Has anyone put in 2 of the 3870's and also left in their 2600 to use it as a physics accelator? I am thinking about getting 2x3870's to replace my 8800GT, but not sure it is worth the money yet.
View 24 RepliesSo because apple has done almost nothing about the 8800 GT being available for 'older' mac pro owners and almost nothing to live up to its claims that mac pros would be easily expandable, ive been thinking about alternatives a graphic card upgrade.
Currently I have 2 Geforce 7300 GTs, bridged with an ASUS Flex bridge, and overclocked. I get about 50-100 fps constantly in Counter Strike Source, and about 120-170 fps in UT 2004, both at resolutions of 1280x1024, 4X FSAA and maximum detail.
I'm becoming very tired of my small 19" LCD as im a graphic designer and am in the process of buying a 24" LCD which woud give me 19200x1200 resolution. This of course, would kill my geforce setup and drop my frame rates significantly.
Now, I've been thinking of upgrading but am not sure which video cards I should get...1900 XT or 2 X 2600 XT and overclocking them. Is the dual 2600 XT even an option? Can they be crossfired? Overclocked?
I've been playing half life 2 and am ready to move to half life 2 episode 2, but im fairly certain my video cards wont handle the game at the same settings i currently have. Of course, there are other games i would want to play but my limitations dont allow it, more importantly, at 1920x1200 resolutions after the monitor upgrade.
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with a GT120. I'll be receiving my GTX 285 tomorrow morning and was curious if I could just move the GT 120 up two slots and put the GTX285 where the GT120 current is? I only have one monitor which I'll run off the 285. When I game via windows will that setup allow me to use the GT120 as a dedicated physics card? Also, I took a look on mroogle but was mainly finding reference to the 8800 and ATI4870, which is no use to me.

How can I insert a summation notation symbol [∑] WITH the index information below and above it? Inserting the symbol itself is easy with the OS X Characters Palette, but putting the i=1 on the bottom and the N on the top is what I don't know how do in a good looking way. And since I'm probably going to run into more things like this in the future, is there a resource where I can look this stuff up?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 2006 Mac Pro and I'm wondering if CrossFireX is possible on this system. Specifically with two 5770s.
My understanding is that CrossFireX requires two PCIe 2.0 16x slots. However, the 2006 Mac Pro only has PCIe 1.x slots, and with two cards, it's only possible to have its slots running at 8x. Does this prevent CrossFireX from working at all, or is it simply a case of it working fine but running at reduced performance?
I have on order a Mac pro 8 core with all the goodies, stock video card is the 8800GTX. I would like to know if any of you have ever ran SLI or Crossfire?
I have heard several opinions on SLI and or Crossfire and know they are not supported in OSX, but has anyone successfully ran either in Bootcamp Windows? I would assume Crossfire is easier than SLI as SLI is chipset based but I heard a hacked driver exists.
Obviously only under windows, i could find on google any macpros with CrossFire. Anyone here managed it.

Also do you have to download a program to start crossfire or does it just work?

It's no big secret that today Apple announced that the ATI 4870 will be available sometime in the near future for the new Mac Pros and some of the other recent models.
So the question is for those of us who are running a single 3870, is it worth dropping it for the 4870 or better to go 2x3870 in crossfire. This is more of a question geared towards Windows usage and not OSX since OSX doesn't support crossfire.
Just a couple of weeks ago I purchased the Mac/PC edition of the 3870 from OWC and added the Accelero passive cooler to it and it's working out well.
I was thinking about buying an additional 3870 to crossfire sometime in the relatively near future solely for the purpose of Windows gaming since you can get PC versions of the 3870 for so cheap.
I'm guessing the Mac edition of the 4870 is going to be pricey so would the dual 3870 option make more sense?
It seems that with this technology and with Snow Leopard coming out that this should be a no brainer. However, the recent refresh has shown little signs of picking this up. The Mac Pro has had multi gpu options for a while so nothing new there, but the iMac didn't get anything in the way of multi GPUs. So with the Mac Pro and the MBPro having multi GPUs, it may just be that their saving it for their pro line.
Since Snow Leopard is supposed to bring about OpenCL which will use the GPU, why have we heard nothing about SLI or Crossfire? These would greatly benefit the system. It seems to me that Apple could benefit greatly from using this technology, not just for the OS, but for a better hardware position.
I have two Apple 5870s on hand, a modular power supply on order as well as a crossfire bridge connector. I am taking it upon myself to rearrange the mac pro with two 5870s and test whether or not crossfire will work under Windows 7.

I just got a new 2.8 MP which obviously came with a 2600 card. I bought a 3870 and have in installed where the 2600 was.
Can I put the 2600 in the other 16x slot and use the crossfire cable between the two? What would be the pros/cons of this?
I'm not a gamer, but edit a lot of HD video in FCP, use PS, AE, C4D, etc. Also want to be able to run XP in bootcamp for some Windows software.
I want to use dual 3870 Crossfire in Boot Camp Windows and not have OS X choke.Note I am NOT asking to have Crossfire work in OS X, I just want OS X to use one of the cards while both work when booted into Windows.
Does anybody know, on a Jan08 Mac Pro Xeon, if I install dual 3870 cards with the Crossfire jumper connected, will OS X ignore the jumper and work properly on a single card?

The limitation for getting a 4870x2 working in OSX seems to be the lack of crossfire support. Crossfire is available in Linux and BSD, though I'm not sure to what extent and how well. So serious question time: What will it take to get crossfire working in OSX with the goal of running a 4870x2??? Seems to me it should be possible, I just don't know how.

With nothing going on, the fan spins up, slows down, spins up, slows down, like it's pulsating. Is that normal?
Also, the 2nd Dell 2005FPW that I bought won't work via DVI with it, and I can't tell if it's the card or the monitor.
The monitor works fine with the VGA and the adapter, so I'm leaning more towards the DVI output on the monitor. But with the annoying fan, I'm not so sure.
I replaced the 2600 XT that came in my mac pro with a 3870 HD. But I feel like the 2600 XT is being wasted just sitting on its own gathering dust. I was thinking about putting it in a Hackintosh, or just a new PC with Windows 7. Does a mac video card work in a PC?

Will there be any problems doing this? Does the 2600 just plug into the PCI slot and fire right up? Do I have to adjust the card from 16 to 8?

I own a macpro early 2008 and during the flashing procedure of an ATI 4870 i have made something wrong and suddenly my ati 2600xt is no more recognized as an ati 2600xt but as an ATI 3xxx or something like that. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:

All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until Sunday afternoon. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A reset of the SMC has been done and a diagnostic as been run (no problems found). Is anybody else experiencing this? If it helps anyone, I've also posted my temps below:

Also, I did some reading and it seems that this issue has happened to others after they appllied the 2600 XT update from Apple. The update put their firmware at version .252. This is the version that is already installed on my card.
What I don't understand is that why for two days the fan never ran at full speed. It just suddenly started happening Sunday afternoon while I was burning some data to a DVD - the fan hasn't slowed down since.
I have searched for this but I mostly see people asking about the new GT 120/130 vs 4850....
But I was curious how thw new Nvidea 9400 stacks up to the older "real" video card 2600.
I am an utter newbie here, and I just got an late 2007 iMac the one with 2.4ghz Dual Core and the ati2600 320gb HD Model for a great price.
I have a 2008 Model Mac Pro with the original HD 5770 Gfx Card as well as a new HD 2600 XT to connect a total of 4 screens without issues.But the HD 2600 XT actually has 3 outputs (2 Mini-DVI and a DVI), but when plugging 3 screens, 1 will always go blank.Is there a way to connect the 3 screens at the same time to that card?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have been having an issue with my display lately and think it might be because of my graphics card. The display shows a "tail" of whatever is on the screen. So if you are looking at an edge of a window, that window edge will trail off to the side, creating a sort of ghost image. So I tried disconnecting the monitor and I plugged it into the other slot. That seemed to fix the the "Tail" temporarily. But, it made certain portions of the screen blurry. There are literally blurry patches. So I tried switching the connection again, and it just moved the blurriness.
Also, this is my second ATI Radeon HD 2600! Could it be a graphics card issue and if so, should I switch to the Nvidia option?
