MacBook Pro :: Superdrive Chime Sound At Startup Suddenly On 2010?

Sep 19, 2010

however today suddenly the superdrive decided to make a 1-2 second 'seeking' sound at *every* startup. there is no dvd inserted nor have i used it even once in this week. it does this at the grey apple screen at the same time the apple "chime" sounds.

i am pretty sure it didn't to this up until today, i am not particularly concerned but why would it start doing this after a week on its own?

MacBook Pro :: No Startup Chime On Late 2008/OS Sound Is Working Fine?

Jul 3, 2009

Here's a bit of a strange one, noticed over the last couple of days that the start up chime was getting quieter, then today no sound what so ever when turning it on.

Now from my understanding of it, the chime is a bit like a POST beep on a PC? Hear it once and every thing's fine? Otherwise the MBP is booting up fine, dual booting it and have sound in OS X and Win 7?!

Suspect I may have a HDD issue, as had to run chkdsk /f /r the other day and had to stop it after 12 hours as it was still on stage 4 of 5 @ 18%, and it seems to be running slower, also the HDD is becoming more vocal.

I'm going to run a full AHT on the unit, was just wondering if anyone else has come across something like this before?

OS X :: No Sound Except The Startup Chime?

May 28, 2007

I've lost all sound on my G4 iBook running OS 10.4.9. I still get the start-up chime every time I reboot, but there's no sound at all inside OS X itself.

System Preferences says there are "No output devices found." System Profiler says I have "No built-in audio."

I have tried repairing disk permissions. I have tried creating another user account and signing in. I have tried zapping the PRAM, resetting the PMU, and trashing all my cache files for both the system and my personal login. I have tried booting with Command-S and running a file system check (fsck -yf), but am told that the system "appears ok." Nothing has helped... I continue to get the start-up sound on boot, but nothing inside OS X.

Oddly, if I hook my M-Audio podcast mixer, the system detects my audio as "M-Audio," and I get sound if I use the headphone jack on the M-Audio unit itself (i.e., I can listen to iTunes, watch a YouTube video, etc.). But as soon as I unplug the unit, System Preferences reverts back to "No output devices found," and my machine resumes its maddening silence.

Since I use this machine pretty much only for podcasting and video editing, it's pretty useless to me without sound. Can someone help me, before I completely freak out? I was up until about 2am last night trying to resolve this.

How can I get this machine to "remember" the fact that it has "Built-in audio?"

when you logon instead of the apple sound could you change it to something else (short 15 second audio clip of star wars theme for example)

-OR-

would it be possible to have the computer play "welcome to bcrguy's macbook" after i put in my password and it goes to the home screen from the login screen?

MacBook Pro :: MBP 7/Immediate Boot Loop After Startup Chime

May 6, 2010

I have a mid-07 Santa Rosa MBP. When I turn it on, nothing comes on the screen (not even backlight), but I'll hear the startup chime and 2 seconds later, it reboots and does the same thing. Here is what I have tried:

1. Reset SMU
2. Reset PRAM
3. Replacing HD
4. Replacing PRAM/CMOS battery
5. Tried booting off DVD (but it reboots too fast after the chime)

OS X :: Macbook Startup Chime Repeats Continuously?

Jun 7, 2010

Hi guys, I have a 2.26ghz Macbook and when i start it up the chime keeps repeating over and over again until i get sick of it and hold the power button to force shut it down, sometimes it will start up fine after that and boot right up and sometimes it keeps repeating again, then i just leave it for a few hours and try again and it will usually work. Also over the last day or so i've been getting a mixture of the repeating chime and the blank white screen with no apple logo and grey spiral. Other than this problem the computer is running flawlessly, does this sound like a hardware or software problem?

I've already tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, I've ran the hardware test which came up clean, checked the drive with disk utility and eventually reformatted the HDD and reinstalled Mac OSX but still no change. I'm not running any extraordinary software just google chrome, Skype etc. so that shouldn't have any thing to do with it.

MacBook Pro :: Black Screen At Startup Chime?

Jul 22, 2010

I just replaced my LCD. It was working fine, but now just stopped working. It's a mid-2009 A1286 15in Macbook Pro.

The computer itself works fine and I tested it using an external monitor. I can FAINTLY make out the display on the screen, so I'm guessing it is a backlight issue? Don't mid-2009 don't have display inverters?

I also tried resetting the pram and SMC.

MacBook Pro :: Replacing SuperDrive With 2-nd HDD In New - Mid 2010 - MBP 13" 2.66 GHz

May 13, 2010

Tired of constantly carry with an external HDD, so I think put the 2-nd HDD in place of SuperDrive (model MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898). The main problem in selecting enclosure for it. Virtually all of the shops, where I found it on sale, listed compatibility with all MBP Unibody 13 ", but when I ask for producers, with the specific issue of compatibility this MBP model, the most common response - we did not try, but it looks to be compatible.

Maybe someone that already had occasion to conduct a similar operation (or just hear) the new MBP 13 "? Is the new model all the same as in the old unibody or what that difference is?

Well, the question about the choice of 9.5 mm SATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure . I found the following models from different manufacturers, which is better? (Or can suggest any other day, one I missed something)

MCE OptiBay Hard Drive

9.5 mm SATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure @ ebay 1

9.5 mm SATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure @ ebay 2

MaxConnect Optical bay kit

9.5 mm SATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure @ iFixit

MacBook :: 2009 Black Screen With Chime Sound

Mar 5, 2012

I have a Macbook 2009 that wont turn on. When you press the power key you hear the normal boot chime but no picture appears.

The laptop was given to me without any hard drive, so I installed a blank 250GB HDD. The HDD has no OS on it, and I am not sure how it is currently formatted as it is new.

Even when I use an external screen and regardless of whether a HDD is present the macbook does not show any sign of life on the screen or external screen but still chimes.

I know it would be a good idea to boot with restore discs etc, but even if no OS is present surely the screen should still come on and display the gray and apple logo? I did all the resets and holding button configurations on startup, such as reset PRAM.

MacBook Pro :: Audio Chime At Startup - Selected Device Has No Output Controls

Sep 4, 2014

When I start my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 15") I get the familiar audio chime.  However, when it finishes startup and I get to my desktop, I have no audio, and the audio icon up top is grayed out.  The audio output jack works fine.  I can use speakers and headphones.  I've tried the solution of wiggling around a headphone plug in the jack, as well as doing the same with a toothpick.  I've also reset the PRAM.  For some reason, the problem persists.  When I open sound settings in preferences, the only device listed is "Digital Out" and there is a message under it saying "The Selected Device has No Output Controls."

Mac Pro :: Slow Startup / No Chime

Sep 1, 2014

Purchased this one from a friend of mine bc my own Mac Pro (we both bought them at the same time, back in Feb., 2008) had issues with video card and bad memory sticks. So this Mac Pro was his, he barely used it and since i want to continue using this type of machines I bought it from him. The computer works just fine with only two things that have me worried:

1- It takes too long to startup. From a solid gray screen it goes to later show the apple logo and then the animation. Eventually all starts and no issues whatsoever...but all very lenghly and with no chime.

I tried the PRAM reset and it does chime twice and everything but not later on when I turn it back on. it does chime at Re-start! Since my friend played with the user accounts so he could sell it to me, I wonder if that somehow is causing the bug...

MacBook Air :: Late 2010 Suddenly Crashes And Will Not Stay On?

Nov 30, 2014

I returned from a trip during which I used my MacBook Air (Late 2010) constantly.  Upon leaving the hotel I closed the computer and put it into my carrier and did not open it until arriving at home later that day.  There was moisture on the keyboard and screen at the corresponding position in an area about the size of a 50¢ piece,  I cleaned that up and turned the machine on and it booted up and then created. Several times it would turn off and on a few times without any input from me. At times it will boot up like all is well but with any keystroke it crashes to a black screen.  If I had to guess, I'd say the HD is toast.  It was replaced under warranty once already. The moisture is a complete mystery.

PowerPC :: G4 Won't Boot... No Startup Chime?

Dec 30, 2010

I recently reinstalled a clean Tiger on my old MDD G4 with the intent on giving it to a friend of mine in Oregon. Everything was smooth here in Los Angeles. Got the OS on and running sweet... 10.4.11 combo update... all's well.

I drive up to Oregon, set it up in his office using his old CRT monitor and power it on. It chimes and manages to find the Tech Tool eDrive recovery partition, but not the OS on the boot drive. Then, seconds later, screen of death/kernel panic and no boots or startup chimes thereafter.

Steps I've taken:
I have reset the PMU
I have removed all peripherals, including viddy, SATA adapter and all but on stick of RAM
Tried every stick of RAM by itself
No startup chime -- just a fan for a few seconds then a super fan kicks in... no signal to monitor at all.

Strange symptom: at times power was making it to the drives, and other times not. (determined by me putting my hand on the drive to feel its vibration or lack thereof during boot).

Do I need a new PSU? And if so where to buy?

Dual 867 MDD G4
SATA adapter/w 300GB Tiger boot drive and 200GB data drive (w/ Panther still installed)
120GB data drive on IDE 66 bus w/Tech Tool recovery / restore partition

Mac Pro :: No Chime - Startup Process Successful Nevertheless

Aug 26, 2014

During the past ten hours or so, while attempting to troubleshoot a #@!*# DW 4.4 updated CD on my Mac Pro, I have had several (5 to 7) confirmed instances of the Mac Pro Quad not emitting the start up chime, yet eventually starting up anyway.

The last three time there have been normal chimes and normal startups, if a bit sluggish.

Intel Xeon Mac_Pro1,1 [late 2006] 2.66 GHz Quad; 16 GB RAM; mutant/flashed, factory-overclocked 875/1225 "Apple PowerColor" ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB of GDDR5VRAM driving side-by-side dual 22"/24" monitors [shared with the G5-Quad] in Extended-Desktop mode; Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8 boot drives; intrusive Spotlight and frivolous Dashboard permanently disabled; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet and networked via wired Ethernet.

Mac Pro :: Rubbing Noise Heard After Startup Chime

Aug 13, 2008

The last two days I have woken up and started my G4, and I hear an odd noise. I hear my drives spin up, but it takes probably 15 seconds for the Apple to show up on the grey bootscreen, after the first Chime I hear a 2nd noise from the internal speaker that I can't really describe? I can also hear a weird noise that sounds like rubbing or something if I listen very closely. Maybe this is a dust build up on the fan. Disk Utility says both of my drives are fine, and my computer is running fine. I'm just kind of confused here.. Should I pick up some canned air and clean out the computer a bit?

Power Mac :: G4 Quicksilver Failing To Startup After Chime

Mar 12, 2012

My usually stable 10 year old G4 hard drive (attached to VGA monitor) is having serious problems with it's starting up process, so I am presently nursing it along (without shutting down at the end of the day) by using sleep mode. If I shut it down, chances are it fails to power up again. When I press the power on button to startup, I hear the chime and the startup process as usual, then everything stops within seconds, before the monitor screen is due to come on. The two external devices attached are the keyboard with mouse, plus a USB hub. No recent upgrades or changes. Everything is backed up on an external firewire disk. Since this trouble started a few days ago I have replaced the lithum battery and managed to successfully start it up only once (after a number of attempts) so I can nurse it along. I have tried all the usual troublshooting - when I restart in either safe, verbose, or reboot off OSX CD, single user mode, extensions off, or try to reset the PRAM fails to chime twice - in every instance it won't get past the chime. Checking the system profiler 'power on self test' indicates 'failed', failure type is 'external cache'. As I can't reboot off the OSX10 or systemworks CD I can't run Diskwarrior on the operating system or reinstall the operating system. So, I am now at the limit of my capabilities.
