, then it did it in Recovery Mode while using Disk Utility to repair the drives. I was about to try reinstalling OS X but it seems that this maybe a hardware problem if it happened in Recovery mode. Is my thinking right, or could it still be software? Trying to run Hardware test (D on startup) but can't get it to work so far.

IMac :: Sleep / Hibernation And USB Becomes Unresponsive

Jan 23, 2009

I have an iMac (20" 2.4 g, 3 gig ram, os 10.5.6) that has recently stopped waking up after a long night of sleep. I have also found that the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive if the mac does wake up. The mouse has power, but the keyboard does not show any sign of life. The mouse glows red, but when I hit caps-lock, the little green light doesn't come on. I have tried switching ports, but no dice. As I said, the USB port clearly is sending power to the mouse, but not accepting any input. When I restart, all is well on most occassions, but the problem has persisted, once or twice, after a re-boot.

MacBook Air :: Trackpad Tap To Click Unresponsive After Sleep?

Nov 20, 2010

I just got a 13" MacBook Air and I'm having an issue with it; googling around I've seen slightly similar problems, but nothing identical to what is going on with mine. I have the trackpad set to use the "tap to click" option in System Preferences and I've noticed that after I sleep the machine and wake it again, something gets bungled with it. The tap to click either stops responding entirely, requiring that I use the regular physical click instead, or it's highly, highly unresponsive. I've seen other reports of erratic clicking and the mouse moving on its own after sleeping the laptop.

Which thankfully mine isn't doing, but I haven't seen anybody reporting this slightly more demure issue. In any event, rebooting the machine fixes the problem completely until I sleep it next. I'm not 100% convinced that this is an Air issue, however, since I think it affected my 15" MacBook Pro to a lesser degree right after I upgraded that machine to 10.6.5, but I can't be entire certain of that since I no longer have that laptop and rarely used it without an external mouse in the first place.

OS X Yosemite :: Power Reset Required After Sleep

Dec 9, 2014

Often when I put my iMac to sleep in the evening I find the system unresponsive when I come to use it the next day. I can see instantly that the system has an issue because I see that the screen backlight is on. The system does not react to any mouse or keyboard input and requires a power off reset to restart.

I thought that the issue may involve Parallels which is often running when I have this issue , however, I have spoken with Parallels support who recommended removing parallels, repairing the disk permissions and reinstalling Parallels which appears to have had no effect.

The iMac is very new and was purchased in November 2014 and is configured with a 3.5GHz i7 processor, 16GB or RAM 3TB HD and NVIDEA 980 graphics card.

OS X :: System Gets Slow After Sleep Mode / Unresponsive To My Commands?

Sep 8, 2009

Background info:
A few weeks ago I upgraded from a regular macbook to a brand new macbook pro 2.66 ghz. I replaced the hard drive right away with a 500gb one (had it done by apple). So my machine runs snow leopard now, I used the data transfer mode to basicly copy the data and apps from my old macbook to the new MBP.

The "problem"
It all worked fine and smooth until a week ago ...For a week now I have a problem that really concerns me. Whenever I open my laptop from a sleep mode he gets really slow and unresponsive to my commands. Its like its crashing, all I can do to get out of this is a hard reboot.

However .. during a reboot OR a cold bootup the MBP gets stuck in the grey screen with only the apple logo .. after a minute or 3 it will start loading but it will never reach the login screen... The strange thing is that when I do reboot it over and over again .. it eventually will boot normally and when it does the MBP runs fine .. until I turn it off or put it in sleep mode .. then the nightmare will start again.

What I have done

I personally suspects the Hard Drive to be the culprit, I get the feeling that the Hard Drive is having trouble starting up or getting out of sleep mode. I am not sure tough.
I have done the following:

- Disc Utility (gives no errors)
- Booting up in terminal and run Disc Utility there (repaired a volume issue)

Could this be a leopard issue? I actually can't remember if this issue happened after the last macOS update or not ..I never had a problem with my iBook and Macbook so I have little experience on troubleshooting. So I hope you more technical experienced users can give me some tips on what to do here.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: System Unresponsive After Coming Back From Sleep

Mar 29, 2012

I leave my imac on at night, from screensaver it goes to a black screen but I have selected that the hard drive never goes to sleep. In the morning when I click the mouse or a button on the keyboard it shows me a frozen screensaver screen and the imac is totally unresponsive. Have run disk utility and everything seems totally fine there. It is impossible to use the force quit option so have to resort to switching the whole thing off from the power button.

The software is all up to date and since disk utility shows everything in perfect working order I am puzzled what this is. A corrupt file or app? I am not a heavy user so no games installed - only software installed is the caffeine app, microsoft office for mac which is compatible with my imac, skype and that's all. Lots of free space on the hard drive too. I am not an expert on macs so I don't know how to look in case something in specific causes this that I can uninstall.

Because it happened to me a few times where the cursor will skip or one time the cursor wont even move or be responsive with my finger. The weird part is that once I exit safari the trackpad seems to work again perfectly. Also not sure if its because I have sweaty hands and my fingers are too wet? But its not something excessively sweaty or nasty just a lil moisture I guess on my finger tips at times.
Update: Never mind, found out the culprit istat pro.

I moved the card back to slot one and it worked!  Rebooted again, no display.  Move card again, everything is fine.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Wont Wake From Sleep, Even After Reboot?

Oct 13, 2009

I searched the forum, but saw a lot of sleep issues. None quite like mine. I have a MBP 13" bought in June. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep just fine. When I open it, I can hear it start up. The sleep light becomes illuminated, but then about 5 seconds later goes back to sleep.I have tried to hold the power button and shut the computer down, and start it back up. When it starts up, it shows the white screen with the apple logo, then goes blue, and is about to load the log-on screen, and goes back to sleep. I have already tried an archive and install, and a erase and install. Neither worked.Occassionally it will start back up if I just wait 20-30 minutes. Sorry about the long log, but I do not know what information is needed. I tried to wake from sleep around 1:27 in the logs, and it actually let me boot up and log on around 1:53. To give you an idea of what I was doing to cause these

MacBook Pro :: Double Tap Doesn't Save After Reboot Or After Waking From Sleep Mode?

my mbp i7's double tap doesn't save when i set it to a certain "double-click speed" so when i put my mbp to sleep or restart it, i'm forced to go back to the settings and set my double-click speed again. The point of me doing this is because for some reason, my double-click doesnt register or hi-light the text in the URL or text in essays etc. when its set up to the fourth notch on the slide bar. so i have to put it down to 0 on the bar in order for my double tap to register. Its really annoying to have to redo this every time i come back to my mbp.

Intel Mac :: 2009 20" Slow/Unresponsive Hard Drive Access

Mar 11, 2012

I stopped by a friends house to try and help them with an early 2009 20" iMac that started stalling on startup (sometimes before their login screen, and sometimes after).  The computer didn't exhibit this behaviour at all, then overnight, it behaved as stated and never once allowed them to get far enough to launch an application or open the Finder.

When I arrived, rebooted and held down Command + Option + P + R, but it had no effect on the problem.   I then booted off the original OSX discs and ran Disk Utility.  At first it seemed slow to complete, but before long (a few minutes) the Verify Disk finished without any errors.  Next, I attempted "Repair Disk Permissions" and noticed that this was taking a very long time, +10 minutes.  That said, it did complete without any problems, albiet slowly.

Unfortunately, this did not allow me to login, and I never made it to the login screen.  Being a close friend, I offered to take the computer home and try to copy as much data as I could through Target Disk Mode over Firewire.

My first attempt to copy her Home directory got 25% of the way through the roughly 4 GB of data, then stopped.  I rebooted and tried again, with even less success than before (I could barely access Folders let alone copy after the reboot).  I attempted to recreate the "successful" attempt by unplugging the computer and letting it sit for a few hours.  Sure enough, I was able to copy data from the Target Disk Mode mounted drive, but after about 1 GB of copying the access to the hard slowed to a crawl (a few kilobytes per minute) then halted completely.

I've repeated the above process to slowly but surely copy the entire 4 GB of home directory data, and am about to call it quits after salvaging what was important to her.

Question:  Is this the sign of a failing hard drive close to the end of its life, or is this something potentially more serious with the logic board?  I've only come across a stubborn drive like this with an external drive that was close to failure, and assume this is the case.

MacBook Pro :: Mouse "freezes" After Sleep/reboot

May 21, 2012

After putting my MacBook Pro to sleep or rebooting, the mouse does not work anymore. I can move the mouse pointer, but can't left-click.

It seems as OS X senses a "left mouse button pressed" condition the whole time, when I wake the MacBook an move the pointer, I continuously draw selections on the screen, as if I pressed the left button and moved the pointer.

The only thing that helps is a Cmd + alt + P + R reboot, then the funtionality is fully restored, but after putting it to sleep or rebooting normally, the problem's back everytime. It's not a trackpad issue, connecting a USB mouse results in the same symptoms. I also did an SMC reset (removed battery and pressed power button 5 sec) I travel a lot with my MAcBook and have to do a hard reboot everytime when using it.

I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?

Mac Mini :: Why Does It Crash And Reboot When Do A Time Machine Backup To A USB Hard Disk

Jun 17, 2012

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted. After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again. It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).

Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.
