I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro and will be moving it to a room that does not have a wired internet connection but does have wireless in the house. Other than getting a USB wireless adapter is there any way else so I can take advantage of the wireless signal to get online using my Mac Pro?

When I connect a display via a Dual-Link adapter (tested original Apple and Dr.Bott) to the external Mini-Displayport of my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 I don't get full 8 bit per channel color depth (or at least it's seriously messed up with heavy banding), neither in native resolution (2560x1600) nor in non-native (1920x1200).Running the same display via the same cable over a passive Single-Link adapter works perfectly well (all 256 shades of grey present).
I tried two different cables (both a Dual-Link and a Single-Link cable, both of which work with the Single-Link adapter). So either both Adapters are bugged the very same, or the 9600M GT does something wrong when a Dual-Link adapter is connected. It could also be a driver issue, but at least the internal display doesn't show any banding when running in Clone mode.Same happens on OS X with both the 9600M and 9400M. So either both adapters ain't working properly or there's something wrong with the combination of NVidia 9x00M and Dual-Link DVI.
And I tested three more single-link displays (1x 1920x1200, 2x 1680x1050) and only one works (the 1920x1200 Viewsonic VP2330), the other two show the same problem with both Mini-Displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapters.Then I tested connecting a current ATI based IMac 21.5" to one of the not working displays (a Samsung) and there worked with both adapters.So it seems that the 9400/9600M in the Macbook Pro output a signal of lower strength (compared to the ATI based Imac), which leads to signal degradation once coupled with a Dual-Link adapter. The reason why the VP2330 works probably is because it can work with weaker signals. That doesn't help me at all with my 30" display though and only 1 working display out of 4 is rather disappointing.
When i connect my hdtv to my mbp via vga (using mini displayport vga adapter) I am only achieving a 1080i signal. I did some research and I found that there are two 1080 resolution options in leopard, one being 1080i and the other being 1080p, you simply have to turn the display options on in the menu bar and then select the one you wish to use.
With this new found knowledge i found the two resolution options and tried them however, I found that one of the 1080 resolution options outputted 1080i whilst the other outputted 1050, despite clearly saying 1080. This has me baffled! Is this due to me using a vga cable and has anyone had similar issues? Additionally, is it possible to achieve a 1080p signal from a mbp? Mine is the late 08 model if that makes a difference.
Which would be better, a USB wireless adapter or installing an actual wireless card? The computer is a PowerMac G5 1.6GHz and I want to add wireless capability to it. Which card is the best and which USB adapter is the best. We'll be using a Linksys router.

'07 model MBP core duo running OS4.11 + original Airport (hey it still works). The MBP will only stay connected now if my base station within 10' or so. It might connect 30' away, but looses the signal after loading a few pages online. It seems like its getting worse -- maybe not, but seems like it is. I can connect just find with my other MBP, iPod (streaming audio across the house, etc) and PS3.
I am using a wireless network on my 17" PB and the signal strength is low and am downloading music, how can I increase the signal strength (lets say i cannot move).

Since updating to 10.6.2 my wireless signal will stop working after about five minutes, the only fix is to turn off my wireless connection then back on again and its fine. I'm on a Mac Pro, the Mrs has a Macbook with 10.5 and she gets no hassle at all so I'm pretty sure its not the router.

I know that having a repeater or an external antenna can solve the problem but i cant afford those things right now. I know that on pc you can go to task manager and conentrate your bandwidth percentage to internet explorer, but is there anything like that i can do to my mac? also any other free way would be good too.

Might be AntennaGate #2, I haven't quite figured out if I'm blocking signal or what. Generally I move it a bit and signal comes back right away.
I live where there are city-wide WiFi connections. I actually live a block or two from one of the routers. The only problem is that my powerbook 12" has the hardest time picking up a signal, in fact I often have a hard time picking up wireless signals unless I'm right near them.
I realize this is one fault of the 12-banger, but it's almost as if mine sucks more than usual. Anyways, I know there is a way to extend the wireless capabilities. I've seen hacks where an antenna is actually soldered on, which is a route I would rather not take. If I had a windows machine there are several USB adapters to extend the range. Are there any of these that will work with a Mac?
So, recently I just moved into another house and, unfortunately, where I'm at, I'm not able to get internet service through my old provider (Verizon) and they were kind of my only option at this point. However, during this time, my laptop has been able to connect to a free, available, public wireless network near where I'm at. When I'm in a certain area of my house, it works great, but when I'm on the other side, in my office, I get next to nothing. Given that I need to do a lot of work out of my office, is there any sort of thing I can buy that will extend the signal to that part of house?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just got a Mac Mini no too long ago and while moving to my new apartment, my wireless router had a tragic accident and is no longer with me. So I thought "hey, I will just use my Mac Mini to broadcast a wifi signal so my other devices can connect to it." So I spent the morning setting up the internet sharing in the Mac Mini system preferences. Got my Dell Studio 1555 to connect with no issues. But my roommates acer notebook won't pick up the wifi signal at all. Checked it on both of our smart phones (both are android models), my nook, and even my ipod touch. It is only showing up on the dell for some reason. I was wondering if anyone else has encoutered this issue before Mac mini is currently set up with 128bit wep with a 13 character password.

I'm having trouble with my macbook. It's dropping the wireless signal right and left...sorta. Airport isn't disconnecting, it just stops recognizing the signal until I cycle the airport card off and on.

I can't seem to get any signal unless I'm sitting right next to my router, like I am now. I know it's not my router because another laptop, my iPod Touch and my DS all can connect to the router as usual. on my new second hand ibook the wireless is really poor, 50% of the time it cant even find it, im using a bt homehub which on the pc it can run at about 6mb/s but the mac runs below 1 although last night it strangly went up to 5 for a miniute or two, i have tried making sure the airport card is in properly and the connector i assume is the ariel?? seems to not plug in very well? a little loose ? do i need a new aiport card?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running ATT DSL Extreme 3.0 and have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I currently only get wireless in approx. half of my house, and the half in which I don't get it, will be needing it. So I am going to need to buy a range extender or wireless access point? I am a college student so I don't have a large budget, but I am looking for advice. Should I stick with Linksys and just buy one of their range extenders, or should I buy an Airport Extreme and hope the N signal is stronger? I am going to be sharing files soon when I get my Mac Mini HTPC setup going on in the living room to this from my other iMac's and MBP.
In summary, I am just not sure if it would be worth the extra $ for the Airport extreme or if I should just stick with the linksys.
Are there any that a store like best Buy sells that are compatible with a Mac / Macbook? I need to pick up a signal in another room, and the only way would be to run a long USB cord attached to a wireless adapter...but it seems like none of the bigger brands sell Mac-compatible versions. If anyone knows of a compatible adapter, please post about it!

I purchased the Samsung SCX-4500 Laser Printer, and I want to makie it a wireless printer. I am wondering where to purchase a USB Wireless Printer Adapter that would plug into the printer, and how would I set it up. Note: It wont be connected to a wireless router, I want to connect a USB Wireless Adapter to the printer instead. I can hook up to the eMac from my Beige G4 (os 9.2.2)using Chooser/Appletalk/and inputing the IP address of the eMac (from Network preferences); which lets me connect.
When I'm hooked up to Internet- wireless with Afterthemac n300 usb internet adapter on eMac, my problem is that I need to have an IP Address of the wireless computer (eMac 750mhz) so that I can connect to it with a G4 Beige Mac os 9.2.2) which I can't find. I get the following in the Network preferences: Configure IPv4: Using DHCP (drop menu); IP Address 192.168.2.11; Subnet Mask 225.225.225.0; Router 192.168.2.1 The optional boxes for DNS Servers and Search Domains are empty.
These numbers were suggested by the Internet provider, which I entered in anticipation and before I received the n300. The router which I rent from the service provider is a SIEMENS GIGASET567. So- is there a way that I can change the numbers from above so that I can connect both computers. I tried the IP 192.168.2.11 but eventually a message comes back telling me it can't find the server. Another reason might be if I would want to hook up to the eMac from another office to get information on that particular computer.
I currently have a Linksys WUSB54GP that I had hooked up to my PC for wireless access. Well it doesn't agree well with my new airport extreme. Anyone using something they would like to recommend that DOES work with an airport extreme??
