Mac Pro :: Flash NVIDIA Card - Boot DOS

Apr 20, 2008

I bought a NVIDIA 8800GTS, since I saw it was possible to flash the card (thread in these forums). So I got the same card and was all excited! Unfortuantely I do not own a PC but I hoped I could flash the card within my MacPro (early 2008). Too bad that the flash utility nvflash.exe has to be run in a DOS environment. After fighting for a while I want to post my findings and maybe somebody know the solution.

Standard Dos BootCD will work on the mac but the USB keyboard won't be recognized :/ After trying the Hiren's Boot cd - I could use the keyboard, but there was no way the Loader could mount a RAM disk - I guess the MacPro handles ram differently than the standard PC. All I wanted to do is to access the NTFS filesystem so I could save my original NVidia ROM. No success I tried the HP USB Flash utility which creates a bootable USB flash drive with DOS on it but the MacPro doesn't recognise the drive as a bootable disk :/ Tried the same with an iPod but no success neither. So all I want is to boot into Dos with my MacPro - have a "writeable" drive so I can save my rom with the nvflash.exe and flash the card with the new and EFI64 rom version (which can be also found within another thread). Any1 an idea ? I think I am at the end of my knowledge... A .dmg that can be used to restore a Bootable DOS FAT32 partition that can be modified via OS X would be the bomb.

Mac Pro :: Looking For A Specific PC NVidia Card To Flash

May 5, 2009

I was able to try the new NVidia 3D-Shutter-Glasses on a PC, and I liked it.

It is something I dreamed off in my C64-days long time ago ;-)

I think about getting a MacPro and installing a flashed NVidia-Card with the connector for the shutter-remote. I hope to have the card running under OSX as a normal card and, when booting into Vista ( for games only), I then can enjoy the 3D-effect.

Now: is there a new generation Nvidia-card with the 3D-connector that will be flashable for OSX? That would be great news for me. I know the new Quattro-card has this connector also for OSX (?), but this thing is way off limits in terms of pricing.

Mac Pro :: Flash Nvidia 8800 GT (made For 06) To Work In 08?

Feb 11, 2010

This is my first post here, hopefully i can begin posting a bit more and learn more about my mac pro. I just got a hold of an Apple Graphics Card Upgrade. The part# is MB560Z/A. It's an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, but it's the 2006 version with EFI32 firmware (or do i call it BIOS or ROM?) and won't work with the 2008 Mac Pro... and of course my dilemma is i want to use it in my 2008 Mac Pro. So is it possible for me to flash it (which i'm pretty sure it is) and more importantly is it easy to do and could someone tell me how (or point me in the direction of simple instructions) of how to go about doing it? Also, I understand there's always some risk doing these type of things, but would the chance of me screwing up the card be considered minimal? Is it easy to restore to the factory default if i want to place it back in a 2006 mac (i have no plans for that, but it'd be nice to know i have that option).

Intel Mac :: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS Graphics Card Bad?

Apr 13, 2012

My 24" iMac has been exibiting strange behavior lately...  It appears to be if a graphical nature where the screen will randomly flicker or go blank in a variety of colors (black or white or yellow or red or blue).  Sometimes a preceeding indicator that this is going to occur is that the system becomes on responsive or extremely delayed, text and other graphics appear garbled/corrupted/scrambled.

I've used Mac Hardware Test, Disk Utility, TechTool Pro 6, anti virus software - even took it to a local authorized Mac repair shop (not Apple Store) and the results are the same - Everything LOOKS fine with no problems reported.  I've reinstalled the OS and even gone as far as completely wiping the drive and starting from scratch, just incase it is/was some kind of odd software conflict.  Yet, the problem persists and the Console always captures something like this just before another epic fail:

4/13/12 5:55:50.000 PM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x8 = Fifo: Watchdog Timeout Error

4/13/12 5:55:51.000 PM kernel: IOVendorGLContext::ReportGPURestart

MacBook Pro :: Nvidia GeForce 8600M Graphics Card Causing Memory Leak

Jul 21, 2009

I have a year old MacBook Pro with an Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT card.

I recently bought Unity but it turns out the Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT graphics card isn't fully supported because of a memory leak which is a problem with the drivers.
Unity Support have told me to update my drivers. I understood Mac drivers were always built in to the OS and no drivers were available from Nvidea but I see they now have one Mac driver for another card.

What is the actual state of affairs with this graphics card does anyone know? There have been a lot of reports of faulty ones and now this.

This is a just about year old top of the range MacBook Pro and it doesn't support graphics??

Windows On Mac :: Updating Nvidia Drivers On Boot Camp?

Apr 13, 2010

So I want to update my graphics card driver to see if that will help but for one I cant find which drivers to download and the ones I have downloaded don't work just saying that they cant find compatible hardware for the drivers.

I don't know if its anything to do with boot camp or its just me not knowing how to update drivers properly but can someone point me in the right direction?

I'm running Windows XP SP3 32bit, on my iMac. The graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 9400, no M or GT as far as i can tell. Boot Camp version is 2.0 or 2.1 cant remember.

I tried the nvidia website but it doesn't have that model listed so i don't know which one to download, and the ones i did download, as i say just said they couldn't find compatible hardware.

Software :: NVIDIA MacBook - Verbose Boot After Imaging?

Mar 12, 2009

Having received a fresh batch of NVidia MacBooks I've remade our default image and attempted to image the MacBooks. However once the imaging is completed they all boot in verbose mode. Other than this they operate perfectly. Our deployment script blesses the disk once the imaging is complete and I've tried blessing both the volume and the folder but it still boots in verbose mode. I've also tried disabling verbose boot in the NVRAM (it's not enabled anyway).

The only way that I've found to fix this is to manually select "Macintosh HD" in the Startup Disk Pref pane. So I guess the question is, what else is the pref pane doing all of a sudden?

Windows On Mac :: Finding Nvidia Drivers 179.48 For Boot Camp Xp32?

Feb 19, 2009

I'm in dire need of knowledgable assistance here! I've just purchased a beautiful unibody MBP and loving it. Last night I created an 80gb windows xp32 with sp2 partition using boot camp assistant and everything went perfect. Load up xp and installed the apple "install disc" and all drivers were installed.

My intention is to play games on this partition, so I obviously wanted to install the best video drivers. I haven't updated to sp3 yet, but I downloaded the latest nvidia notebook drivers off their website and specifically d/l'd version 179.48 beta, it's an autoexe file. anyways, upon installation it exits, saying it cannot find the hardware to support the drivers.. ! i then tried installing a few laptopvideo2go drives using their method with the modded inf file and was successful installing these files, but xp soon after reverts to the crappy old vga drivers with an error msg.

Mac Pro :: Unable To Boot / Kernel Panic At Boot And Graphics Card Failure

Mar 9, 2008

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.

So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.

What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.

Mac Pro :: How To Flash PC Video Card For Mac

Nov 7, 2010

I've been reading, researching, etc like crazy on flashing PC video cards for mac. Cindori's Post: The Golden Guide to Flashing Graphic Cards [URL]. This guide is GOLDEN!! And Rew's post: Step by Step: How to flash a PC 4870 1 Gig Video Card for your 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) [URL]. Have been really helpful. Only my ATI Radeon HD 2600XT stock card in my 2008 mac pro, totally fried/died out. So I have zero video card (I'm using a PC laptop now). And the tutorials on how to flash a PC cards requires plugging in both the old card (using it while dumping the ROM) and new card. I was looking into buy a Sapphire 4870 1G and I don't want to pay the $300 and plus already used flashed cards on eBay. The 4870 are cheaper compared to the 5870 at $400 plus. I was wondering if anybody got to flashing the 4870 using just the one video card on a mac pro 2008 (3.1)? I need a good video card to do 3D modeling in Maya and Mudbox. But don't want to pay double the price, or lesser choice for 'apple' approved hardware?

However, I love the flash drive reader on my Macbook Air.  Could I put a copy of my iTunes library on the flash drive, and just pop it in when I want to access iTunes?
