Mac Pro :: Mac Pro Woodcrest Clovertown Upgrade Options?

Apr 5, 2009

I have a Mac Pro I inherited from a coworker, it came with two dual-core Woodcrest 3.0 GHz Xeons, 4 GB memory, etc. I recently upgraded it to a pair of 2.0 GHz clovertowns (more cores are more important to my work than clock speed), and I'm having, shall we say, mixed success. Booting into OS X, the system crawls along at several orders of magnitude slower than it should. The grey pinwheel progress bar at the gray apple logo screen on bootup pokes along at one tick every 7 seconds or so. When the login screen finally appears, the cursor blinks every 12-14 seconds, keystrokes take many many seconds to register. I never got past the log in screen. The same issues are experienced when booting from the OS X 10.5 install DVD.

Mac Pro :: Woodcrest Vs. Clovertown - Graphic Work In Photoshop?

Jul 2, 2009

I have a MacPro 1,1 2.0GHz and would like to upgrade the CPUs. Is there a significant difference in every day performance between a 3.0GHz Woodcrest (quad core) vs. a 2.33GHz Clovertown (octo core)? I use my computer mostly for graphic work in Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator and also like to play the occasional game.

Mac Pro :: Upgrade MP Woodcrest 2x2.66 Processors To Quads?

Mar 6, 2009

after patiently awaiting to upgrade to the 2009 MP, I'm not sure I'm going to take the plunge. I had read here of people dropping in the quad core processors into the dual core 2.66 Mac Pros. I'd be willing to explore this instead but am having a hard time finding this on Google. Does anyone have any firsthand experience or links? After being a Mac person from the beginning, I think that it is interesting the current frustration in the value of the hardware that was last evident during the time of the clones... We all remember how Apple did during that time

Mac Pro :: Woodcrest MacPro- Benefit From SL?

Jun 5, 2009

With Snow Leopard on the horizon, and there already being some 64bit operating systems out there which are a hassle to get working with the "woodcrest" MacPro machines, eg, W7 x64 is a no go, and I have read that it is a PITA to get Vista x64 going(and a waste of time anyway). It has gotten me thinking, will Snow Leopard work in true 64bit form in the machine that was advertised as a 64bit Pro workstation?I am eager too see how much of a difference Grand Central and Open CL make!

PowerPC :: G4 Upgrade Options - Decent Vide Cards?

Feb 20, 2007

I know the G4s are 733mhz and below, I'm not sure if they're Quicksilvers or DAs, I could probably find out, but I already bugged an IT guy once, so I'm not sure I want to ask again. Now, assuming these are at a decent price (from what I've heard, they usually are), is it worth it to buy one and upgrade? I've been reading over lowendmac.com, and I see both of the 733mhz models will accept dual 1.8 cards/boards. This probably won't be my primary machine, but my Photoshop machine until I get a Mac Pro.How much are the 733mhz machines worth, they probably have 1gb or so of ram, and a decent(for the time) vide card. The school doesn't really skimp, in our photo department, we have G5s w/dual 2ghz, 4gb RAM, and 23" ACDs.

Mac Pro :: Mac Pro Woodcrest 3.0GHz, Original HDD Cache, Boot ROM, Bus, Host

Oct 26, 2010

For several years now, daily, I've ran through a number of different HDD's under relatively stable (although hard-working) conditions (Seagate, WD, and now Hitachi). None of them ever crashed until recently (WDD Caviar Black 640MB). But there have regularly been periods of time (before that) in the past when I would hear what sounded like sharp-twang on Shutdown - like a noise from a toy ray-gun or something. It's happened a few other times in the past, although an HDD has never failed shortly thereafter.

Mac Pro :: Upgrade Video Card Vs Upgrade Entire System?

Jan 28, 2010

I am kicking around between upgrading video card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 dual core, 8gb ram) from 7300 Gt to ati 4870 vs. upgrading to a newer system altogether...

Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.

I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.

MacBook Pro :: 13" Processor Upgrade Vs RAM Upgrade?

Nov 17, 2010

Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.

Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.

I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

My main programs are Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. I use these on both Macs.

I do a small amount of AfterEffects, UltraFractal, Bryce 6, and Cinema4D, but nothing *big*. I typically use these on the Mac Pro only.

I spend most of my time on the Mac Pro.

Mac :: Disk Options On New 2.8 Nto Mac Pro?

Jun 24, 2009

I recently purchased a 2.8 octo Mac Pro that came with a stock 200 Gig HD. I purchased a WD 640 Caviar Blue HD for a boot drive and 3x 1 Tb Samsung Spinpoints for data and backup. When I got the Mac I simply took out the stock drive, put in the WD and did a clean install off the install DVD?s. The machine performs very well when it?s running my apps, like Pro Tools, but it?s sometimes a bit fragile when performing mundane tasks like burning dvd?s while surfing safari f.eks. It tends to freeze up quite a bit. Then I noticed also that the Samsung drives I put in it are a bit unresponsive. i.e. when i move files between folders on the extra Samsungs there is a few seconds of "lag" while before I can open the folders again.

OS X :: Selecting Other Options In A Dialog Box?

Sep 13, 2010

Of all the things I've learned to do on a Mac over the years, and with all the help I've provided here at MR, I still don't know how to do the following:

On a rolled out dialog box like the one shown below, how does one go about selecting something other than the highlighted button (in this case Save...) using the keyboard?

I think Escape usually works to select Cancel, but how would I select Don't Save using the keyboard? Why can't I simply Tab over to it and hit the space bar or Enter?

While we're at it, I'm familiar with taking a screenshot of an entire window (CMD+SHIFT+4 followed by Space) but that doesn't seem to work to take a screenshot of a window + the dialog box, other than the sloppy way I just did?
