I have a 2009 - Mac Pro 8 Core with a 4870 Video Card. I know this card uses both the six pin power plugs. I want to add a ATi 2600 Xt card to be able to drive a third monitor and Wacom Cintiq tablet.
Will there be any problems doing this? Does the 2600 just plug into the PCI slot and fire right up? Do I have to adjust the card from 16 to 8?
I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:

All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until Sunday afternoon. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A reset of the SMC has been done and a diagnostic as been run (no problems found). Is anybody else experiencing this? If it helps anyone, I've also posted my temps below:

Also, I did some reading and it seems that this issue has happened to others after they appllied the 2600 XT update from Apple. The update put their firmware at version .252. This is the version that is already installed on my card.
What I don't understand is that why for two days the fan never ran at full speed. It just suddenly started happening Sunday afternoon while I was burning some data to a DVD - the fan hasn't slowed down since.
I have been having an issue with my display lately and think it might be because of my graphics card. The display shows a "tail" of whatever is on the screen. So if you are looking at an edge of a window, that window edge will trail off to the side, creating a sort of ghost image. So I tried disconnecting the monitor and I plugged it into the other slot. That seemed to fix the the "Tail" temporarily. But, it made certain portions of the screen blurry. There are literally blurry patches. So I tried switching the connection again, and it just moved the blurriness.
Also, this is my second ATI Radeon HD 2600! Could it be a graphics card issue and if so, should I switch to the Nvidia option?
I have been having this reoccurring issue on just one of my screens. My right screen/main screen on my Mac Pro 2.8GHz seems to go dark on me, only in a few programs though. Safari and Lightroom mainly as those are the ones I use mostly on that screen.
It seems to happen once in a while, when it has been running a good bit which is why I thought it was the video card, too hot or something.
In the last 2 weeks before my MP shipped, I've asked 3 Apple Geniuses at Apple stores and Apple Tech support about running dual DVI 23" Cinema Displays with 4870's. They ALL said I would need a second card. When I attempted the install, there were only 2 power cord clips on the back face of the main board. Both being used by the onboard Radeon 4870. What to do next? Another call to Apple support offered me a nice Indian girl who I could not really understand. Finally, I called a local non-Apple shop that I frequent for hardware and service issues. The very nice service tech told me to take the 2nd card back, since that original 4870 will drive 2 monitors perfectly, in my case, with a simple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor for the 2nd 23" display.
how would you install any 2nd graphics card, if a 4870 takes up both power clips?
I just picked up a second 24" ACD with the mini display port. I already have one, so the mini display port on my 4870 is in use. So I think I need an adaptor to go from the MDP on the second display to the DVI on the 4870.
However, this adaptor has a male MDP and a female DVI. The ACD has a male MDP, so I think I need an adaptor which is a female MDP and a female DVI.
I find it a little strange that it is so difficult to put two identical monitors on the Mac Pro. I did search the forums, but kept getting hits for the above adaptor and I am not sure how it would work.

I have bought a flashed 4870 for my 1st Gen Mac Pro and it works fine. But yesterday i wanted to plug a second 23" ACD in and woundered that its not working.
Can i flash my card with another ROM so that i can use two monitors? In a german forum there are some people who has the same card and for them it works with 2 monitors.
I have an issue with my 4870 (Mac edition) that has been occurring since day one (when I purchased it last month), but it's not something that happens every single time.
I've run into a problem that the 4870 has trouble recognizing one or both monitors plugged in. If I shut off power to my displayport-connected main monitor, it'll throw the menu bar, all the desktop items, and application windows onto the second monitor (DVI-connected). This also happens when I shut off the second monitor (desktop items and app windows get shuffled to the main monitor).
The other issue is that on startup, it may just be slow to recognize one of them, and the above screen-swapping issues happen anyway, followed seconds later by the screen once again being recognized.
I recently purchased a second 22" Dell 2209WA to go with my Mac Pro. They are both running from the ATI Radeon 4870 on my Mac Pro (2009 Quad) but the Expose performance seems to be really quite poor. Displaying all the windows is very juddery and not smooth at all. Is that what I should be expecting now? I wouldn't have on a �2000 Machine. Going into Spaces is fine, it's just Expose thats poor.

Can any of our GPU gurus hazard a guess at whether these will benefit those of us with flashed cards, or will they more likely brick them, or do we just not know until we test them?

So I have an Early 2009 Octocore 2.93 and I have a flashed ATI Radeo HD 4870 video card that is supposed to work on a PC but its flashed so it works on a mac. I know its not officially supported but the issue im running into is that the operating system cannot recognize the full resolution the HP LP3065 30 inch display is capable of. The display can run up to 2560x1600 on any other system but not with my ten thousand dollar machine. The windows side can display at the full resolution but Snow Leopard can only run 1280x800 and it makes the OS look like a pile of dog **** on sunday.
Anyone else run into this issue?

I just got a new 2.8 MP which obviously came with a 2600 card. I bought a 3870 and have in installed where the 2600 was.
Can I put the 2600 in the other 16x slot and use the crossfire cable between the two? What would be the pros/cons of this?
I'm not a gamer, but edit a lot of HD video in FCP, use PS, AE, C4D, etc. Also want to be able to run XP in bootcamp for some Windows software.
I just bought a refurb MP (sig) with the standard ATI card, but it's ... the loudest part of my system (even with 4 HD's).
With nothing going on, the fan spins up, slows down, spins up, slows down, like it's pulsating. Is that normal?
Also, the 2nd Dell 2005FPW that I bought won't work via DVI with it, and I can't tell if it's the card or the monitor.
The monitor works fine with the VGA and the adapter, so I'm leaning more towards the DVI output on the monitor. But with the annoying fan, I'm not so sure.
I replaced the 2600 XT that came in my mac pro with a 3870 HD. But I feel like the 2600 XT is being wasted just sitting on its own gathering dust. I was thinking about putting it in a Hackintosh, or just a new PC with Windows 7. Does a mac video card work in a PC?

Currently I have 2 Geforce 7300 GTs, bridged with an ASUS Flex bridge, and overclocked. I get about 50-100 fps constantly in Counter Strike Source, and about 120-170 fps in UT 2004, both at resolutions of 1280x1024, 4X FSAA and maximum detail.
I'm becoming very tired of my small 19" LCD as im a graphic designer and am in the process of buying a 24" LCD which woud give me 19200x1200 resolution. This of course, would kill my geforce setup and drop my frame rates significantly.
Now, I've been thinking of upgrading but am not sure which video cards I should get...1900 XT or 2 X 2600 XT and overclocking them. Is the dual 2600 XT even an option? Can they be crossfired? Overclocked?
I've been playing half life 2 and am ready to move to half life 2 episode 2, but im fairly certain my video cards wont handle the game at the same settings i currently have. Of course, there are other games i would want to play but my limitations dont allow it, more importantly, at 1920x1200 resolutions after the monitor upgrade.

I own a macpro early 2008 and during the flashing procedure of an ATI 4870 i have made something wrong and suddenly my ati 2600xt is no more recognized as an ati 2600xt but as an ATI 3xxx or something like that. I am an utter newbie here, and I just got an late 2007 iMac the one with 2.4ghz Dual Core and the ati2600 320gb HD Model for a great price.
I have a 2008 Model Mac Pro with the original HD 5770 Gfx Card as well as a new HD 2600 XT to connect a total of 4 screens without issues.But the HD 2600 XT actually has 3 outputs (2 Mini-DVI and a DVI), but when plugging 3 screens, 1 will always go blank.Is there a way to connect the 3 screens at the same time to that card?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI wish to get a more powerful graphics card for my 2008 24" iMac. My card is an ATI Radeon 2600 XT. It is supposedly (according to photos and YouTube videos) a small square chip board, screwed to the underside of the logic board, with a large cooling assembly (fan box with long copper tubing going to the square chip board) which also is screwed onto the GC board, the cooling system being removeable. The chip board is small and surely must carry a 'type' name, as like PCS, etc, but I havent found a name. Could it be CDB? At any rate, I need a modern card that can run the newest OpenGL systems. Does anyone make a card that will fit and replace the 2600 XT? How does one search for a retro fit upgrade card? Â

View 4 Replies View RelatedHook up a $3K machine to a $1.5K display and have to hard power down your $3K machine to get the picture back.When I boot everything is fine. If I change input to TV or power off the display, when I power back up or switch back to hdmi input screen displays error, can't read signal check output device. I have read on this forum about a issue similar with ATV but not with MacPro. In my google searches I read some issues with Vista, but no resolution... thought to be a ATI driver problem. Does anyone know of a tweak to fix the ATI 2600 XT to remember the tv signal after you change inputs or power off the display?

Since I'm considering driving more than 2 monitors, I'm considering adding it to the existing HD 2600 XT, instead of replacing the previous graphics card.
Any caveats I need to be aware of? Can I simply install the 8800GT on the 2nd-bottom slot above the HD 2600 XT? (It'll take up 2 slots, right?) Will this perform alright under Mac OS X and Windows Vista? Any power issues I should be aware of... or is it better to avoid the hassle and remove the HD 2600 XT, replacing it with the 8800GT?
