Mac Pro :: Nvidia 285 GTX For MAC PRO 1.1? Will It Work?
Oct 25, 2010Will the video card Nvidia 285 GTX work on the MAC PRO 1.1?
Will the video card Nvidia 285 GTX work on the MAC PRO 1.1?
My old G5 dual 1,8 Ghz with FX5200 was not able to run HD video, so I bought nVidia 7800 GS AGP video card (PC card flashed for Mac) via eBay and now everything "work perfectly" - sometimes. ( Ha ha).
The problem is: On booting, when the circle stop to rotate, display freeze (LG Flatron L192WS) and I must restart pushing power button. I repeat booting for 7-8 times and if I have luck 9th will start up my Mac.
In SAFE MODE there is no problem with booting.
I do a lot of 3D work which is why I plan on purchasing said card, but wanted to ask: How does it fair for playing games? Not that I care, but I am just curious since nobody I find tests it for anything but 3D Software.

View 24 Replies View RelatedThis is my first post here, hopefully i can begin posting a bit more and learn more about my mac pro. I just got a hold of an Apple Graphics Card Upgrade. The part# is MB560Z/A. It's an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, but it's the 2006 version with EFI32 firmware (or do i call it BIOS or ROM?) and won't work with the 2008 Mac Pro... and of course my dilemma is i want to use it in my 2008 Mac Pro. So is it possible for me to flash it (which i'm pretty sure it is) and more importantly is it easy to do and could someone tell me how (or point me in the direction of simple instructions) of how to go about doing it? Also, I understand there's always some risk doing these type of things, but would the chance of me screwing up the card be considered minimal? Is it easy to restore to the factory default if i want to place it back in a 2006 mac (i have no plans for that, but it'd be nice to know i have that option).
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo, I bought myself new Macbook Pro exactly 21 days ago, and was disappointed to find out that they refreshed it today.
However, I am heading to Apple Store Friday afternoon to find out what I can do to get that refreshed one. (I waited 7 month, until the last day of the presentation)So, to people with 320m graphics, are there any big difference? Does the battery lasts longer?
I am going to college this year to study Graphic Design and i am looking to purchase a MBP 15". I have read a couple of other threads which cover similar questions however i am not truly satisfied with the answers i have read.
My MBP will have to run the following programs on a regular basis: Photoshop, Bridge, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash. It will also have to run basic tasks such as word processing, internet surfing and email. Finally i would also like to install parallels and XP on the machine just in case an work or applications need to be run on windows. Obviously all of these applications will not be running simultaneously however there is a strong chance 2 or 3 maybe running at the same time. My Imac deals with this without problems, will the MBP be the same?
Since I've updated my macbook and hackintosh to 10.6.5 I've notice that sometimes when using expose, for example I select iTunes and the other windows get blurry, and they get back to normal if I drag them around. I use expose in an hot corner

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (early 2008) Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro
The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT features 512MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory, uses the PCI Express 2.0 interface, and includes two dual-link DVI ports.
Just noticed that Engadget are reporting that Nvidia are set to launch the GTX 285 in June for Macs.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs u can see I have a 17" mbp and had it for a few months but after the nvidia announcement, Im seriously thinking about selling the mbp and using the which will cover for a 2.8ghz 8 core mp.
One of my fears is that the gpu will die over the years on the mbp and when apple care runs out or even if the mbp is covered by ac knowing that one day I would need to get it serviced..
I know I had the mp before and know what to expect and while the 17" mbp is a desktop replacement it is portable. Damn nvidia!
Sorry this is more of a venting thread than anything else.
Also curious anyone else on the same boat as I am with selling their mbp fora mac pro?
Looking around, I stumbled across an article that might interest those who plan to purchase a Nehalem Mac Pro.Quote:NVISION ? If you want to combine a pair of GeForce graphics cards with a new Core i7 processor from Intel later this year, you're in luck. Just after the grand finale for its Nvision conference, Nvidia gathered reporters to inform them of a somewhat surprising and apparently very recent decision: the firm plans to enable its SLI multi-GPU scheme to work with Intel's X58 chipset?without the need for an nForce 200 PCI Express bridge chip on the motherboard

A couple of months ago we heard about the Nvidia GTX 285 coming to the mac pro which i personally loved the idea of (I have a 1TB drive for mac and a 1TB drive for windows vista 64 for some general gaming). But it seems word on this illustrious card has fallen silent. Does anyone know what's happened to the card? Has it been released? Will it be released by BFG, EVGA, Apple etc?
I just replaced my boot drive, only to realize that I am not even able to boot to the OSX install disk with the GTX 285 installed... I had the same symptom when I first got the card, because you have to install the evga drivers prior to installing the card.
So... the question... is there anyway to do a fresh OSX install with the GTX 285 installed, ther than putting a card Apple supports?
On my Mac Pro (early-2009, ATi 4870), the Flash movie window flickers and sometimes goes black.
Should I spring and get a nVidia GTX285?
I've seen many people post that they want to see an ATI GPU. I was wondering if there was a particular reason for this. I don't know much about Nvidia's chips, do they not offer any with comparable performance and efficency?
View 22 Replies View RelatedAs it's a .exe file, only able to be executed using Windows through BootCamp or Parallels, would you be able to run it and overclock gpu/cpu through profile options and have them take effect in Mac OSX or would they only take effect when running Windows on the mac? Trying to find a way to clock my Mac OSX 10.5 2.2ghz 9400 chipset. Have read about it on forums, though i've not read if it will work when just running OSX as I don't regularly use windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedJust recieved my Mac pro last week and was waiting on whats going to be updated in the new Mac pros and after yesterday I just decided I wanted a Evga NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 but now that I want one it's hard to find one. Apple has 1 to 2 months before it's shipped and I checked ebay just not having much luck finding one. There's 1 Company I found that said they have 1 in stock just not sure if it's a ploy to make me order and try to sell me something else. I thought I would post in here maybe someone here knows where I can still pick one of these up.
I have a 2008 iMac with the above Graphic card installed from new by Apple along with 4Gb Ram.Â
All was fine. Now it chimes on boot up but remains at a black screen, I have read that these Graphic cards fail.Â
They are listed on E Bay about £200 from Hong Kong, Is there a Current compatible card that can be fitted, that is cheaper?Â

I have 10.6.8 running on a 2.66 GHz 4 core machine made in 2006. What is the most current Nvidia card that I can use?

i used to use only the 9600m gt for gaming as 9400m was handling everything, has better battery life and run cooler.
but i notice when i'm playing 1080p videos the 9600m gt perform better.
ok, 1080p youtube 9400m no problem at all.
1080p played on vlc 9400m laggy sometimes. but 9600m gt perform well.
1080p played on plex 9400m no problem at all.
that's why i think the new auto switching graphic cards on the new macbook pro is cool.
sometimes i'm on 9600m gt and decide to take the mac to the living area and forget that i was on the dedicated card while using on battery.
downloaded from Nvidia.com which give you error when you try to install it. So here I compiled a short guide in how to update your drivers. 1. Driver Nvidia 259.47 ( found better performance with this one) for Windows Vista/7 64 BIT ONLy!!! Same driver but for windows Vista/ 7 32 BIt Download here2. After you have downloaded drivers you will noticed that they are packed with 7Zip archive (self extracting), unpack it (just remember the location).

It is incredible slow - freezes constantly unless on very low graphics in games like World of Warcraft so i'm assuming i need to upload graphics. So i went to the Nvidia website, and tried to update driver by following steps correctly, selecting the correct options, etc and it said it couldn't update for my system..
How do i update my software so i can play without freezing?
There seem to be a few reports of problems running 750gb F1 Spinpoints with Nvidia chipsets. Does this apply to us with the 8800 or is it a Windows thing?
Anyone out there happily running a MacPro (08) with an 8800 and F1 spinpoints?
Is there consesus on wether its better to use the outdated BootCamp drivers (im using Vista 32bit) or the latest from Nvidia.com / others?
In case, is there any specific procedure for installing BootCamp drivers or i just donwload and launch the Nvidia ones?
I have a friend who's dell died that has a Quadro FX 4500 in it and he is willing to offer it to me for free. I figure it is better then my 7300 I have now and might hold me over until Apple releases the 8800 for last gen Mac Pros.
The only snag in this is I have to find the Mac Pro firmware so I can put it on this card and hopefully use it.
I bought a NVIDIA 8800GTS, since I saw it was possible to flash the card (thread in these forums). So I got the same card and was all excited! Unfortuantely I do not own a PC but I hoped I could flash the card within my MacPro (early 2008). Too bad that the flash utility nvflash.exe has to be run in a DOS environment. After fighting for a while I want to post my findings and maybe somebody know the solution.
Standard Dos BootCD will work on the mac but the USB keyboard won't be recognized :/ After trying the Hiren's Boot cd - I could use the keyboard, but there was no way the Loader could mount a RAM disk - I guess the MacPro handles ram differently than the standard PC. All I wanted to do is to access the NTFS filesystem so I could save my original NVidia ROM. No success I tried the HP USB Flash utility which creates a bootable USB flash drive with DOS on it but the MacPro doesn't recognise the drive as a bootable disk :/ Tried the same with an iPod but no success neither. So all I want is to boot into Dos with my MacPro - have a "writeable" drive so I can save my rom with the nvflash.exe and flash the card with the new and EFI64 rom version (which can be also found within another thread). Any1 an idea ? I think I am at the end of my knowledge... A .dmg that can be used to restore a Bootable DOS FAT32 partition that can be modified via OS X would be the bomb.
I just watched Tekzilla this week and saw how they posted hacks/fixes for people having their computer connected to HDTV. I know how to fix this in Windows but not sure how I can fix this in Apple. Hope someone has a similar fix. I currently have a Sharp 26in 1080i.
