Feb 28, 2007but anytime someone pounds on the table and I have my 12' iBook just chilling on it, it makes a resetting noise, a very mechanical sound that makes it seem like it's resetting itself once. I have no idea why, and I just beg people around me to regulate their anger.
However, even when I am picking up my iBook it'll make the noise.Is this a sign of a deteorating cd-rom drive? Or are most iBooks and Apple laptops like this?

Dec 26, 2010My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

Also for no apparent reason it started saying "you have logged in" every time I wake it up. Any clue how to make these annoying sounds go away and or what may have started them?

May 12, 2008I've had my Macbook Air 1.8GHz SSD since basically the day it was announced and aside from iChat video lag and YouTube (which has only happened lately), it's been almost perfect. One of the things I particularly loved about it was how silent it was, but as of Saturday, that suddenly changed. It now makings a constant (as in, never stops as long as the Air is on) noise which sounds like a harddrive being accessed; a kind of buzzing/whirring noise. It's not particularly loud, and once about 2ft away you can no longer hear it, but it is concerning that it would suddenly start.

Dec 5, 2014My 100G space came up as full last night so I freed up about 15g. space, but now today I notice it is going way slow, taking forever to open or show data in files - eg if I click on the master application folder - the names of indiv. folders show but file content on right doesn't come up until about 30 secs, and the computer itself is making all sorts of whirring/clicking type sounds which i called "thinking" but it's as if the memory is still full and is operating at half it's speed.
I have a 2.16 GHz intel core duo processor, and memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Get info shows: Capacity of 99.69GB, avail is 14.11 GB
Any tips on what has happened since last night to today? I thought it would be running faster and accessing files really easily.
I just got a pop up saying: Your iDisk is unavailable. Make sure you are logged in to your MObile ME acct, then try again to access your iDisk.
COuld this be the problem? I've never seen this before. What is my iDisk, and what does it do?

MacBook Pro :: HD Makes Mechanical Sound During Bootup?
Oct 26, 2009I've had my 13inch MBP for almost 3 months now. I love it. However within the past month and a half the hard drive on when I press the button for the laptop to turn on makes a horrible sound. A mechanical sound of the hard drive..turning on or starting up or something. It's like, kinda embarrassing to turn it on in public cause it sounds like a disabled electronic robot baby yelling for help. When I first got my MBP when it turned on it did not make a noise at all. at all. but now all of a sudden it does? And let me tell you, when I had my original white macbook from 2006-early 2009 it began making the same noise in like mid-07. Therefore I know I'm not the only one to have ever heard this noise before.

Nov 20, 2010I own a 17" MacBook Pro i7. I have noticed a very buggy sound from the top left corner of my MBP. It sounds like the HDD rotating but when observed carefully, its a some mechanical sound from the logic board (left hand top corner). The sound is comparatively lesser when I switch to 330m gpu using gfxCardStatus. I want to know if this is an issue only with my machine or it a common problem found on the this series of MBP ? Should I contact Apple for a repair or its a normal behavior of Flash on OS X ?

Apr 15, 2008You know that electrical smell ... well that's what is coming from the cabinet in which I have my Mac. It's not pungent or burning, but it's there. It may just be the DSL modem that Verizon recently sent me because that did have an odor like that when we hooked it up. Most importantly though, the computer is making a whirring sound, almost like a heavy hum when it's turned on. As it runs it quiets down though. It isn't loud but it is noticeably there and it's been doing it for a long time. I'd say for about a year and nothing bad has happened .. yet. I'm just wondering if I should put any more money into it. It needs more RAM to put Tiger on it and run it more efficiently but that shouldn't be a problem. I just wonder if I should abandon ship or stick with it. It's been a great machine and isn't beat up at all. I've rarely used it over the years.

MacBook Pro :: Started Freezing And Making Alarm Sounds
Jun 27, 2014I have had some issues with my macbook pro lately: A few weeks ago, my Macbook started freezing and making alarm sounds. I didn't do anything about it because it happened only a few times per week.
Suddenly it happened 4 or 5 times in a row, and after x times my Macbook wouldn't go past the grey start-up screen (Apple logo loading). So I was unable to login. I solved the ''issue'' by erasing the disk. My Macbook worked again, but all data was gone. The freezing issue was gone as well. But 2 days ago, it started.. again. And today, my Macbook suddenly crashed/shut down. Now, I am not even able to start my macbook. It doesn't show anything, if I press the power button, nothing happens.
I did a SMC reset, and my Macbook worked, but only for 15 minutes. It just happened again. Something is clearly wrong and I don't know what. my Macbook instanly freezed when I connected the power cord. And I think the power cord is broken, last few days it barely charged the Macbook.
OS X :: Loud Whirring / Grinding Sound Coming
Jun 18, 2009I just bought a new 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac off of MacMall last week (6 days ago) and it has been working fine up until a day and a half ago. You see, I put the iMac to sleep for a while, and when I woke it up there was a moderately loud (but in no way ear bashing) grinding/whirring sound coming from the left area of the machine under the screen. I now noticed that the longer I have the machine on for, the louder and more annoying it gets. Does anyone know what is there (HDD, fan or what)? Also, is this something I have to worry about or is this an issue all iMac users face? I am new to OS 10.5 and modern Macs. I am really starting to get worried about this, as the machine is almost brand new.

Mar 13, 2008I have the early 2008 Mac Pro, standard configuration. I run a 30" ACD and recently added a second monitor. Ever since then I have been hearing this faint whirring sound, as if something in the machine is starting/reving up and then whirring down. It's audible to me because I have my machine sitting on top of a pedestal desk right beside my table. Does running two monitors make something inside, maybe a fan, run wierd? Could it be the fan of the video card? I am just curious, as I had not heard the sound before when I was running just one monitor. Oh, and the second monitor in question is a Wacom Cintiq. Video card is the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. I dare not open the side panel when the machine is running to check what's causing it lest I mess something up. It's like, rrrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrrr, like a miniature reving sound. LOL, that's the best I can do to imitate the sound. It's as audible as the sound of the regular fans.

Aug 12, 2006For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?

Dec 2, 2009Had a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.

MacBook Pro :: Hinge Started To Develop Creaking Sound / Slight Bulge Between Bezel And Screen
Dec 12, 2009Mine is bulging out at the bottom of the screen, right by that area that gets burning hot when you are plugged in or are on the 9600m gt--right where is says "Macbook Pro".
I noticed that the hinge started to develop a creaking sound when I opened and closed the lid. So I investigated to see if there were any cracks in the hinge. What I found was that if you look at the space between the bezel and the screen, there is a slight (very slight) bulge right by the wording "Macbook pro". If you press down on it, it moves--unlike the rest of the bezel.
Anyone else notice this? I am pretty sure it is caused by the heat in that area. That is a really poor design.

Jan 13, 2009Every time I depress my trackpad (the one built into my MBP 15" mid 2009) It is doing a slight squeak...Now I'm meticulous about how well I keep my beloved MBP... but I do use it everyday for many things (Including design, word processing, accounts, pwning the microsoft network at my office)
But I am guessing that these things are built to last... and shouldn't have an effect on how much I have used it right... Should I take it to Apple and let them have a look at it is there a quick thing that I can do to mend it? Or should I just get over it and accept it as quirk of it's character?

May 29, 2009Whenever an application uses the internet, such as Opera, Safari or aMSNn the speakers create a static, crackling sound thats incredibly annoying. The only way to get rid of it is to shut down the app that makes it (usually aMSN or Safari) but it may start again soon. It must be an issue wtih the speakers as it doesn't have any effect on headphones.

Nov 12, 2009For the past few days my MBP has been slow. Ridiculously slow. Beachballing to open safari etc. I have just noticed that as it tries to load things it makes a weird sound. A short burring sounds followed by a long one then a short one. Don't know if that is relevant. Earlier today it froze so i had to do a hard shutdown (hold down the power button) and then it wouldn't boot. I ended up booting it off the snow leopard disc. This problem seemed to start when i started playing wow again but i had it installed for a long time. Could this be heat related?

Mar 20, 2012I know this question or thread has been asked a lot, but I started noticing yesterday that my mbp has been making this weird ticking sound. It was a light clicking sound, and it happened on and off. However, it was bothering me so I went to best buy (where I bought my macbook) and told them about it; they said they couldn't do anything for me because it probably wasn't my hard drive. They told me to wait until my computer slows down and then bring it in. But today the sound got worse, it sounds like white noise from the tv or some static from a really bad connection.It usually happens when I turn it on and while I'm using it. Some of my friends think it's over-heating but I doubt that's the case?
