Mac Pro :: Overtemp Red LED Comes On - What Part Of The System Does In Monitor

The OVERTEMP red LED keeps lighting up on the system board of my Power Mac G5 2.3GHz. Obviously something is overheating. I called Apple Support and he asked my how long it has been since I turned off my Power Mac. I told him its been 2 years (since I bought it). He said that I need to turn it off once in a while for some time. I use it to serve files so I can't turn it off. Sounds kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
He said that if it continues to happen I need to take it in for servicing because a fan could be broken, etc.
My father owns one of the original G5s, so its power pc not intel. Today while browsing an excel spreadsheet he says part of the screen turned black, then the monitor shut off, then the monitor came back on but not video. Mean while the fans started spinning out of control. Now when he tries to turn it on, he gets power, but all that happens is the fans spinning faster and faster and faster until he turns it off. No video or anything. Just speeding fans. He fears the CPUs died since they control the fans. Any suggestions? He also says the fans were spinning unusually fast these last few days.
Thinking about using airport express as part of a whole house audio system. My question is will the music streaming to the airport(s) be in sync with the music playing on the local computer speakers or will there be a noticeable delay?
I started using my macbook pro with an external monitor in mirror mode but I can't seem to unplug the power when I'm in this state, it automatically goes to sleep. I want to be able to unplug my laptop when its fully charged since its recommended to do so to preserve the battery life...but it doesn't seem like I can when using it this way. Or is it really not that big of a deal to unplug your battery every time it's fully charged. Are Apply batteries doomed to poop out eventually no matter what? I suppose turning it off at the end of work day could recoup damage?
I'm wanting to hook up a computer and use my MBP as the monitor, it's only so I can change some settings and then have it running on the network. Is this possible? I'm currently in my home in Germany, where I have 3 laptops and 0 Desktops. So I don't have direct access to a monitor... Unless I steal one from work.
Did Apple make a HUGE oversite in not making the monitors match in size to the iMac's? Am I the only one that would love to have an iMac with a second monitor? Being that the sleek look of my wifes iMac is amazing by itself, can imagine putting a monitor next to it that is of a different size and look. Why wouldn't Apple with all of its innovation and attention to detail with look and feel not have thought of this very thing? Is only 2 monitor sizes also a huge over site on the part of Apple?
a mini display port. I purchased the mini display port to DVI adapter to hook my computer up to a Viewsonic vx2235wm 22" screen. I plug it in and get nothing. I've read on the apple support site that some people with older mac mini's and MacBook Pro's can hook it up no problem. But for me, my monitor is getting no signal and my MacBook Pro doesn't detect the monitor in the Display Preferences.
I've searched online and in threads here on the "can I use an iMac as a monitor" question, and found mostly negative answers. One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port.However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor.The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring). -How's the performance?
I have a Mac G5 Dual 2.0ghz Running 3GB Ram 6 x 512 ddr pc 3200 400mhz i use it for music production, So as you can imagine i need plenty of ram to run some of the high end plugins, So i purchased 2 x 1GB Pc3200 400mhz Ram, Pushing up my total ram to 5GB, Plenty for what i need.
So i installed the ram in the 2 outside slots(the only 2 left) the mac booted up but wouldnt recognise the new ram,( thought i would save a few pound and went for the extra value ram) So i thought i would move the other ram up a slot and put the new ram in the first slot instead of the last one, it still wouldnt recognise the new ram,So i turn it off took out the ram, put the old ram back in its original slots, Turn the mac back on,......Nothing but a white light flashing on the monitor, & the fans going mad !
After trying each set of ram in pairs one at a time i managed to get one set to work in the first slot, 1 gb (2x512) once! Now i cant get anything to boot this mac up! the ram worked before, so why not now. Ive only been using a mac for about 2 years, and before that i built pcs for a living, & i know my way round pcs fine , but this has really got me.Please Please Please. if someone can help i would be very grateful, i need to get some important work finished. I've restarted my Powerbook G4, but it's still doing the same thing: it's not displaying part of the top menubar (regardless of whether I'm on Firefox or the Finder or whatever app) so I can't see the time, battery/charge status, wireless, etc. I can see everything on the left half just fine (the part where it's specific for each app: File, Edit, View, History, etc). But the right half is blank, *except* for the blue circle icon with a white magnifier icon inside -- that thing is flashing...
Another thing is that I can't open excel files. Weirdly, I can open MS Word just fine. It tells me "not enough memory", but these excel files are pretty small. The thing is, I had Office 2004, and a couple of months ago I installed Office 2008. Yesterday morning, I got an "Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.5 Update" and I just clicked "Update" like I usually do... but I was running late and had to take my laptop with me so I canceled it when it was like 80% done. Could that be causing problems?
BUT I remember the night before, I had the DVD player on, set a timer to *shut down* in 20 minutes, and I remember the morning after (the morning of this Update), I saw that my laptop was (still) ON, and it had a pop-up window to say that some stuff on my computer may run erraneously because my date on the laptop was set for before 1965 or something. So then I had to go fix the clock on my laptop which was set to like 1960 January or something.
PS - there are additional weirdness going on, like when I change the volume using the keys on the keyboard, the transparent little box that's supposed to show up on the screen with the corresponding number of bars --- that's now showing up as just a big block of white box... And on things like Finder Windows, the top portion of the window where I should be seeing a back-arrow button and stuff, they are not showing up...
The plastic part connecting the screen and the keyboard in my MBP has a crack! i don't know were it comes from, i have never droped it or mishandled my computer in any way. Will a repair be covered by the warranty?
I have had this quad g5 (dualcore 2.5ghz X 2) laying around for about a year that I purchased for $100 without a hard drive, super drive or a power cord. I was told that it was non working in the manner that ONE of the dual core cpu's had gone bad. I will be receiving my power cord this week to make sure that it still powers on but what the problem is.
My question is: If only one of the cpu's are bad, what is the part number I will be looking at? I am not wanting to spend a fortune on this to fix it, but If I do get it working I would like to drop 8-16gb ram in it, and setup a raid with 2 raptors.
My powerbook G4 aluminum was dropped about 18 inches. The display is now hosed. Thus far I have found *nothing* wrong with the laptop except for the internal display only shows gray horizontal lines with black snow/static intermixed (still in horizontal lines).
What I'm thinking is that the display is probably actually fine and there is some little logic board in the display casing that is bad.
Here is what I've proven:
1. external monitor still works fine (means vid card is fine?)
2. swapped internal displays with another powerbook and was fully functional (means it's something in my display casing or my display itself)
3. backlight works fine (on my munged display)
4. i can see movement in the grayness when i move the mouse pointer around almost like the pointer was as wide as the screen and 90% translucent (i.e. there is a horizontal shaded bar i can move up and down with the trackpad)
I've already thought about upgrading to the 1440x960 display and being done with it. But then I started thinking it is probably a $40-50 part if I could just narrow it down.... And that would be the smart thing, rather than spending $300+
I've got a powermac G5 dual 2ghz and 3 gigs of RAM that has a dead logic board. I don't really want to pay the $900 to have it replaced, so I'm thinking about just parting out the rest of the machine.
My Mac Pro arrived today and of the six or so times I've restarted this has happened three times:
I get the normal grey Apple logo screen then as it switches to the login screen the screen goes black. The monitor doesn't go into sleep mode, it thinks its getting a signal. If I hit the power button and put the Mac to sleep then wake it up the login screen appears.
I have come to the understanding that iDVD is not available on ilife 11. Is there anyway I can download it from somewhere and what alternatives are available?
I have a small video (about a minute or less) with the problem I have with my MacBook Pro 13" screen start up, I would like to submited to the forum, I have call Apple Support and trying to splain the problem, but it is hard to splain, since they have never seen that problem, I have suggested to them if I could send them the small video for them to see, what was the problem.
I recently purchased "Now That's What I Call Music, Vol. 42". Half of the songs only play for about half time and then switch to the next song in ITunes. I think I might have only downloaded part of the songs that don't play through entirety. When I parchased and downloaded I didn't have a reliable internet connection.
I do not want to get rid of all the Trash, just part of it. How do you do that? When I attempt it, it appears that ALL the trash will be emptied. Does this mean I have to move what I want to save to another location and then MT the trash, and then move the files BACK into Trash??
